This final blog post aims to create a summary of the work done on the project dedicated to the Responsive Environments module at Edinburgh Napier University. It will work as a reflective report on the process of creating a prototype of an interactive intervention meant to improve the way one Edinburgh based park is used. 

There were four main learning outcomes that this project was aiming at:

LO1: Design multimedia projects that make appropriate use of physical, aural, visual, time-based and interaction components to convey a message and reinforce its content.

LO2: Identify the appropriate technology to design a product or installation.

LO3: Develop working prototypes to appropriately augment an interactive product or installation.

LO4: Appraise their work in relation to current practice and theory.

This blog and the prototype itself have helped their creator achieve the first learning outcome. The blog has been updated on regular basis and made good use of the video and photo uploading services offered by Tumblr. On the other hand, the prototype of an interactive screen, created using Max/MSP, has also contributed to the successful completion of the tasks included in this outcome. Although there were a few obstacles along the way of the project and it has been a great challenge, it has also shown the amazing variety of things you can do with this software. The blog and the prototype effectively work as one multi-level multimedia project, highlighting important issues in the environment we all live and work as well as solutions to the worst problems it has.

On the other hand, the second outcome has been achieved again by choosing Max/MSP as a main software solution for the creation of the prototype. The end product aims to work as an interactive screen which will make one public space more exciting, informative and safe.

The third outcome has also been achieved by finishing the prototype developed with the help of Max/MSP. It has been an interesting opportunity for the researcher to communicate an idea born as a result of extensive observation of real-life situations.

The fourth learning outcome of this module has also been achieved as part of the creation of this blog and the prototype. The work on both these projects has highlighted the importance of up to date knowledge about the way public spaces can be improved, as well as interesting ideas on the ways Max/MSP and similar software programs can make design interventions available for the general public. The lectures and tutorials as part of this module has also been a great inspiration for the exploration of other interactive projects such as this one.

As a result of the work on this multimedia project, all four learning outcomes have been given equal level of attention which gave better value to the final products.

The BLOG

Working on a blog like this one has proven as a great challenge to this project. The most difficult part of it was the concept that this is a live, evolving document which would be read by different readers. However, once the first observation part of it was finished, it has become more clear and precise that the blog will not only describe the work done on the project, but it will share with its audience some interesting ideas on how things should be done in order to improve the public environment we all use on daily basis.

The PROTOTYPE

Certainly, creating a working prototype by using Max/MSP has been the hardest part of the project. It is a wonderful piece of software which allows you to create exciting interactive projects, but it has been at times overwhelming and very hard to use. For the creation of the prototype, sometimes interesting solutions to some of the problems have been scrapped because of their unavailability for non-iOS users. At the same time, it has become obvious that the final prototype should consist of less complicated parts in order to work smoothly and present the general idea which has been developed right after the observational part of the project.

Looking back at the final products of this project, it seems obvious that more work can be done in order to create more complicated prototype which can have real impact on the environment it was aimed for. However, the more important bit was the realisation that the public spaces we use every day affect the way we live and that we all can make some changes in order to make them more interesting and pleasant for everyone. There is a little bit of effort needed in order to define the needs of a public space, but such observational projects offer a great way of helping these environments become more user friendly, safe, secure and enjoyable.

There are probably a lot of ways we can make our own life better – by making some changes to the way we do things; but there is a lot more that we can offer to the environment we use and live in. We have to be more open to the ways the technology can improve these places and we should not be afraid to implement even our craziest ideas as working products or prototypes. We are the designers of our future and being able to appreciate the world around us is one of the greatest things we can do. One day our work can make people’s lives easier and this is definitely a cause worth working on and developing even further than this academic module.

The motion detection function I have used as part of my prototype has been taken from the following source (I have used Recipe 32). However, there are a few things I want to mention in relation to this. The output action of the motion detection has become 0s and 1s. These outputs control the first camera in the prototype. On the other hand, the idea has now developed in having two cameras instead of one. The first will be low cost camera which will follow for movement in the park. The second one should have night vision and all other CCTV extras - it will be a more complicated and modern camera. The end result of the motion detection will activate this second camera. When somebody is moving in the area of the park, the low cost camera will detect him, then it will send 1 as a result and the second camera will be activated.

I thought it would be a good idea to share here some general ideas on my project, so that I can make it more clear to all readers and followers. If you have followed the blog so far, you probably know by now that I have observed one Edinburgh based park for a couple of weeks and I have made some conclusions on its usage and the ways it can be improved. As part of the observation, I had the chance to communicate with local residents and other people using the space, which made me realise that there is plenty of work which can be done for the park in order to make it more friendly and safe place for everyone. 

Based on my observation experience, I have created an idea for an interactive system, which can be implemented within the park. I have also created a design fiction of this intervention, and I'm currently in the process of developing a working prototype, based on my ideas. I'm using MAX/MSP for this technical part of the project. So, what is my intervention all about. Here is a summary of my idea:

1. The intervention is an interactive screen, which has different functions, meant to be used by the public while in the park.

2. It has the ability to greet people and provide them with useful information such as weather forecast, rules in the park, some warnings, current time, etc.

3. The screen has a motion detection sensor which gets activated when somebody enters the park premises. It works by using a camera which can record the person while in the park.

4. In an ideal situation, the screen is able to answer some questions and recognises different faces. If a person is a regular visitor, it is being greeted in a different way - the system acknowledges his return to this space.

