âJust because your dad did it doesnât mean Hal can,â Dick objected, his eyebrows furrowing. âWhy do you talk about your life like youâre resigned to just⌠settling? This isnât a business deal with some hot shot CEO from America that forces you to compromise, this is the rest of your life. Doesnât it scare you that someone else is calling the shots?â He pressed his lips together in pause, and maybe a twinge of regret. He always spoke his mind, and his filter was practically nonexistent, which he figured Marcella probably wouldnât appreciate. But heâd already said it, so he continued. âDonât you want⌠Control?â
Maybe thatâs why Hal did it. Dick didnât even want to go down that path, so he grinned instead. âI donât think I know what you mean at all. The real reason is that you donât want to marry me. Hands down, worst husband ever. You should already go ahead and divorce me, honestly. Youâre not the issue at all.â
His comments made her angry, but not outwardly so. Marcella had never been one to express outward emotion, ever. Even as a child, before she was adopted, she had been that way. âI have control of the situation. No, I canât control him. As we have both seen in the recent weeks, you cannot control the actions of the ones you love. They do as they wish and there is not anything-â she sighed, âI cannot control him. But I can control myself, and I still have control of this situation.â Most of it. The very fact that she could not control Henry limited everything.
âYouâre right-â her face fell and she looked away, âIâm divorcing you right this second. Our hypothetical marriage would be nothing but misery on both of our parts.â Probably just hers though. Benedick would not make a good husband. She wasnât even sure if she liked him yet, he just happened to be the only person in this situation that she could stand at this point. She took a sip of her water. âHowever, youâll have to break it to the hypothetical children and the hypothetical dog. Also to my hypothetical new personal assistant because in this new, hypothetical future I get to fire Brunhilde.â
Hearing the stern tone in Marcellaâs voice gave him pause; something about the way she spoke told him he had to calm down, now, before he did something rash. He tried to allow his rising anger to evaporate, or at least try to have a handle on it, but it was impossible. Internally, a part of him knew that Dina would have been able to help. If he could see her. Standing there, he watched in silence as the woman beside him spoke to the doctor, and with a frightened glance in Patrickâs direction, the man scurried off.
âThank you,â he gritted his teeth, torn between knowing she didnât deserve any of this malice and needed someone to take his frustration out on. Finally, he answered her question, his voice full of venom. âDinaâ she got hit by a car. Hamlet Nielsenâs car.â Patrick pinched his nose between his fingers, letting out a long sigh. âIâm going to kill him.â
The Hamlet Nielsen ordeal had been in her morning briefing. And while she didnât care for the boy, his mother had been helpful over the last few weeks. Gertrude had been nice, perhaps for her own personal gain, but kindness was something Marcella appreciated. She wasnât sure who this Dina girl was, another nobody who was caught in the cross fires of Veronaâs elite. It was a pity. Yet, apparently she was important to Patrick, and again, Marcella appreciated kindness, and Patrick had been kind to her. She did not trust him, or really like him, but she did appreciate kindness. âDina is your- girlfriend?â such childish terms.Â
âOh donât be dramatic Patrick, if you want to end him you can be much more creative than actually taking his life.â
âAnd are there any clauses to this agreement that I should know about?â
âOf course. Clauses on both sides, of course, but that kind of talk is for the office. Caesar Investment would be pleased to have you.âÂ
âI am aware of that. I also value a womanâs personality. Iâm Ariel Castello.â
âOh, fantastic. Iâve recently been told that I donât have one those. Perhaps you should seek companionship elsewhere then.â
âAlas, it it good to meet you Ariel Castello.â

âMy, what a lovely face. Might I have the pleasure of knowing the name of whom it belongs to?â
âI thank you for the compliment sir, however, a woman can be so much more than a face.â
âBut- Marcella Caesar.â
âNope. Not happening. Donât even think about it.â
âI know, I know, you have your own thing going with your business however-â
âCaesar investment is always looking for competent, able partners. The offer is on the table when you are ready to negotiate.âÂ
âYou look like youâve had a rough day. Can I get you a drink?â
âI donât usually drink, but today has been less than pleasant so-â
âI suppose one drink couldnât hurt.â
He listened quietly, nodding occasionally to let her know he was paying attention. Marcella was smart. Dick didnât still didnât understand her goals, or ambitions, but they seemed almost⌠selfless. They were for the greater good instead of for herself, even if that meant marrying someone who would cheat on her just because he got his feelings hurt. It was hard to believe that this was the person he yelled at only two weeks ago. âNo, you arenât the most agreeable person,â he agreed, giving another lopsided grin to show he didnât mean any offense. âBut⌠I donât think that gives him an excuse to what he did to you. I donât think it gives him an excuse to just⌠have whatever meltdown heâs having right now. I know Hal better than I know myself, but I just donât know the person heâs acting like right now, and I donât know if heâs going to snap out of it. Heâs not the guy your father approved of right now.â
He watched her for a moment, taking a sip of the detox fruit water â which was surprisingly good â and when he sat down the glass he was speaking before he could stop himself. âI fit that criteria, by the way,â he laughed, genuinely amused by what she said. âIâm definitely not dull. Iâm a little rusty, but I know what fork is meant for salad and what fork is meant for desert and all that ridiculous shit. Iâm also charming as fuck, thank you very much.â He paused before he laughed again. âOh my God, wait, you donât know who my family is, do you? Iâm not from around here, but I guess thatâs reasonable, but you have heard of a little place called Windsor, England, right?â
âIf thatâs all you need in a husband, and if IÂ fit that description, donât you think youâll be able to find someone else? I mean, hell, just fucking marry me.â
She sighed, âYouâre right. I think my father approved of him because of Halâs supposed loyalty towards me. My father knew that-â Hal would fall for her? Perhaps. But agreements had been made when they were just children. When she was still thought in Russian and he was too cool to hang out with girls. âRegardless, my father was a philanderer himself, any extramarital relations would not lessen his image of Henry, I believe.â
Marcella thought to dismiss the man entirely. She did not keep up with the politics of England as much as she should, Christ, who had the time? She was running a Forbes Fortune 500 company for crying out loud. But then she heard the name Windsor and finally it all clicked.
