Let’s recap some of the many ways women have ruled this season of Game of Thrones (no finale spoilers!).
Happy Social Media Day!
Writer Karol Collymore talks racism, self-care, and why she won’t be watching Orange Is the New Black anymore:
“One of Orange is the New Black’s goals is to provoke viewers to think about things that don’t get enough attention in our society. It focuses on some hard situations many people would rather look away from, like the prison-industrial complex, sexual assault, and, yes, racism. But as a person of color watching the show, it felt traumatic. I already know about and experience racism. Watching such visceral racist acts in every episode didn’t feel enlightening, it felt exhausting.”
The Hamilton documentary finally has a premiere date on PBS
The network also announced the rest of its fall slate.

Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama charm in Africa
The Supreme Court has overturned a Texas law requiring clinics that provide abortions to have surgical facilities and doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The law was predicted to close many clinics and further reduce availability of abortion in Texas; the court has ruled the law violated the Constitution.
With a 5-3 decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the court reversed a decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which had upheld the law. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Chief Justice John Roberts dissented, while Anthony Kennedy joined the liberal justices in the majority.
NPR’s Nina Totenberg, reporting from the Supreme Court, says this decision will have consequences around the country — several states have laws (either in effect or currently blocked) with similar requirements to that of Texas. If those laws are found to be essentially the same as Texas’ law, Nina says, they will be thrown out by the courts.

In the wake of #OscarsSoWhite, the Academy is getting more racially diverse and a bit less male-dominated. Today, the Academy announced the names of the 683 people invited to join the group that votes on the Oscars annually: 46% of the new invitees are female, so if they all accept the invitation, the percent of women in the Academy will increase from 25% to 27%. Forty-one percent of the class are people of color, bumping people of color from 8% to 11% of the Academy.
This winter, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said she was committed to doubling the number of woman and minority members who can vote for the Oscars. If the Academy is serious about diversifying, they have a lot of ground to make up: A 2012 investigation found that Oscar voters were nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male, with an average age of 62.

It could also force players to give up weapons or to adhere to “other reasonable directives designed to promote the safety of the player’s partner, children, or victims.”” MLB Announces New Domestic Violence Policy

Rest in peace, Julian Bond. A great champion for peace and justice.
Last month, 16-year-old Houston teenager Jada passed out at a party. She woke up without any memory of what happened, but when she returned home, she found that her underwear was on backwards. She believed she was raped.
6-year-old Jada is such an inspiration. Jada was bullied by users on social media after graphic photos of her #sexualassault spread across the Internet. Jada is now speaking out and fighting back with her #IAmJada pose. Stand with Jada and join us in saying NO MORE to #rapeculture and #cyberbullying. Read and watch her story here.
i was so extremely happy to see this commercial during the giants game tonight. no more excuses. the rape culture in this country needs to end.
Last week, Indianapolis Colts linebacker Josh McNary was charged with rape. The NFL recently revised its personal conduct policy—including a minimum six-game suspension for crimes that include sexual assault.
We hear and read the phrase “sexual assault” quite a bit. But how is it defined? Here are some resources to understand what it means and how to get help.

I want to honor the memory of the great civil rights activist Julian Bond, who died yesterday at the age of 75. As he often noted, Mr. Bond was from several generations of college graduates (his father, Horace Mann Bond, was the first Black president of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania) but spent the bulk of his life reaching out to help others gain equality in education and civil rights. I gratefully acknowledge the decades of fearless service and leadership of Julian Bond and extend my condolences to his wife Pamela and his family. This photo of Mr. Bond with members of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (he was a co-founder) was taken by the legendary photographer Richard Avedon on March 23, 1963 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ronda Rousey jabs Floyd Mayweather and his history of domestic violence
The fact that UFC champion Ronda Rousey was awarded best fighter over noted male champions like boxer Floyd Mayweather and MMA fighter Donald Cerrone would have been a significant feminist victory in and of itself. But Rousey took advantage of the moment when she called out Mayweather for his misogynistic history with domestic violence.

In McKinney, Texas, 15-year-old Dajerria Becton was tackled to the ground, kneed in the neck, and handcuffed by a police officer while she was wearing a bikini. In Cleveland, Tanisha Anderson, a schizophrenic and bipolar woman, was allegedly slammed to the ground in front of her family, before dying in police custody. In Chicago, 22-year-old Rekia Boyd was accidentally shot in the head by an officer who opened fire on a group gathered in an alley.
Black men are missing. So are black women.
