Google's decision to censor its site more broadly in response to Europeans' requests to delete information about themselves sets a dangerous precedent, the digital rights group CDT says.
Ā Googleās use for most people is to find information on whatever their interested in. From this article we can see that the things that we search may not always give us authentic results. Instead we will get the things approved by other entities to be shown on Google. Although it is known that the top results on Google are usually sponsored itās not widely known that Google actually censors potential results that can actually be helpful to users. In this article it talks about EU residents that wish to delete information about themselves or at least censor it from the other residents in their country as people should have the right to ābe forgottenā. The negative of people being able to censor themselves on Google is that it can effect the knowledge we learn about the beliefs and ideas people have. This makes less people represented in research making it less accurate. I think this issue connects to the contemporary regulatory environment because the growth of Google, specifically the rise in peer-to-peer sharing, makes monitoring who sees your information very difficult causing privacy issues. Thatās why self-regulation on the internet is becoming more common. So I understand why people would want to delete themselves off Google but I also understand that it would make it difficult for people researching because the information is limited to only what is allowed to be viewed. Overall I think instead of people self-regulating they shouldnāt post something they would be to embarrassed to show the public in the first place because the internet is definitely not a private place.Ā
I think this is a good post Huda, chucking in a quote from the article and then using it to explain your position would have been better, but it is a pretty good summary all the same. I think the real issue is where is the boundary between an individualās right to privacy and societyās right to free information. Which one is more important? Thatās a tough question to answer!
Product Placement. Product Placement can be best defined as a method by which companies pay a certain amount of money to Movie producers to have them display their products in the movie. Even in the Just released Sky fall James Bond Movie we had Product placement as seen in the video above, Where Heineken payed an amount of $45,000,000 to have James Bond sip from the Heineken bottle in a scene although his hand might have obscured the label. All in all , around $200 million was accepted by the sky fall production to display products like CAT tractor, Audi, Vaio laptop, Sony phone, Mccallan and Jaguar in different scenes. Mccallan alone got a whooping $9,000,000 worth of exposure value only because of the movie, this shows us how effective the Visual type of product placement is . Product Placement can occur in different ways could be Visual that is where a product, service or a logo can simply be observed, It could also be Spoken when a product, service, or corporation is mentioned in the movie and lastly it could be usage when an on-screen personality interacts or handles the product, service, or corporation (Both Spoken and visual). I believe Product placement is very effective itās a method of Advertising your product, Giving Customers awareness of your product worldwide. It also strengthens brand loyalty from current users that is to say Consumers who see a product or logo in a movie or television program that they have purchased are positively reinforced.
Great Jason! You did reference the source, but it would have been better if you spoke about specific scenes where the products appeared in your source. Still, fantastic stuff and a very clear post.Ā

From the image above we can see that some migrants are trying to come to europe to seek for a better life. After the second world war many africans and people from the middle east decided to start migrating in europe which is also known as Fortress europe under illegal conditions and it is predicted that if nothing is done in the future , it will be worst. Many Africans and Middle easters are trying to enter europe through illegal ways . Many europeens are against illegal migration. You can see the quotes from the image aboveĀ āNo Illegal immigrationā The media through media text iike images are trying so sensibilize the population against futur Ā illegal migration in this fortress Ā which is a danger for europe and the migrants themselves!
Hi Guy, firstly, after the Second World War, Europeans migrated away from Europe because the entire continent was a smoking ruin half wracked by communist revolutions. Secondly, again, donāt examine the issue, examine how the media talk about the issue. If you have chosen this source, what is this source saying about the issue, what message is it trying to send, how does this message tie in with the idea of fortress Europe?
The global village is heading to a future that will divert to too many roads.
In this post and in my future posts, I will be explaining the different predictions of what is going to happen to the global village.
Starting off with the future of Cool Consumers and a Growing Global Village
This prediction points out that people in the future, as it is now, are going to rely more on communicating and shopping through technology, such as the internet and mobile service.
āI want it allā today and future consumers are giving the retail companies challenges, as to cope up with the consumer demands as it is mentioned in the article above.
