Early-on practice tests might be the most painful entities to ever exist. Have to guess on this concept that I once knew? No problem. Knowing that itâs just a crazy guessing game because my brain contains none of the things it needs to? Alright, letâs go. Realizing thereâs 160 questions that I literally have no clue on? Well, fuck...
alright. 3 weeks of class left, then 8 weeks of dedicated. time to get my shit together arnksgksdgdÂ
y did I spend $$ on cramfighter when I donât even like it and can make a better excel schedule on my own đđđ
just about 10 weeks away from step 1 and officially in *panic* mode.Â
this is my side blog for school stuff (my main is a supernatural blog because, yes, I am *THAT* kind of gay in the lordâs year 2021), so it will primarily be about the impending freak outs that come with step studying.Â

what to do when everythingâs a mess
Wash your hair. Donât worry about all those articles online about the best haircare products of 2019 and whatnot, get in, wash it like you usually do, get out. Leave it to air dry, itâs less work for you.
Brush your teeth. Even if you brushed them this morning and are probably going to brush it tonight, do it anyway. Especially if itâs exam time, all that tea or coffee youâre most likely downing (props to you if you only study with water) probably makes them feel kind of gross.
I know most of these lists tell you to run a bath, but letâs face it, for those of you who even have a bath in the first place, the thought of filling that tub and sitting there in complete silence for a couple hours seems like a trek. And ironically exhausting. So instead, just brush your hair, take a nap (set a nice soothing alarm) and once youâve gotten out of bed, wash your face or at least splash cold water on your face.
CLEAN clean clean clean CLEAN. Easier said than done, but at least start by clearing one messy component of your area; it could be your floor, your desk or your bed. You donât need to clean and re-organise your entire room marie condo-style for you to actually have a reason to take the time to clean in the first place. A little goes a long way, and you donât ALWAYS need to do the hard yards ya know.
I would say read a book, but sometimes your brain is melting or buzzing so it canât really focus on anything lengthy. So instead, find someone reciting a poem online, and just listen to it. I recommend Jeremy Irons and his voicing of tons of T.S Eliot poetry, or Allen Ginsberg reciting his own poetry (Howl is a classic).
If youâre one of those people who drowns their sorrows by listening to music, donât listen to music!! Donât reinforce your pain!! So to that I say, listen to a podcast. If the classic podcast genre of true crime is a little too stressful and youâve already cried twice today, listen to interviews with actors, screenwriters and directors. It can be really refreshing to listen to people you already enjoy the content of talk about their work. I recommend Awards Chatter and Happy Sad Confused.
Stop staring at screens! Just physically sit outside for a bit, you donât need to go for a jog or do a general workout, justâŚsit. People-watch, try and memorise the exact scene in front of you, from the mis-en-scene to all the colours and sounds and the way the sunlight feels on your eyelashes. Write it down if you want to, you could even denote a single notebook to your little outdoor descriptions. Or just write on a napkin. To each their own.
Have you eaten today? And I mean something hearty, something that isnât primarily made out of air and salt. Something that falls under the umbrella of snack does not count; meal is more like it. If not, eat. Preparing food might feel exhausting, but soâs going a relatively long amount of time without something nutritionally substantial.
If youâre feeling emotionally heavily, get out a notebook or even just a scrap of paper, a pen and cry until your eyes are as blurry as can be. With tears down your cheeks, scribble out how youâre feeling. Donât bother with how neat or messy it is, whether the sentences even stay on the lines, itâs not about being aesthetic. In fact, itâs about being as messy as possible. Let all of it out, and let is act as a physical manifestation of whatâs going on in your head. Donât fight it or deny it, relieve yourself by both constructing and understanding yourself.Â
Hello, lovelies! Iâve gotten a couple of asks about studying so I decided to condense them into one post for you guys! Iâm trying to hit a bunch of different topics so if you need an even more specific post you can send an ask! Without any further ado, have some tips! My studyblr is @spacey-scholarâ
Prep
First, you always need a good base for your day! Especially if youâre studying a lot.
