When we were rehearsing it, I said I would like to imitate Tallulah Bankhead in this scene. I’ve seen Tallulah many times at big parties and she picks up a cigarette and five lights come in, men who light her cigarette. And we imitated that and it came off very well.

“We had been a team for four nights, and we were sleeping in the same bed so we could save nine bucks. I dream out loud and he says to me, ‘You’re dreaming out loud again! Let me know when you’re finished so I can go back to sleep (laughs).’ Then I say ‘Paul understand what I am going to tell you right now. In about six months. we’re going to have such money, we’re not going to be able to count it. He said, ‘From your lips, my friend.’ Just days after we teamed up, I make this prediction because I believed it.”

Burt, who would have turned 98 today,  was a circus performer before his Hollywood career. Here in 1950, he balances atop a pole held by Nick Cravat, and talks casually with the crowd and press before sliding down.

POSSIBLY THE HOTTEST CLASSIC MOVIE KISS …EVER?

Connie (Jean) and Joe (Joel) are forced (uh oh!) to occupy the same cramped apartment in Washington DC. It’s cool though, she’s not interested in him(!) she’s just ‘doing her bit’ to be patriotic during the housing shortage. She fully retains her virtue and all that while regularly enjoying the sight of Joel McCrea in a state of undress – everybody wins! There’s also some old guy living with them, but he’s kind of a dick and reads her diary so we’ll just gloss over that. 

And now, finally, Connie and Joe are alone together – they’ve been out dining and dancing and he is walking her home. Naturally, it’s at this point that she tries to distract herself from Joe’s allure (and the ever-thickening haze of punch-drunk love) by babbling about her bewigged fiancé, Mr Pendergast. A total turn off, right? NOPE. Not to Joel ‘Handsy’ McCrea it isn’t. Seriously, just watch the film…