In order to keep up this growing and happy consumer global village, all there has to be a personal mobile phone or computer for each individual, and friendly convenient and easy access shopping websites and communicating apps
I personally shop online more than I go to a store and pick my clothes, I even shop for my groceries online and wait for it to arrive to my door step. In my opinion this future is where we are really headed, and most - if not all, Ā people who use these technologies find it more convenient as a use of communication and easier.Ā
is the topic hereĀ āthe effect of the global village on the way people shopā orĀ āthe effect of globalisation and technology on the way people shopā. What does your source say about this idea? How does this relate to the idea of hte global village? I need a little more examination of the theory and the sources. Donāt forget to relate the source to the theory!
A less examined future of the global future is put under the phrase āFortressā
The European fortress was being used by Nazi propaganda, namely to refer to Hitlerās and the Wehrmachtās plans to fortify the whole of occupied Europe, in order to prevent invasion from the British Isles. And that is where the phrase came from.
In the picture above we can see European citizens trying to fled to North America. In the past, other countries borders weāre open and welcoming to immigrants who are leaving their countries because of war, However, In the past 5 years according to Crawley (2009) the uk and European public attitude for asylum and immigration has become increasingly and generally, negative.
This picture has been trending online for a while with a saying āThese arenāt Syrians. Theyāre Europeans trying to get to North Africa during World War II. So next time you think of closing the borders you might want to check with your grandparents.ā
It is kind of harsh to compare the past with the present. Today, countries have different interests and are welling to disconnect from other countries for own benefits. However, the unwanted migrants in the European countries will remain, and will always have trouble with receiving the essential rights for living. What is presented in the media, I believe, is the main cause for the increasingly negative attitude of asylum and migration
I think that this negative public attitude is common these days, since people today who are migrating and are refuges are most likely to be from the middle east Arab or muslim. And perhaps after the events of 9/11 and all that has happened because of ISIS the public came more aware of their right to be secure physically, emotionally and financially than just helping other nations and protecting them.
Hi Aseel, when you are discussing the global futures part of globalisation, you need to examine how the media discuss it or represent it. The point is not to discuss the issue itself (for example refugees), but how the issue is discussed in the media. You need to look at the language used and the images the media chooses to present and examine those.Ā
Caryn Clark is the voiceover for this commercial for the Hannah Montana Fashion Moves Dolls.
SynergyĀ
Synergy is defined as the combined marketing of products or commodities which are often owned by the same corporation that the total effect would be greater than the sum of the different parts. This is related to product placement. This is a technique in which the products are used to promote one another, and theyāre all linked by the same thing. Above is a Ā good example of how that is. Hannah Montana was a T.V show that aired on the Disney Channel for 4 years. The more the show became successful, the more merchandise was available. The more of that, the merrier. The Hannah Montana dolls promoted the Hannah Montana bedroom accessories, which promoted the Hannah Montana party decorations, which then promoted the T.V show (and the movies!), which promoted how great and wonderful Disney was. Think of all the merchandise of every franchise-this technique is effective. In my opinion-forget about the actors/musicians/artists- yes, they become successful and yes, they make a lot of money. But the aim in all of this is one thing- and thatās to make the big companies that the movies/T.V shows work with look good, and make more money. Itās a very effective technique, considering how much money they make just off the merchandising alone. Itās also something Iāve experienced first hand. I was a huge Hannah Montana fan, and I did have the school supplies with her face on it, the clothes and the party decorations (ONLY the invitations and plates). These things- they do make children happy because thereās more of what they like. Today, itās more with animated movies, like Frozen. But itās not just for children- it can be for everyone. Think of Star Wars fans. This year, their merchandising was everywhere-even at M&Mās world.Ā
Hi Saba, this is a good start, but you need to be a little clearer about the advantage. Why is synergy effective? What sort of advantage does it bring? What is the synergistic relationship between the Hannah Montana cartoon and the party supplies in your picture? or the doll in your video? You need to directly tie the sources you have used to the theory and explain how they work. Good ideas, but closer connection to the sources needed!