Make a good full breakfast! Ex. Eggs and Toast, Smoothie and fruit, Pancakes and a cup of juice.Â
Howâs your hygiene? Do you need to shower, brush your teeth, wash your face, condition your hair? Do it! Youâll be distracted if you feel messy!
Get dressed like itâs a normal day. Staying in PJâs is okay! But being ready for the day seriously helps focus!
Likewise, your space should be clean. A clean space is a clean mind! Remove dishes, trash, scrap paper, and extra items. Wide down your desk, organize your pens and books. Your space should feel like your space!
Now make a list of what you need to get done! What needs to be done Now, what needs to be done Soon, and what needs to be done Later?Â
Order your list how you want your day to go, and donât put super-tough subjects back to back, or subjects that are similar exercises i.e. reading thirty pages of two different books back to back is no fun.
The Studying
Itâs important to buckle down with No Distractions! If you find yourself distracted put your phone away! If you need your phone, put it on Do Not Disturb until youâre done. I also do this at night for better sleep.Â
Pick the best technique for you, Pomodoro, reward-based, group studying, etc.
Play music but only if it will not distract you! If you sing along or daydream itâs the wrong music! Classical, Lo-fi, and White noise are all good! My Spotify Here has some good ones.
Use a nice journal (I donât mean expensive!) and pens/pencils you enjoy using. I like to have a specific journal and color dedicated to each subject.Â
Take notes on recorded lectures and classes, if youâre doing online classes right now try to screen record or record the audio! That way if you space out you can play it later and take notes, and you can absorb the lesson better instead of being distracted.
Donât worry about your notes, stationary, pictures, being beautiful and your grades being perfect. Life doesnât always look the way it does on Instagram. And the people who spend hours trying to get a good photo of their coffee are not studying!Â
Use flashcards! Quizlet is good if you need premade ones! If you can save up and buy them, Barrons AP Flash Cards are the best in my opinion. Very clean, not too long, very durable, and cover all subjects.
Feeling DistractedÂ
If you catch yourself drifting off and getting into your head, get up and take a quick walk, stretch, or energizer.Â
Itâs okay if this happens, donât guilt yourself! practice affirmation. The best and smartest still get distracted.Â
If you are drifting, why? Are you hungry? Tired? Thirsty? Bored? Get a snack and some water, take a break and rest, find a way to make your studying more enjoyable.Â
Remember that Motivation and Discipline are different things. Sometimes we just wonât be motivated, we wonât want to do it and it will be rather frustrating. But the cure to this is not shaming its discipline. Remind yourself âThis may be hard, and I may not want to do this, but I want to reach my goals and If this is what It takes I will make it happen.Â
Always do just one more page of youâre tired. One at a time and oh you did it! Maybe just one more? One more? Eh, one more just to finish the train of thought, Oh just- Iâm done? Nice!
If you really canât focus just move on and come back to this subject, you can always ask for help.
Supplementary Things
There are so many apps you can use to study, for free! My favorites are Tide, Quizlet, Focus Keeper, Forest, Flora, Egenda, SpanishDict, Photomath, and Kahn Academy.Â
You can also join a study group! You may know one, but if you donât, there are a lot of online ones! Iâm in a study Discord and have been for a while! it helps a lot and motivates me to finish my work!
You can make a studyblr, but donât do it just for the aesthetics! Itâs about studying, and sometimes that gets messy! Sometimes we fail a test, we spill our tea on our notes, we cry because we donât understand the formula. Thatâs the part you donât see!
Having cute stationery can really help, as well as nice organizers and decorations for your space! I donât have much money so I get a lot of stuff on Amazon or FB Marketplace.
Health
Remember that no matter what you are good enough. Itâs okay if you fail, itâs okay if you struggle.
Itâs also okay if your path doesnât go the way you expected! Maybe you go to a different school than expected! Or choose a trade instead! Maybe you take a gap year! Maybe your passion changes! Maybe it changes six times!
Your health is always more important than your school. If you are in pain, mentally or physically, if you are anxious, exhausted, burnt out, talk to your teachers about it! You matter more than a grade.
Your best is good enough! And your best doesnât look the same as someone elseâs best! Donât compare!
Now go get out there and study!
