Narkolio 

Narkolio “Ezekiel” (heb. “God will strengthen”) is a shapeshifting centaur and one of the potential love interests for the player. 

Game Description:

“After escaping a death penalty in Red Deepthorn, Ezekiel changed his name to Narkolio and began a new life in Aeredale. He doesn’t talk about the life he led before he came to the village, but his eyes say more than words ever could. Generally distrusts humans due to his experiences. He lives at Kimi’s Farm and helps her with the field work. He takes work very seriously.”

Birthday:  Spring 19

Appearance:

Narkolio is a centaur; his upper body being human, and his lower body being horse. His human skin is tan, he has long, silver hair, and two differently colored eyes, with one being light blue and the other greyish blue. A long, white horn grows from the top of his forehead, holding his bangs out of his face. His ears are slightly spiky, his stomach toned, and his arms muscular. The horse part of his body is colored like a dapple grey and appears to be chubbier than his human parts (though he insists it’s muscle). He has quite a few scars on his backside. His tail is curly and kept at a medium length. 

Personality:

Narkolio is a hardworking fellow who spends the majority of his life outside, either working in the fields, running errands in the village or taking walks in the forest. He enjoys moving around and making good use of his muscles, and he offers going on adventures with you pretty early on. One of his favorite things to do is parkour, and he can often be seen racing and jumping objects with Cherche or Kimi. He has a slight accent due to his upbringing, is sometimes heard speaking a language to monsters the MC doesn’t understand, and also forgets the right words to use from time to time. Though he enjoys talking to you and is generally very friendly, he doesn’t trust humans very easily, so if you choose to play a human MC, his trust level starts off lower than average, but he will not treat you differently besides a few occasional silent moments and bitter gazes during your first interactions. He has the tendency to overwork himself and regularly forgets to eat, which worries Kimi a lot, but he later reveals to you that he actually loves food and can’t explain why he keeps forgetting to eat either. He also reveals that his two stomachs are both pretty much bottomless pits, hinting that befriending him is much easier when you give him homemade food every day. By talking to him regularly, he will talk about his body occasionally, for example that he has the village blacksmith make him shoes regularly. He also apparently likes being brushed, but there are some parts he just can not reach, so he has Kimi do it for him. Another thing he will mention is that he enjoys spicy foods, but his horse stomach doesn’t handle them well and he is scared of the consequences (because horses can even die from severe stomach issues). Narkolio talks about work a lot, even in his free time, but the more he warms up to you, the more he will also talk about his opinions on village life, about Cherche and Kimi (and later Zane as well) specifically, and the other things he likes, music, singing and monsters for example. He is very talkative and likes being around you. 

His AI is designed to react with discomfort to the scars on his backside. When the player stands or walks behind him for too long, or attempts to take a picture of his behind, he will point out that he feels uncomfortable and ask you to stop. If you continue to bother him, he will react with aggression, and it will affect your friendship and trust level negatively.  

When MC is walking around the village late at night (after 11 PM), they can encounter Narkolio sleepwalking, and have actual conversations with him while he sleeps. He talks about several topics, such as varying seed prices, foods he is craving and things he’s recently remembered. It’s a good chance to ask him questions he would normally not answer, or to find out useful ways to strengthen your friendship. For example, if you buy the seeds he has been talking about, he will feel like you read his mind and you are soulmates. If you bring him the dish he’s been craving, it will increase your friendship level twice as much. 

Story:

The first time you encounter Narkolio is within the first 5 ingame days, when your mother sends you on an errand to pick up vegetables and flowers from Kimi’s Farm. Kimi lets you know that someone named Narkolio packed up the ordered goods for you, and asks you to go to the back of the farm and meet the centaur who’s working in the fields. If you chose to play as a human, he will shoot you a bitter gaze before he introduces himself to you, but the conversation will continue normally. Depending which answer option you choose, you can decide whether or not you already know each other.  “Hang on. I’ll be right with ye.” “Hello, Narkolio!” “(Name)! Nice ta see ye. ‘tis been a while. So ye mum sent ye ta pick up some stuff, huh?” “Kimi told me to meet you.” “…” (human MC) “Aye, thought so. Yer (Name), right? ‘tis Narkolio. Pleasure.” When you choose the second option, he will tell you that he’s been working for Kimi since a few days and really enjoys it so far, and that he is looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the townsfolk. After that, the conversation will continue normally. 

From now on, Narkolio can be interacted with daily. He can be found on Kimi’s Farm, all over the Village, in the Forest, and once Cherche moves to town, in their house as well. Most of the time, he’s running errands or working in the fields. Along with Kimi, he sells seeds, vegetables and groceries to you.

Once you build Monster Barns and tame monsters, he will teach you how to ride them. You can also ask him to tell you what they think of you when you bring a monster for him to meet. He will occasionally write you letters, asking whether or not he is allowed to meet your monsters. Letting him meet them will help raise his trust level, and he will comment on your monster’s most noticeable features, or point out if they are feeling unwell. When you reach friendship level 6 with him, you can ask him to race and practice parkour with your monsters to raise their speed and vitality. 