Donāt ignore the source!
Philippa Malas on the French court ruling that Facebook can't settle all its disputes in California.
Ā Starting from the 1980ā²s until today many sources of media have started to be deregulated. This removed restriction on what could be on the mediaĀ ālooseningā what could be broadcasted giving them less public service obligations. Although the amount of deregulation there was depended on which country the media was being broadcast. For example the process of deregulation has effected most Western countries much more than a lot of Eastern countries where regulation of media is more common than not.
Ā In the article we learn that Facebook has gotten into trouble for trying to regulate the photos people upload online by removing ones that they deem inappropriate. People are angry at Facebook as they think the photos that got removed were unjustified. For example in this article they mention that a photo of a mother breastfeeding her baby got removed because it was showing nudity. Although the big issue that has caused Facebook to land in court was the removal of the photos by a French art teacherĀ FrĆ©dĆ©ric Durand-Baissas who posted a photo of the paintingĀ LāOrigine du Monde by Gustave Courbet ( a painting of a womanās genitals).Ā FrĆ©dĆ©ric Durand-Baissas argues that although the photo shows nudity it is his freedom of expression and it is his right to put it on Facebook and now he wantsĀ ā¬20,000 in damages because it caused his account to be terminated. Facebook replied that not only was the post against their guidelines they should not face the French court but go to court in California, where they are based, but this was denied by the French court. Overall this issue shows that regulation laws can cause issues as each country has their own ideology on how free their media can be. In my opinion I think Facebook should not be sued asĀ FrĆ©dĆ©ric Durand-Baissas agreed to the terms and conditions of Facebook and they had a right to delete his account if he was posting nude art.
I remember a similar situation on Instagram, where a young lady was trying to express what girls felt on their periods through photos that she took ofĀ ābloodā, white sheets and stains. Instagram took down the posts since they found itĀ āinappropriateā which made a big fuss over the internet since sometimes, the things that social media websites censor are actually forms of art and self expressing and by deleting these posts they deny people their freedom of speech and opinion.Ā
Hi Huda, this is an interesting post. Are you saying that France is trying to re-regulate media? The article says this is a powerful precedent. Do you think the consequences would be a positive thing or a negative thing if online media was to be regulated by different national laws depending on the jurisdiction?

The global villageĀ
The global village is seeing the world as a village interconnected through media (telephones, computers, newspapers etc). This idea was developed by Marshall McLuhan who believed technology was what destroyed walls between other countries and cultures and had changed the idea of distance, time and communication causing the world to shrink. When McLuhan predicted the global village before the internet had come around hence causing the global village to be much more applicable compared to when he predicted it because back then there was only telephones, televisions and computers. Globalisation is important to the global village because it is what interconnect the different parts of the world. An example would be when a natural disaster takes place on the other side of the world it still can effect us. Marshall in the video above, states thatĀ āā¦they photographs, movies, radio tv all these change at once the way we see, or hear, or touch, or feel ourselves and our world.ā He believed that it influences us everyday and in different ways because it constantly changes what we want.Ā āYou canāt have a point of view in the Electronic Ageā. In my opinion, the global village will always apply and is important to everyday life. I believe applications like Facebook, Skype and Twitter are what brings us together, gets rid of borders and unites us like a village.Ā
Excellent, concept, definition, examination, (you didnt really connect it directly to the source, but you summarised the source so you get this one) Just great Melisa!!! Look how well youāre doing; just look how happy they are :-)
iPad
Product Placement
This post is going to be about product placement. In particular, Apple product placement. I found it very interesting when I found out that they actually donāt pay for their products to show. In 2011 alone, their products made 891 T.V appearances, and they showed up in over 40% of movies that were box office hits. Whatās their secret? Here it is: They hand out free iPhones, iPads, MacBooks- as much as the production needs. Apple relies heavily on these movie/ T.V appearances because the traditional commercial has been seeing a huge decline in the past couple of years. They sell through celebrities. Not only that- they sell through celebrities AND their products actually work AND literally it has everything a person can possibly need in a phone, or laptop and more? AND thereās a thing called iCloud where a person can upload and back up all their things- FOR FREE? I think everyoneās getting the point. In my opinion, I love Apple so Iām not going to lie, I am pretty biased. I think that they are innovators when it comes to technology, and I think that them handing out free iPhones, iPads, laptops- whatever the product is- itās pretty clever. And itās definitely not a bad day at work, considering the prices of some of these products ( or all of them). This technique works, though, and we see it everywhere. Apple is everywhere. Ā