âOh, stop it. You donât want to marry me, Benedick. Regardless of your pedigree, marrying me is not-â ideal? For anyone? âYou know what I mean.â

âDonât try and fucking calm me down,â the words came out low and rough, completely uncharacteristic of Patrick. Rarely did he get angry, but his blood was boiling as his fingers clenched into a fist, his knuckles turning white. âDinaâI need to see Dina. Right now, or Iâll go crazy.â He looked at the person before him, fury and frustration and heartbreak burning in his intense gaze. âAre you going to let me see her or do I need to make you?â
âPatrick. Language.â It wasnât the cursing that bothered her, it was his tone: anger and passion, and directed towards some innocent doctor. Marcella turned from Patrick to the doctor, âMy name is Marcella Caesar, and I think you know what that name means. Perhaps you could get this gentleman here some answers, it would mean a great deal to me, personally-â the doctor nodded, assured her that he was doing his best, and would be back soon.
She did not care about Patrick or his pesky problems, but she also knew it was likely the doctor would leave him here waiting if she left his side. âWhatâs going on here?â
âWe keep meeting.â / âRemember despite our estrangement, Iâm your man.â / âYour perfume smells like your daddyâs got money.â [ FOR PATRICK ]
âWe keep meeting.â
âNot because I want to, mind you. I need you to send my personal assistant your measurements. She has sent you three emails, Patrick. Three. Emails. I understand that everyone in the wedding party has slept with one another at this point, but you should all follow my example and get over the pettiness and grow up. I need you to send the damn measurements by five.â
âRemember despite our estrangement, Iâm your man.â
âPatrick, while that was a very good impersonation, I came here to tastefully drink in public, not to be cheered up.â
âYour perfume smells like your daddyâs got money.âÂ
âMy father was murdered on the steps of the city council building. I can tell you were attempting humor of some sort, but itâs fallen short.â
He couldnât help it â he gave a lopsided grin when Marcella cursed, though he immediately pressed his lips together to pretend like he hadnât. The past two conversations they had showed him she was a lot more than his first impression. She was funny, whether she meant to be or not. âThatâs an understatement, yeah. Fucked up,â he agreed, still fighting his twitching lips.
He stretched his arm to pull the glass closer to her, still lazily leaned over the counter. His eyebrows twitched as he frowned. âWhy donât you just call off the engagement?â he asked. âYou donât have to make anything public. There areâ there are a lot of eligible bachelors out there who would kick themselves silly for a shot with you, and I bet none of them will cheat on you. If he doesnât marry you, he loses med school. I think thatâs the deepest you can cut him.â
He paused, watching her curiously. âIâve understood Halâs leverage in this arrangement, but Iâve never understood yours. What do you lose if you donât marry him? Specifically him? If itâs something, is it really worth this? Donât you think you deserve a hell of a lot better than someone who canât figure out if heâs in love with you or Bea?â
âIâm sure theyâre out there, but finding a decent man is difficult to find. I canât marry anyone dull, or completely brainless, or anyone unpolished. I canât marry someone without goals, charm is nice as well and- these are not traits that I just desire, well, theyâre needed. I am a Caesar, I canât just marry any man who comes my way, you know. Especially since- Iâve been promised to Hal for so long.â she paused, and took a sip of her water. âAnd Iâm not the most agreeable person, am I? I have faults, not many, but they are there. I do not like to bring feelings into the equation but- at least Hal liked me for who I am. Or- I thought he did. That was- that was a nice feeling.â
âPlus, if I do not marry Hal, I lose his parentâs support, which is still important to following through with what my father wanted. And I lose-â him. She still wanted to be with him. She no longer liked him, or really wanted to be around him. But she still wanted to be with him. How wretched a man to make her feel at all, much less feel love or desire. He wondered why she had hidden away her emotions for so long, and this was not her original reason for doing so. â-I lose the man my father thought was the most suitable partner for me. Iâm not sure if you ever met him, but my father was a very, very wise man.â
âIâll leave you to itâ âI have been looking for youâ
âIâll leave you to itâÂ
âNo. Hero- wait. What if the crust burns? Or they donât cool all the way and it doesnât set correctly? You should stay, I donât want to mess them up.â
.
