Erics Lesson
We open our tale in the bedroom of Eric, he has a job he loves, he has a girlfriend who is already at her job. The pair intend to meet for drinks after Eric gets off work. He stretches, gets up and turns on the television and hears a familiar voice he looks over to the screen and sees his favorite muppet, Grover. 'Although I could be biased.' Eric thought with a smirk. He showered and went to work, things went well, but by the end of the day he was ready to see Janine, he hated when she worked night shifts. The pub wasn't very big, maybe eight tables, most at standing height, the lighting was dark, but there wasn't too much smoke which Eric appreciated. Janine waved at him from a table in the corner, she had already ordered a pair of beers and Eric allowed himself to smile as he made his way over to her. "Hey, how was work?" He asked. Janine gave a toothy smile and a little shrug. "Not bad, for the night shift. Your's?" She asked. Eric laughed. "Same as every other day." He replied. She nodded knowingly. "So it was the best." She said with a smile. Eric returned the smile, but he noticed the fixed nature of Janines, they had been together long enough for him to realize this wasn't heading anywhere good. "Well, we're both here now, that's what matters. What do you want to order for dinner?" Eric asked as he took a sip of his beer. Janines smile slipped from her face. "How long are we gonna do this, Eric?" She asked. Eric bit his lower lip. 'Yup, once more into the breach.' Eric thought to himself. "I don't know. Until, it's time to do something else, I guess." Eric replied. "Four years, isn't time for... Something else?" Janine asked. Eric tried to loosen the muscles in his neck, he knew what she meant, but he wasn't ready for marriage, he loved his life, his job, he loved the way things were. "We love each other. I love you. Isn't that enough for now?" Eric asked. Janine looked at the floor. "For now, but I don't know for how much longer. I'll see you at home." Janine said as she got up and left. Eric knew she meant what she said, but he still had to consider her leaving before dinner as a bad sign. 'Well, only one thing for it.' Eric thought. "Richie, three shots of your strongest." Eric said with a raised hand. 'Than three more, than we'll see where I'm at.' Eric thought. Four hours later Eric stumbled out of Richies onto the street, more than a little drunk, but not so drunk he didn't notice that it was broad daylight outside, or that the city had changed. It was beautiful here, the city seemed to stretch on as far as the eye could see, it had multiple levels, and colors, the buildings stood seemingly smiling at Eric in their solitude. Eric blinked hard, trying to get his eyes to focus on the wonders in front of him, he gave it up as a bad job and reached for his phone only to realize he was naked. He looked around panicked but there was no one in sight, much to Eric's relief. He looked at himself and realized all he was holding was a medallion with a 'G' on it, he shrugged and put the medallion on, a bright red cap appeared on his back and he immediately smiled as he felt the power flow through him, he guided himself into the air with a simple gesture and soured above the sparkling city. On and on he flew, skyscrapers, residential, mile after mile, no people, no life, just the illusion of life via an empty city, a shell, Eric felt a powerful wave of sadness as he thought this. 'There has to be someone.' He thought desperately, he flew faster around the city, widening his flight with each pass, finally he found something. He landed on the ground and saw a beautiful white unicorn, it's mane catching the light in such a way it seemed almost to glow. Eric was mesmerized by it. 'It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!' He thought. It turned it's head to look at him, and he saw the disappointment in it's eyes. He reached out to comfort it, but his arm wasn't his own, it was short and blue and furry, now that he thought about it he could see the curvature of his own red nose. 'What is going on?' Eric asked as he rushed over to the nearby lake to view his own reflection, but his reflection was that of Supergrover. A sudden splash of water on his face forced him to close and open his eyes quickly, he was back in the bar, and human, Richie had taken him into the back to sober him up. "Are you alright?" Richie asked. Eric shook his head vigorously, trying both to forget and remember his dream. "I... I think, I just dreamed something... Something, important." Eric said. "What?" Richie asked. "Where was an empty city, a beautiful unicorn, and..." Eric said catching himself before revealing his own form in the dream. "I think that was it." Eric finished weakly. Richie nodded, perhaps a little too knowingly. "You'll work it out." Richie said. Eric nodded, he didn't consciously know what his dream meant, but he knew what it made him want. A week to the day passed and that morning Eric turned on the TV to PBS, Sesame street was on, he smiled to himself. Janine came into the living room and turned off the TV before setting in Eric's lap, the pair kissed. "Your going to be late for work." She reminded him as she got up to change, Eric smiled and nodded. He got ready himself and the pair parted, Eric made his way to the PBS back lots, checked in, and made his way to the set of Sesame Street and retrieved the Grover muppet, he looked around to make sure he was alone and reached into the muppet and retrieved a small black case, he smiled. 'I'll ask her tonight over dinner.' Eric thought as he placed the ring case in his hip pocket, it was time to shoot another episode right now and he, Grover, had a line. The End.
