Brain MRI after half of it was removed from a 3-year old boy
“The brain is remarkably plastic,” said Dorit Kliemann, a cognitive neuroscientist at the California Institute of Technology, and the first author of the study. “It can compensate for dramatic loss of brain structure, and in some cases the remaining networks can support almost typical cognition.”

A Pulsatile Abdominal Mass
A 66 year old man presented with 2 months of bloating and constipation. Evaluation revealed an ENORMOUS abdominal aortic aneurysm.
CT angiography revealed a large fusiform infrarenal aortic aneurysm measuring 11 cm by 10.5 cm by 14 cm (Panel A). The patient underwent surgery, during which the aneurysm was exposed (Panel B and video) and replaced with an aortobiiliac graft.Â

Asteroid hyalosis or human snow globe?
A 54-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus presented to the ophthalmology clinic for a routine dilated fundus examination. Slit-lamp examination of the left eye revealed multiple sparkling, white, globular, refractile, dotlike opacities in the vitreous cavity. The opacities moved with ocular movement and returned to their original position after movement stopped. The vitreous of the right eye appeared normal. The visual acuity was 20/20 in each eye, and the fundus in each eye was normal.Â
Asteroid hyalosis is a benign condition that is often unilateral, and is associated with older age. The asteroid bodies are composed of calcium, phosphorus, and various phospholipids. Given the benign nature of this condition and this patient’s normal visual acuity, no treatment was recommended.