Hi Saba!Ā
Wow that Ad is almost as old as me (almost!). First of all, remember you need to define the theory or term that you are talking about. You need to define what product placement is and you need to explain how your sources are examples of that theory. You have told us why and how Apple does it and that is definitely interesting, but we need you to do the basics first. What is it and how are your samples examples of it. Still, interesting stuff.Ā
Hey peeps,Ā
Did I give feedback on all the posts? So many of Hudaās cats to get through (jk Huda). Seriously though, I looked around, but if I missed yours pm me what it is called or a permalink and Iāll make sure I do it.Ā
. In all the 196 countries in the world today, you will discover that there is atleast one shop that sell american products. From the image above you can see that you can find a nike shop in paris , a disney store in london and a macdonald fast food in rome. All these are american productions. Every where in the world you will find something that is culturally american. This is because america has conquered the world in most aspects especially culturally. They dominate the world in media due to the fact that they have the available resources and the neccesary technic to extend their culture world wide. In my Country for example(Cameroon) all youths want to wear an american brand or dress like american actors and i think thatās the case elsewhere in the world today and their main tool to expand their cuture is by using the media such as TV , Radio and musics, Internet as well.
Personally , i think that the american dominance is not that good because it makes us abandon our original cultures and values. Many people around the world want to behave like americans and they tend to forget their local way of life.
Hi Guy, not bad, the political cartoon is making a straightforward point. What is the theory here though? Is it american dominance of global media? If it is Iām not sure what the connection is with the source. Need to be a little clearer at the beginning of the post as to what the purpose of the post is .
Before November's terrorist attacks in Paris, it was legal to stage a demonstration in a public square in that city. Now it isn't. In
The public sphere is where you can freely go discuss and identify social problems. It is a place where individuals can come together to share their mutual interests/concerns, come up with a common judgment and how you influence political action. Jürgen Habermas wrote a book where he gathered modern concepts of the public sphere and he believes that in the 18th century a new local society had emerged. The article I linked above states how the since after the Paris attacks demonstrations have been banned. This limits the freedom of speech. āAll around the world, it seems, the walls are closing in on the space that people need to assemble, associate, express themselves freely, and register dissent. Even as the internet and communications technology have made speaking up publicly technically easier than ever, ubiquitous state and commercial surveillance has ensured that expression, association, and protest remain constrained. In short, speaking up has never required more courage.ā This quote from the article mentions how technology has made it easier for todays society to express their opinions and ideas thus expanding the public sphere. I believe that the public sphere is a helpful idea to get political opinions from the community to make a change in their government/society. Ā
Ā I really like the issue you raised about how the public sphere is being threatened when demonstrations such as the ones after the Paris attacks have been banned. It relates to my topic about media regulation and censorship and how people are not able to express how they truly feel. In my opinion the place the public sphere would work best is on the internet because I think itās the hardest media form to regulate.
Hey Melly, this is interesting and a well structured post, linked well to the article with a quote. It was a little confusing that before the quote you said that it limits freedom of speech and then after the quote you said that it is easier to speak. You should have said something along the lines of āThis quote from the article mentions how technology has made it easier for todays society to express their opinions and ideas thus expanding the public sphere, however, free speech is still under attack on many frontsā or something like that. Still great structure, good work on using the language from the source. I think you get wunderbar!

This video was done for my New Media class with Michael Strangelove & inspired by his book "Empire of the Mind".
The public sphere between the past and the present
Jürgen Habermas - the German sociologist and philosopher, is best known for his theory: The public sphere.