âI have been looking for youâ
âNo, no. Iâve been looking for you. Thereâs someone here I want you to meet, remember that businesswoman from America I was telling you about? Well sheâs here and wants to meet you. Sheâll love you of course, and I think sheâll offer you that year long internship for after graduation that we discussed. Thatâll be perfect. Iâm so happy for you.

She didnât say much as she set about making the tea. She seemed calm but really she felt like every nerve in her body was wired to the fact that this women was in her apartment. She felt everything from guilt to anger to resentment to jealousy. She just had to focus on the damn tea to keep from any of those emotions to come out in a ugly way. Well an uglier way than they already have.Â
She let Marcella finish speaking before placing a mug in front of her filled with steaming tea. âIâm sorry, that people got caught in the cross fires of this, including you. I am.â She didnât say that she wasnât sorry that she did it though, even Beatrice wasnât that stupid. âBut maybe you should be saying this to Hal. Because heâs the one who kissed me, brought me back to his room and from what he said it sounded like he didnât think you would care at all.âÂ
âAs for staying away from him⌠Halâs been my best friend for years. I wonât go after him but staying away from him wonât be so easy. Sorry but thats the truth.â
Marcella did not believe that Beatrice was sorry that she had been caught up in all of this. How does one not expect repercussions of their actions? Adults understood that. And clearly, neither Henry or his mistress were mature enough to realize that they would each have to pay for their actions. It would be easy to vilify the woman, as most scorned women so often do to the women their significant other cheated with. Yet to vilify one and not the other would be problematic. Thus, she would hold them each accountable.Â
âOh Iâve already told Hal how I feel about this, and will continue to do so until I feel like heâs atoned. Believe me, heâs not getting off of the hook so easily. But it is also unfair to treat you as an unwilling participant in the events that transpired. The fact that he wrongfully believed that I would not care does not justify the actions that occurred.âÂ
She took a sip of the still hot tea. âBeatrice, did I ask you to stay away from him completely? Of course not. I would be unreasonable for me to ask him to stay away from one of his friends, especially one of his best friends. Iâm not that person. You donât need my permission to be in his life, but you do need to understand that I am apart of his life now too. Iâm not going anywhere. Thatâs exactly why I want to be civil with you.â Marcella was a woman of action. If she really wanted Beatrice gone, she could have the other woman on a cargo plane to Argentina by now. Marcella did not like Beatrice, but it was not uncommon for Marcella to not like people. Verona was literally full of people she hated, what was one more?Â
Dickâs lips curled in disgust. âDid he really fucking say that to you? Jesus Christ.â He shook his head and dropped his hat on the kitchen counter, biting the inside of his lip so he didnât explode. He felt like he didnât even know who Hal was over the past week. It was like someone flipped a switch, and suddenly his best friend as replaced by a complete asshole.
He cleared his throat, laughing slightly. âI should probably go for the detox fruit water, yeah,â he replied, leaning over the counter as she poured her drink. He winced at the mention of Beatrice, scratching the back of his neck with an awkward shrug. âNot really a mutual friend, no, but I know a lot.â
âBeatrice is my ex girlfriend,â he continued, with a nonchalant wave of his hand. He was putting on face, but so was she, so it wasnât like she was going to call him out on it. âIf Hal wants to fuck around and have a quarter life crisis, or whatever it is heâs doing, he can be my guest. The only thing I have to say is that I am sorry. Iâm sorry you have to be engaged to him. I know you donât care about my opinion, and the last advice I gave you was really shitty in hindsight, but dump him in a fucking river.â
âYouâre ex girlfriend?â Marcella had never had a best friend. Allegra was the closest thing to one she had ever had, and even still she kept the other girl at a distance. But even Marcella knew that, in a hypothetical situation in which she would be dating and presumably sexually active, she would leave Allegraâs friends alone. âThatâs, thatâs fucked up-â Benedick had this way of creating genuine reactions within her. Marcella did not appreciate it.Â
âNo, no, your opinion does matter-â She trailed off as she quickly re-wrapped her head around the new development in the situation. â-dumping him in a river isnât a terrible idea-â her father had done it to several of his enemies. Perhaps he would do the same to Hal if he had not been murdered. Or perhaps her father would tell her to grow up, get a grip. People did shitty things.
She handed his glass to him and took a sip of her own water. âI could crucify him for this. I donât think he understands that. Revealing everything would make me look sympathetic, which would give me even more leverage over Antony. Plus it would ruin his career. No woman wants their child looked after by known-cheater.â She sighed. âBut alas, weâll cross the Rubicon if it comes to it.â
âAnd stop apologizing, Benedick. Honestly. Neither one of us should be apologizing about anything.â