When your next destination is the Bursnia Chasm, he will open up about his past to you. He will tell you that he grew up in Appleraine, Red Deepthorn, was originally named Ezekiel, and had fled to Aeredale. He was illegally held captive since his birth, and raised to become a riding unit for soldiers. His parents were killed due to old age, his siblings sold as slaves like planned, and when Bellenau discovered that Ezekiel had a spinal Problem that the breeder had kept secret and wasn’t suitable to be ridden into battle, he should be killed. Due to the help of Zane, who he didn’t know back then, he managed to escape, and made his way to Aeredale. Kimi found him, starved and weak, and took him in. In order to express his gratitude, he changed his name from the name he was given from the ones who enslaved him to a name Kimi liked. He points out that the scars all over his backside are from the harsh training, and punishments to keep him under control. The MC sympathizes with him, and Narkolio asks them to end this war for everyone’s sake. 

At the end of Arc 2, Narkolio can be seen in the credits, interacting with his siblings.

Ahem, now I fangirled - I really love this character? Like wow, it was so many traits I like. I find really funny that he forgets to eat because sometimes I do that too. Rarely, but it has happened. XD

Cherche

Cherche (fr. “search”) is your rival who becomes a potential love interest for the player after the first arc.

Game Description: “A quiet and distant man/woman who lives at the outskirts of Aeredale. Became a part of your village after he/she has lost his/her position as the tactician in the war of Bellenau. A skilled mage who surprisingly knows a lot about medicine. Often frowned upon for his/her rough attitude, but he/she actually struggles to express himself/herself properly.”

Gender: Depends on MC’s sexuality, can be chosen if bisexual, pansexual or other 

Birthday:  Fall 13

Appearance:

Female: Cherche is a tall woman with light, greyish-white skin, long, wavy black hair that reflects in a reddish color, high cheek bones and yellow eyes. She has full lips that hide a set of slightly spiky teeth. She’s often seen wearing a fancy looking, long black dress with golden ornaments. Her upper back is mostly exposed, showing thin, wave shaped, black streaks on her skin.   

Male: Cherche is a tall man with light, greyish-white skin, messy, wavy black hair that reflects in a blueish color, high cheek bones and grey eyes. He has a set of slightly spiky teeth and a black goatee. He’s often seen wearing “dramatic” clothing, with boastful fur collars and golden ornaments. His upper stomach is often exposed, showing thin, wave shaped, black streaks on his skin. 

Personality:

You meet Cherche as a distant, passive character, who avoids conversating and opening up to anyone like the plague. They often express their distrust in the villagers and the MC, and claim to dislike their kindness towards strangers. The more time you spend with them, though, the more you come to realize that Cherche isn’t necessarily trying to be rude, but rather has not had much experience with people. They have been in a higher position than any normal townsfolk until now, so it’s hard for them to view themselves as equal to them. The more time you spend with them, the more they warm up to you, eventually telling you about their interests and even about what their life was like. As soon as they start interacting with the townsfolk more, the villagers will also comment on how Cherche isn’t as bad as they thought at first. It turns out Cherche actually has a very caring, protective side to them, which just never got a chance to develop properly, and now makes them appear slightly creepy and possessive whenever they attempt to show it. With a bit of help from the MC and their newly won friend, the centaur Narkolio, they will eventually learn to show their affection in a healthier manner. Though they will still struggle socializing and seem rude or creepy occasionally when they don’t know how to act, they have the potential to become a kind, smart and strong friend and valuable, warm partner.

Story:

The first time you encounter Cherche, they come to your village as the tactician of the enemy Bellenau, with the intention to take it over. MC faces them in battle, but has no chance of actually beating them. As the defeated MC desperately wonders why this war is happening at all, Cherche mockingly promises them to answer all their questions once they defeat them in a fair fight. They claim to proceed to meet the Emperor/Empress, in order to steal the throne. Once the MC returns home, they will hear that Cherche has been fought off by the soldiers of the city nearby. Later, Cherche reveals they were merely meant to investigate, in order to set up a tactic for the actual invasion, but simply couldn’t resist to give you a scare.

The next time you encounter them is in the cave of Kalbus, where they are positioned to control the magic that confuses and controls the monsters in your area. Your character will have gathered enough experience to actually stand a chance against Cherche this time. When you defeat them in a fight, you will be allowed to ask three questions. After their defeat, they retreat, but promise they will not make it as easy next time.

