The Entertainment Software Association is a great resource, representing the North American video games industry. They’ve got great detail to help understand the scope of the industry, including sales, demographics of who’s purchasing and who’s playing, and the impact of video games in the 21st century.
Similarly, the International Game Developers Association has a number of useful resources focused on the development of video game software.
Internationally, game development has taken off, and organizations similar to the ESA and IGDA have emerged for a number of international markets. One example is the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment
