it must be said of all the things lionel did it was extremely swagful of him to kill his parents. actually on a deeper level i am kind of fascinated by this inherent way that essentially lionel will always be desperately in a way that reeks of fear trying to pretend as though he's what lex inherently is (born and raised with enormous unfathomable wealth) and it's such a jealous and a hatred and a sense of inferiority and also pride that i'm sure lionel feels when thinking about lex and that he's done that for lex. like lex doesn't have to kill his parents to escape poverty, lex is soft, lionel has done everything for lex -- he wants his son to be better than him and then is furious his son hasn't had to struggle the way he has and then i'm sure there are moments where lex, who is aware and capable of navigating through the wealthy world as easily as breathing, shames his father on accident. some mistake lionel isn't even away of making, or some reminder of the silly incorrect assumptions or ways lionel had once done something that is not "correct" in this wealthy society. interestingly this pretending at and never fully being able to achieve this thing lex has so effortlessly (born wealthy, born human) is something lionel and clark both have in common

rewatching insurgence and like. i know i already wrote thousands of words about this but it really is so clear that clark’s knee jerk reaction to explode when he’s upset without caring about the consequences was a learned trait. like he never had an example of a man in his life who didn’t react that way. it’s all he knows.
