Cloud & Barret VS Scorpion Sentinel = 140+ lines of dialogue‼ (📎transcript, EN+JA)
Did you notice how much banter there is during the first boss battle (Scorpion Sentinel) of Final Fantasy VII Remake? It's actually more complex than you might think! While compiling the Japanese transcript (for private use) and matching it against the English one on the fandom wiki[1], I found more lines each time I viewed the battle!
Check them all out in my master list (Google Sheets)!
After playing/watching this battle (ad nauseum)a LOT[2], I have found a whopping total of 134 lines in English and 147 in Japanese, and that is still not all! FROM A SINGLE EVENT IN THE GAME!! The amount of dialogue in this game overall is actually quite insane (and I might be a little insane to try to find all of it (6.6)).
I made a dumb… advertisement?
So I should act like everyone around me is Sephiroth, able and willing to run me through with a very sharp thing if I get too close? I can live with that. ԅ(¯﹃¯ԅ)
2020 = FFVII Remake (+ time to improve my nerd skillz)
If 2020 has been a terrible year for the world, one good thing it has brought is the escapist fantasy of Final Fantasy VII Remake. After burrowing deeper and deeper into the game, the compilation, and everything around it, I can say I am well and truly hooked, and when I get hooked... I get obsessed with cataloguing and analysing everything.
Being the spreadsheet-crazed little fandom ferret I am, I couldn’t help taking the info on various gaming sites and customizing the hell out of it. While I’ve lately focused on the script and music, my first creation was actually a tool for tracking the use of skill points (SP) on different weapons. I hated having to switch back and forth between weapons to remember what upgrades I had added where, as only the instant stat boosts and materia slots can be easily tracked when you switch between weapons.
Oh well, I never actually finished adding all weapon abilities, but it was helpful just having Cloud’s setup. I want to share the moment of “Squee!” I had when I finally got a formula for adding/connecting materia slots to work! It was a whole different ballgame than just summing up the stat boosts. The gif tells it best!
That first time you heard his voice in the new game... *shivers*
↑ English (Tyler Hoechlin) ↓ Japanese (Toshiyuki Morikawa)

His voice sounds remarkably similar in the original and the dub, and I love them both. There have been protests against the decision to replace George Newbern in the dub, but I don’t mind at all. As Sephiroth’s dialogues have been analysed and re-translated many times already, I might not bother. (I have a million other things lined up.) Still, the focus on Sephiroth is very logical, as his lines are about 50 % plot/mystery, 50 % manipulation/taunting, and 100 % awesomeness - yes, that makes perfect sense!