5. The screen also has the capability of turning on or off the lights in the park. (At the current moment, there are no lights installed in the park)

I have spent the last few days figuring out how to make my software prototype work. I think that I'm having good progress on my main concept, but I'm not sure how I'll develop all of the features. So far, using MAX/MSP, I have made the following things:

1. The prototype reads data from my laptop camera and displays it as "live video"

2. The prototype generates a list of available devices and option to choose between them

3. Start and Stop access to the camera in form of buttons

4. Made a "Clear" button to clean the list of devices

It has been a while since I've posted something here. I just wanted to update you on my progress with the technical part of my project. I realised that I didn't give any details on the project I'm going to try and create with the help of Max/MSP... The idea is to create a prototype of an interactive screen for the park area I was observing for the first part of my module. The screen will have face detection and face recognition functions. It will also light up the park and make it nicer and safer place... Basically, my intervention in this public space will have the purpose of making the park more interesting and exciting, as well as safer and nicer for the people that use it.

Dealing with Max/MSP is quite challenging so far... but the good news is that I managed to deal with my licence issue and it is working properly now. I'm going to post some screenshots of my progress and my attempts in the next one-two days. Stay tuned!

This is my last day of observation. That's the reason why I will try to summarize my findings and to gather here all my thoughts about the responsiveness of the environment of the place I have been observing in the past three weeks.

Today the park was empty again because it was raining heavily. I was hoping for better weather but I guess I was not lucky enough to get it while my observation lasted. However, I can now share with you the main points of my observation:

1. Stenhouse Place East Park is a nice green space in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Even if you live there, there is a high possibility that you won't find it very easy. The access to it is not obvious and you may find it by accident. Actually, a few people walking by have told me that they didn't have any idea that there was park at this place.

2. The park is not very big, but it has green patches on both sides of its main pathway, which make it ideal for some outdoor activities. My observation showed that they are rarely used by people. On the other hand, a lot of dogs are being walked there.

3. The park has a major problem in terms of its cleanness. Dog fouling is part of this problem. People don't seem bothered by this and they keep on throwing things everywhere.

4. The park is most visited on sunny and warm days. I have seen most people in the time frame between 10:00 and 14:00.

5. The park has a nice playground area which is used mainly by parents and their children. There are two benches inside this area. I have seen children playing there on their own - it seems pretty safe area for them, because of the special material used on the ground and the fencing around the playground.

6. There are two litter bins at both entrances of the park, but there is still plenty of rubbish around them. There is also another additional bin inside the playground area, which is quite convenient for mothers and children using it. However, I have found a lot of objects inside of this area, too. I have gathered plenty of evidence that people don't use these bin a lot.

7. The council makes some effort to maintain this park to a good standard, but the grass looks a bit neglected - it has not been cut during my observation. However, the people living in the nearby houses have cut the bushes on their sides of the park, which has made it look better.

8. There is an informational sign on one of the entrances to the park, but the information there is not very interesting. It is a general information about the animals which usually live in Edinburgh parks. I am not convinced that this is necessary for a small park such as Stenhouse Place East.

9. The swings inside the playground area have been misused as far as my observation has shown. My guess is that this has been done by teenagers or grown up children, who are more likely to be able to play with them in a way which will make them unusable by other users.

10. All in all - the park offers a good place for the people living in the area to get some rest and do some outdoors activities on their own or with their families and pets. However, the park needs more work - new lights, more patrols to check for problems or fouling/littering, more work on the grass patches, trees and bushes. If people are more aware of the park's existence, I believe that they will use it more and they will care more about it. 

In the next few days I will make some greater effort to find people who are willing to be interviewed about the park, because I didn't have a lot of luck with this activity when I last tried to find such people.

My observational project has almost come to an end and I'm pretty sure there won't be a lot happening in those last few visits. Today the park was empty as usual. There was only two people walking by the park but that was it. I'm convinced that this is not because the park doesn't have anything to offer - I think that the bad weather has made it just a sad empty space in the last two-three weeks. I really hope that during the summer months there will be more people using it, more children playing in the playground and generally more life in it...

I'm a bit sad that parks like this one are not given proper attention. At least I can see that some council workers do some work there from time to time. It seems that the trees there have been planted recently and some of the bushes have been cut not long ago, too. I hope that more work will be done towards the cleanness of the park... but who knows?! We shall see... Another strange thing about this park is that there are no lights... I guess that it is very creepy at night... Oh, well...

It is the last day of March and the weather is pretty grim today. I went to the park to see if something exciting will happen but I was not surprised to figure out that there was nothing going on there. The only important thing I've manage to do is to find out what or who has damaged to green patch.

I've asked a person living in one of the houses near by and it appears that the black whole in the middle of the meadow was caused by some fireworks and rubbish put on fire there during Bonfire Night... I'm not surprised at all that people are capable of causing so much trouble only for their amusement. At least I know what is affecting this park the most - the people.

My only concern now is that no one wants to give me interview about this park...

It was Mother's day yesterday and I decided to pay a visit at the park. The weather was worse than before and I couldn't stay there for a long period this time. The park was empty as usual and I couldn't find many signs of usage at all... There was some rubbish in the playground area, but I guess that's normal... at least for this place. I'm going to see if something changes in the next few days.
