Development & Final Product
For the final design I decided that it would be far more effective and true to the quote if the whole cover was the glass ceiling, and you can only tell it's a glass ceiling as there's bird poo all over the cover.

Tutorial Feedback
Following some feedback from my tutorial, while my feedback was mostly good I was thinking about how I could make my glass ceiling look more like a glass ceiling rather than a window. I thought that I needed to have a new photoshoot of some new glass ceilings to see maybe if I could get a better effect with a different photo.
I actually concluded after this experimental shoot that it was probably better to focus the cover so that it was less about the fact that it's a glass ceiling, and more on the fact that you can only tell it's a glass ceiling because there's bird poo on it. By that logic, the cover would be a lot more effective if it was just a clear blue sky with the bird poo on it, so that you only realise it's a ceiling because of the poo, which is the whole point of the quote anyway.

Book Cover Layout Experiments
I decided to continue the blue sky theme to the back of the book but make the spine the same cream colour I used for the type on the front cover to keep it consistent. I also debated on whether to include anything on the spine because it was looking a little bit empty but decided to leave it how it is.

Photo Editing Experiments
Trail 1:
I decided against this version as I thought the photo was a bit too busy and there were too many angels and edges to be able to put type coherently on it.
Trial 2:
This was the trial where I experimented with how bright to make the sky, and also with the size and placement of the bird poo. I decided to go with more of a 'splattered' bird poo in the end as I thought it was more effective than just a small round bit. I also really wanted to play around with the type to give it perspective to go with the way the view is looking up at the ceiling at the skylight.
Trial 3:
This is the image and the edited version of the photo I ultimately went with to start experimenting with book cover layouts. I added shading and editing to the bird poo to make it look like it is embossed on the flat page.

Penguin Book Cover
“It's difficult to see the glass ceiling because it's made of glass. Virtually invisible. What we need is for more birds to fly above it and shit all over it, so we can see it properly.” This is a quote from 'How To Be a Woman' that particularly stood out to me, particularly because it encompasses Moran's writing style perfectly.
I thought that it would be very interesting to experiment with photographing a real 'glass ceiling' for the front cover.
Understand what the glass ceiling is, who it affects, why it exists and how you can help break down such barriers in your workplace.
I decided I would like to experiment with photography and take photographs of an actual 'glass ceiling', as I thought metaphorically it would work and be effective, but I also wanted to experiment with geometric photography.
Here is the mood board I created for the shoot:

The shoot was successful, and provided me with a good few images I could work with and be able to produce something effective through editing.

Research into potential books
Your chance to interpret a brief from an Art Director as part of your course or to develop your portfolio. Please note that Penguin will not
My first thought was that I really wanted to research into the children's books to see whether any of them gave me any ideas. I really enjoyed doing children's branding with my RSA brief so I thought this would be something that would appeal to me and look coherent in my portfolio.
James and the Giant Peach
I love the book James and the Giant Peach and thought it would be really lovely to illustrate a cover for this, but I don't think I would be able to move past my love for Quentin Blake's illustrations or think of an idea that would be better or more successful.
"Bigger and bigger grew the peach, bigger and bigger and BIGGER." James Henry Trotter is about to go on the adventure of a lifetime. Jame
The Outsiders
The Outsiders was an interesting choice for me also, I'd never heard of the book but through research I thought it had a lot of interesting themes, such as class divide, honour and integrity and the cycle of violence. I thought that the cover would be very successful if it was brought to the modern day through a poignant piece of photography.
From Penguin's The Originals collection, The Outsiders is an outstanding story of teenage rebellion, written when the author was only 17.
A summary of Themes in S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders.
I also had a look at the non-fiction books, because I thought that a non fiction book could have a quite successful cover through experimenting with something conceptual and thematic.
How To Be a Woman
How To Be a Woman is a memoir/'rant' of Caitlin Moran's experience as a woman, and her opinion that every woman (and man) should call themselves a feminist... because why on earth would you not. Her writing is very flippant, funny and blunt humour about a topic people usually are uncomfortable talking about. In an interview done by NPR, Moran says that she uses humour in her writing because "it's kind of hard to argue with someone who's making you laugh".

The response I would create to this could be really simple but thought-provoking, and I thought would be really effective through the medium of photography.

Critical Evaluation & Personal Reflection
I really enjoyed this project, I had a lot of fun researching into children's branding and creating my own branding guidelines and styles and incorporating them into various products. Something I feel like I did well with this project is deciding the target audience early, so that all of my work was well considered and targeted specifically for the target audience and that everything was effective. I made sure to do as much research into the target audiences, primary and secondary, as I could which really made my work better. I also thought that doing as much research as possible and having a broader idea early on really made it easy to refine the idea until it was more specific but really effective. To make it better, I would have liked to have developed the products a little bit more. I would have loved to create a video advert showcasing the app in animated version to make it come to life and to show the user experience. I would have also liked to have created the products in real life with real printed packaging if I'd had more time, and had a real photoshoot with models and showing the product in action. I would have also loved to have created the box and the app in real life and brought them to schools and youth centres for children to try and play with.

Forager's Box/kit
For the kit, I decided to actually photograph the box rather than try and make a mock up of each individual piece as having a photograph would look infinitely better.
I took 113 photos in various placements and settings to show off the contents of the bag. After using lightroom, these are the ones I chose as the best after editing them:
I decided to go with the last one as I actually thought it looked better without the box and having everything out on display was nicer as you can see everything included nicely.
I then edited everything to include the little forager's branding. This is the end result.

Third draft of app design
This was the last draft I was really happy with. I put the illustrations of the fruit through the app to bring the branding of Little Foragers into the app's pages a bit more. I added different shapes to the headers to make the pages stand over the headers as apposed to the other way around, and I also added a shape underneath the 'you marked this as picked!' to make it look like a pop up notification.

Second draft of app design
This was the next draft, but I still wasn't a fan. I cleaned up the recipes screen, but it still looked quite cluttered. I also didn't like the bubble shapes I used for the headers of the pages.

Little Forager's App
This is the first design of the Little Forager's app.
This is the base version I did with just getting down what each page was going to be about, but I needed to do some app design research in order to make it look a lot better and a lot more user friendly.

For more into app design I decided to look at EPM, as I remember Dot doing a really interesting and informative lecture on app design last year, and following her advice in other projects really helped. This helped me a lot to clean up what I was producing and make it look usable.
