HobbyKing YEP 150A (2~6S) SBEC Brushless Speed Controller

I decided to get started with a Helicopter / Plane ESC for its popularity and affordable price.

I also had to buy a programming card separately to configure the ESC. It’s very easy to program and there are a lot of videos on YouTube explaining each setting individually.

I intend to buy a High Voltage VESC in the future and I thought this one would be a good learning tool.

My battery provides max current of 150a which matched up perfectly with the ESC. The motor has a max loading of 70a so I hope this ESC can handle the amount of current without issues.

I was able to run some tests using a servo tester for about 10 min without heavy load. The ESC temperature remained stable as the motor had a minor increase.

I setup the ESC ‘PWM Freq’ to as low as possible (8khz) and will run more tests to see if it makes any difference.

The ESC provides settings for Brakes, Free wheel, Battery Cells, Heli or Plane start, etc.

I will start with this high discharge Li-po battery for the first prototype. It will provide enough voltage and current to the project up an running.

A lot of people use two pack of 3S in series to fit in slim battery cases. It is not the case for this this project as I intend to improve the battery system later.

Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 245kv

Parts are starting to arrive...

I did a lot of reading and decided to get started with a “work-horse” motor. Most of people don’t recommend the use of anything higher than 290kv for electric skateboards - torque vs speed relationship. Considering that I am building a cruiser board (30-35km/h) and not a high speed one I decided to use the 245kv as an experiment.

It looks really solid and quite heavy for its size. I don’t see this being really practical for daily commute if used as dual system.