The public sphere is basically described as an area in a a period of time where people can share and discuss latest news. Where they identify and debate over social problems and might actually influence the political actions of a government.
In the 17th and 18th century in London, the public sphere was known to be the coffee-houses around the city, such as, Jonathanās and Garrawayās and also Lloydās. Habermas suggested that at that time coffee houses are the public sphere where āprivate peopleā could go to a great gathering place to discuss news, business, politics and also just to have a convivial chit chat. These coffee houses were used as an opportunity to a lively and open discussion with a sphere of varied social backgrounds of patrons.
The swiss noble CĆ©sar de Saussure in 1726 wrote ā..workmen habitually begin the day by going to coffee rooms to read the latest news.ā
Baring in mind that the media back then was always controlled by corporates such as the church or the government. A time where it was hard for people to be individual and free thinkers.
Nowadays however, we can see that our public sphere has become more global, with an easier reach to the latest news and an easier way for people to discuss and influence political actions.
āTo own the medium of the message, is to own the meaning of the messageā
In the past corporations used to control the meaning of all the messages, since they held the power to expose what ever they wanted the people to believe, using news papers, magazines, advertising and satellite news channels.
Today however, as it is mentioned in the video above, corporations are not the only medium we can use in order to rely a certain message. Social media has become a medium that we own in order to rely our own messages.
Social media has helped taking out the medium from the hands of the few and putting it into the hands of many. Each day people add to the public sphere - through blogging and sharing different posts, creating a bigger global network, where discussions are being made and free opinions are being spread without anyone censoring it.
I know I blabbered a lot about the public sphere, however, it because I find this topic really interesting, since I, like other people, like to share what I believe and I like to discuss what I know with other people, that are also interested in the things I am interested in. Today the public sphere, is more global and contains many discussions and opinions, that are leading to change and leading to enlightenment to many different things around the world. Such as the Arab spring, Green Peace campaign against Barbie. I find this as amazing, because people simply have a choice and are not bound to a powerful organisations that can control the world because they simply have loads of money.
I totally agree with you Aseel. We are living today in a global sphere. In thirty minutes , you can know what is happening on major areas of the world due to news on TV and Social Medias.. I like your Blog post! :)Ā
This is a great post Aseel, do you think there are any substantial differences (apart from being global) between the public sphere of today and the public sphere of the coffee house. I thought your examination of the role of companies in controlling the medium was interesting. You went over the word limit a bit, but ill let you off just this once. The only other thing I will mention is that you need to connect the post to the source. Your post is great, but how is the source an example of the theory you are talking about in your post? Is the video an example of the public sphere? If you had found an article that discussed how the internet was allowing people to discuss politics or something of that nature you could have used it as evidence for your post. So make sure there is a clear connection between your post and your source. Still, a great effort.Ā
Product Placement
Product placement is the process in which manufacturing companies pay to have their products exposed in television programs, movies, or music videos. The bond movies seem to be popular with product placing cars, watches, phones and drinks; with every second on screen the product has counting in millions being paid. In the latest movie Skyfall Heineken beer was a clear example of product placement. Heineken paid almost 45 million dollars to have the beer featured in the movie. You might ask why not just invest this kind of money in a TV Advertisement or something? Well, that is the whole point of product placing; it features in contexts devoid of Ads. According to Bloomberg Business ā66% of viewers skip, mute or otherwise ignore TV adverts. 90% of people watching pre-recorded media skip the ads. 78% of marketers feel that TV advertising is sharply declining ā That is why it makes more sense to have your product strategically placed in movies when people wouldnāt expect it, and what a better movie to invest in than a James Bond franchise which would have it exposed to millions of viewers world wide. I think that product placing is indeed becoming a smart way for manufacturers to showcase their real world products/brands in fictional worlds on screens when they arenāt expected. Sometimes product placement is done in a smart way but other times when Iām watching a TV program or music video and the product is just too āin your faceā I personally find it disfavouring.
Hey Nada, we need a link to a media source for your post? Did you post it separately and I missed it?
