Most of my friends have moved into college already (some have even started classes). How strange, then, to still have one week of internship and a vacation before I move in.
The scary thing about growing up, and about encountering life’s milestones, is that for a long time, these Significant Life Events felt like they were a lifetime away. They felt like the kinds of things that happened to other people, the kinds of things that I wouldn’t have to think about for a long time -- horizons I didn’t even preoccupy myself with reaching.
When you have to finally stand up and face the music, and accept that you are, indeed, passing these mile markers, it’s both scary and exciting. It’s both an adventure and a reminder -- a reminder that you are no longer the worry-free little kid you once were. A reminder that you are stepping onstage after years and years of comfortably waiting in the wings.
So I’m approaching this chunk of time with very mixed feelings. There’s a sense of curiosity, like I’m exploring a new place, experiencing all this vivid color with virgin eyes. But at the same time, I can’t help feeling a bit bereft, for the easy life, the well-worn comfort, the responsibility-free childhood I’m officially about to leave behind.