For the last time, you face Cherche in Maydes Hollow towards the end of the first arc, where they are positioned to stop you from getting your hands on the Amulet of Illusions. After you defeat them another time, MC asks them three more questions. Once the last question is answered, Cherche’s leader Bellenau arrives, and proceeds to lecture them. He tells them they’ve become useless and weak, for they’ve not only lost to a regular villager twice, but also spilled a lot of secrets, and now order them to commit suicide. The player gets to make the choice between letting Cherche die, or taking them back to the village.  Gifts:

Depending on your race, your character will have general strengths and weaknesses (ex.: Humans are Allrounders, Orcs have a higher physical strength but lower speed, Dwarves are good at forging and swordfighting, but bad at mastering magic and taking magic damage), and occasionally other characters will make both positive and negative remarks based on your appearance. (ex.: “You dwarves really are everywhere these days, huh?”, “Your ears and face look so cute!”, “If you’re a vampire and out in the sun right now, that can only mean… That you guys die in the sun is just a rumor, no?” 

Your skills and personality traits will dictate your other strengths and weaknesses, naturally. For example, if you’re smart and an animal lover, you learn new skills faster, and taming and interacting with animals and monsters is easier. If you’re kind and charming, it helps friendship and love levels with other characters rise faster.

Of course, you must also give your character weaknesses. For example, they can be smart, but not very strong. Or they can be an animal lover, but struggle with talking to people and making friends. There are many traits and skills to choose from. 

Depending on which skills and traits you choose, your enemy will always receive a trait to balance them out. (ex.: Smart MC = Strong enemy (physically stronger than the MC). Animal lover MC = Monster expert enemy (strong against monster attacks). Kind MC = Cold enemy (friendship levels rise slower). Charming MC = Clueless enemy (love levels rise slower). 

Ah yes, the enemy. Because I’m a sucker for this trope, I’d like them to be a bachelor/bachelorette. But more to that later. 

Because I love dating in RPGs, I would like the MC to be able to date other characters. But because I also hate that you can only date characters of the other gender and around your own age normally, I would like to have some dialogue options implemented that helps you choose your bachelors/bachelorettes according to your own tastes. For example:

In the beginning of the game, you and a friend of yours go through photographs. As you unpack the photos, you get to choose how to start your character’s sentences.

“This was when my boyfriend and I…” (heterosexual female, homosexual male) “This was when my girlfriend and I…” (heterosexual male, homosexual female) “This was when my partner and I…” (bisexual, pansexual, other)

As you continue to talk, you get these options (of course adjusted to the choices you made before):

“He/She/They was/were older than me.” (characters that are up to 10 years older than you + characters your age) “He/She/They was/were was younger than me.” (characters that are up to 10 years younger than you (18+ only) + characters your age) “He/She/They was/were my age.” (only characters your age)

And as for your own pronouns, you get to choose:

“Look, I’m also just a woman.” (female pronouns, she/her) “Look, I’m also just a man.” (male pronouns, he/him) “Look, I’m also just a living being.” (nonbinary pronouns, other, they/them)

The options for marriagable characters will not change, regardless of race, sexuality or gender. You can marry the same character you married as a homosexual female in another save file as a heterosexual male. 

As for what I was talking about earlier, I would like the enemy to be dateable as well. Depending on the choices you make at the start, they will be either male, female, or you get to choose their gender. ( “Wait, wasn’t that this guy…” or “Wait, wasn’t that this girl…”)

You start off as a regular villager, level 5. You live in a small, rather poor town on the east side of the kingdom, and help your family out with their work.

Depending on which personality traits and skills you choose, your character will have different abilities.  

Smart (Magic +, Defense -)  Kind (Friendship +, Attack -)  Charming (Love +, Trust -)  Strong (Defense +, Magic -)  Animal Lover (Monsters +, Friendship -)  Protective (Trust +, Monsters -)  Bold (Attack +, Love -) 

The plot itself will not vary depending on your skills. 

The kingdom is currently split in half. A powerful warlock is taking over small parts of the kingdom, continuously, until the entire west side was under their control. They continue to take over cities and villages, one by one, and since yours is in danger as well, you have to learn how to defend yourself - just in case. Depending on your chosen race and your physical abilities, you will be given weapons to practice with. You will be able to choose three weapons that work for your race. 

The weapons are:  Magic Staff Magic Book Healing Magic  Short Sword Broad Sword Long Sword Dual Blades Lance Hammer Axe

After a few days of working with your family and getting accustomed to village life, you encounter your enemy for the first time while you’re out doing a chore. They tell you that they came to see the Emperor/Empress, and order you to go back and tell them they want to see them. You, knowing who they are, stand your ground and refuse, and it ends up being your first fight. 

You, being Level 5, and them, being Level 150… you stand no chance. Helplessly, you ask them why they want to take the kingdom. Your enemy mockingly tells you that there will be enough time for questions and chitchat once you defeat them in a fair fight. For them it’s an empty promise, but for you, it’s an encouragement to become stronger. Even though the soldier’s from the city nearby and the Emperor/Empress’s magic skills manage to drive the enemy away, you’re left determined to become stronger for the sake of your people - and for the sake of your answers.
