Kinktober 2021 – Day 30

As the Hokage’s advisor, Shikamaru works long shifts. Temari pushes him away when he notices something off with her, but Shikamaru knows how to get her to be a little more honest with her feelings.

Being older than him was never an issue. They both knew that they were tied by the red strings of fate after their first battle during the chunin exams.

‘God, that seems so long ago now,’ Temari thought as she walked towards the front door of her house. When she got there, she crossed her arms and leaned her back against the wall. ‘He’s late…’

Temari undid her hair ties, letting her blonde hair fall past her shoulders. She was trying to distract herself from the disappointment creeping in the back of her mind. Finally, she heard footsteps. Her eyes darted eagerly towards the door – just at the right height, where her husband would eventually look up and meet her eyes.

“Temari,” Shikamaru said, raising his brows, surprised to see her there, “…Sorry, did you wait for me?” He slipped out of his shoes, walked over and gave her a small peck on the cheek.

Temari scoffed. “No,” she lied. She turned around on her heel to hide her face. “It’s leftovers for dinner tonight. You should clean yourself up first.”

Temari made a move to leave, but she suddenly lost control of her muscles. Her eyes managed to look below her and confirmed that Shikamaru had used his shadow binding jutsu to stop her. He kept her still as his hands wrapped around her body, his head resting in the hollow of her neck, right behind her ear.

“Your hair isn’t up today,” Shikamaru whispered. He was merely stating an obvious fact, but Temari was glad he had noticed. He released her from his jutsu only to confine her movements with his arms.

“Do you like it better when it’s up?”

“I don’t care about that trivial stuff. What’s more important is how you feel. Have I been a bad husband by neglecting you?”

Temari felt herself blush. She hoped that he wouldn’t notice.

“So I have,” Shikamaru sighed, a little disappointed in himself.

‘Damn it,’ Temari cursed. He definitely noticed. “You’re the Hokage’s advisor. I can’t blame you for doing your job.”

“I’ll quit.”

“No, don’t. This role suits you. If I wanted some idiot who was back by 5 PM every day, I wouldn’t be here.”

“Are you saying you married me for my smarts?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself. I merely stated that I like that you’re the Hokage’s advisor.”

“Where’s Shikadai?”

Comment: This was a one-shot before and has been re-released as a full length story of it’s own. I’ve heard that this manga won a lot of awards and was about to give it a chance and then BOOM HARADA. I AIN’T TRUSTING.

Also, HOLD THE PRESSES IT’S SHOUTA AOI’S FIRST BLCD AND OMG HARADA STRAIGHT OFF THE BAT?! AND SUGITA TOMOKAZU??? HOW MUCH WAS THE BUDGET FOR THIS??? Like the manga, it’s like they got angels to fall for this casting!

I recently started reading the Chinese web novel To Rule in a Turbulent World thanks to a rec from @andoqin who seems to have novel preferences freakishly aligned with mine and I am here to rec the hell out of it!!!!

If I had to describe it in two words it would be - Gay Minglan.

Seriously.

It’s a BL novel but honestly, it’s a slice of life period novel with fascinating characters and setting that happens to have a gay OTP, not a romance in a period setting per se. It’s meticulously written and smart and deals with character development and somehow makes daily minutia fascinating (I never thought I’d find daily farming things interesting but here I am.)

OK, to get to the set up.

Our protagonist, You Miao, is the son of a fabulously wealthy merchant, sent to the capital to make connections and study. As the story starts, he buys a sex slave on a whim from his friend (OK, wait wait wait don’t go, why are you bailing :P) Basically You Miao sees his friend’s servants beating someone to death, feels bad, and buys him because, as we discover gradually and organically, You Miao may be wealthy and occasionally immature but he is a genuinely good person.

Lets back up - You Miao - our protag. He is the main reason I love the novel. It’s hard to write a character who is wealthy, kinda spoiled, sometimes immature and still make him eminently likeable. You Miao is also smart, pragmatic, funny, surprisingly laid back, a people person, and with a stubborn streak a mile wide. He is not perfect in any way but he is a real living breathing person I came to love.

Anyway, the ostensible sex slave he buys is a barbarian from beyond the wall, named Li Zhifeng. It’s touch and go if the man will survive but eventually he does and You Miao, who by then has to return home, gives him his papers and lets him go (not before they have some pretty explicit sex because hey - You Miao is all ‘why not, might be fun to try’ and LZF is “dude saved my life, why not.’ One of the things I love about the story is that there is no instalove - both sex and love make sense in the way and the order they happen; the two bang on a semi regular basis long before their feelings fully develop into love, which is pretty gradual and realistic.) However, LZF decides to stick with You Miao instead, both out of sense of debt for YM saving his life and because he genuinely likes him. Heh. One of the pleasures of the novel so far, to me, is watching LZG slowly transform from a piece of wood automaton into a genuine person who allows himself joy or temper.

Anyway, the two take up farming (making YM’s mom’s estate prosperous), get involved in the imperial exams, fight invaders etc. (Though I am not there yet.) There is a cool imperial dude, the secret of LZF’s origins (though I figured it out long before it apparently got revealed), etc etc.

Honestly, this is not a wild plot ride. What it really has in spades are wonderful characters and their development, descriptions of daily life that are mesmerizing, and of course, a pretty damn good romance.
