Title: “The mall is closing in ten minutes, we should leave.”
All photos taken by me.
Liminal spaces have always been a strange comfort to me. There’s something about their emptiness, the echoes of a place once buzzed with life, that makes me so nostalgic. So imagine my surprise when I decided to visit my local mall after a long while, only to find that the Macy’s there was closing down (one of only two left in my entire city, btw).
The original plan was to buy makeup, but wandering through the near-empty store brought back a different kind of nostalgia. You know, the kind of nostalgia that comes with childhood memories of shopping trips with family: browsing, laughing, impulse buys, and making an afternoon out of nothing.
Maybe that’s why I find comfort in these “liminal” spaces; they remind me of a time when everything felt a little more whole.
I didn’t find any makeup, but I did leave with a few pieces of clothing (90% off, no less).
Here’s to the birth of another liminal space, and to the memories that make them feel like home.

The empty commercial spaces in the middle of downtown
The tunnel that runs under my town for some reason
I think I had a dream here once
In 1882 Francis Dorn lost his wife and child during childbirth. He constructed this mausoleum to store and guard over their bodies. Inscribed at the base of the ~20 foot tall monument in stone; “disturb not the sleep of death.”
The pyramid sits separated from the rest of the headstones. It’s the only spot on the grounds that can support the weight of the stone without sinking into the earth. Dorn died in 2018 and was sealed away with his family.
It is the physical manifestation of grief.

“It's taboo to admit that you're lonely. You can make jokes about it, of course. You can tell people that you spend most of your time with Netflix or that you haven't left the house today and you might not even go outside tomorrow. But rarely do you ever tell people about the true depths of your loneliness, about how you feel more and more alienated from your friends each passing day and you're not sure how to fix it. It seems like everyone is just better at living than you are. A part of you knew this was going to happen. Growing up, you just had this feeling that you wouldn't transition well to adult life, that you'd fall right through the cracks. And look at you now, it's happening.”
Franz Kafka, the metamorphosis / Jane Austen
