maya paints all the sets, because she’s in AP studio art and she loves coming to set workdays and watching lucas build everything, she attends every performance and annoys everyone around her by singing along to all the songs

A Letter to Disney and GMW:

Look, we can all admit we’re a little biased about our ships on GMW. We live in a very different time than when BMW aired. We have Tumblr, online fan fiction, YouTube, Twitter to be able to express ourselves and fully form attachments to ships within TV shows, books, movies, and so on.

All I’m saying is, we need to let go for a second and realize that GMW may be the first Disney show in a long time to address issues that are important to the youth and those who are coming of age. Even issues for those who are already young adults, working with jobs and who strive to remember their childhood of BMW through GMW today.

Shows from “Old Disney” as I’d like to call it, were gems and treasured episodes. Even shows like Good Luck Charlie and Wizards of Waverly Place taught lessons and had sincere acting.

This is the issue I have with “New Disney.” We can’t have shows that address important social issues. We can’t have shows that dig too deep into the relationships of best friends figuring out who they want. We can’t have shows that treat the young kids, like adults and also as children, because I guess that’s “too deep” for today’s generation.

Instead, we have to feed young viewers shows like fucking Bunk’d and Bizaardvark that honest-to-God have nothing to do with the growth and character of the viewers they wish to influence.

I’m not hating on Bizaardvark (although when I watch clips for the show I actually cringe), all I’m saying is that I’m a college student and I haven’t watched Disney Channel since Good Luck Charlie ended because I’ve just been so disgusted by everything it’s become. I mean, for goodness sake, Rowan Blanchard isn’t even considered a proper Disney Channel ambassador because she addresses the issues that are though to swallow and that’s “unconventional” to a typical Disney spokesperson. And that is exactly why people like Miley Cyrus and Bella Thorne felt trapped by the Disney PR. GMW IS THE SHOW THAT BROUGHT ME BACK. And will continue to.

Look, Disney Channel. I’ve loved you since forever. You were the channel that inspired me and taught me very valuable lessons through your entertaining shows. You have shaped me into the open-minded, creative, and hopeful person I am today. However, your platform has definitely changed. And with that, understandably, it’s time to let go.

If you are unable to present certain topics, if you’re frightened of the “failed viewer count,” or if you simply believe your viewers are “incapable” of handling the issues presented in present and future GMW episodes, I suggest you politely move the show to Freeform, where it can be successful and have the liberation to address other issues.

I don’t want to blame the younger viewers of Disney. After all, it is a kids channel. However, I am disappointed. I want kids to watch GMW and any other Disney shows that truthfully address social issues like equality, feminism, relationships, self-worth, and bullying. But how is that possible when Disney will limit the knowledge and growth of a kid’s character, to the viewer count per week?
