A pang of weakness struck him the moment their lips met, a desperation, a hunger, the like of which Luca had only ever tried to capture on film. His hands gripped the tops of Maverickâs arms at first, as if he was afraid he might crumble into ash and dust if he let go, no doubt leaving marks when his fingertips finally departed. One hand came to brush the side of Maverickâs face, the other slipped down and settled at his hip. When the younger man broke the kiss, a  barely inaudible plea sounded at the back of his throat. He felt raw. The ache of longing unleashed by their nearness stripped through him, reaching his fingertips, and pricking his spine. It was like waking up from a coma, and feeling all of his nerve endings come alive, all of the parts of him that had gone unused and neglected forced to breathe in, forced to come to life.Â
Dark eyes closed if only for a moment, his lips still parted, his lungs devouring air. He was thankful when he felt Maverickâs forehead against his own, and opened his eyes to see a familiar countenance, but suddenly in a new way. His hand cosseted the plane of his cheek a second longer, then stole through the unkempt black hair at the nape of his neck.Â
Sono spaventato. Fear was something Luca had overcome a long time ago. When he was confronted with things he didnât understand, instead of cowering, he either challenged them, or met them headfirst. If his head hadnât been swimming from the sudden aftermath of his actions, he might have laughed, then, as it was exactly what he was doing right now. He hadnât understood his feelings for Maverick, and they had made themselves known immediately since their reintroduction. What had once been an almost familial or brotherly sort of connection had changed. Luca suddenly found himself noticing the length of Maverickâs throat, his slender fingers, the almost gray tone to this hazel eyes. The urge to protect him remained, but it was altogether different, too.Â
His thumb ran along the space beneath a bruised bottom lip, his eyes somehow far away and focused at once. âNon ho mai fatto male di nuovo.â The promise came from a broken place inside him. The empire he had wrought of steel and marble walls, of impenetrable fences and guard walls that stabbed the sky â they no longer reigned. At least not in the moment, when Maverick ambled easily through the gates, distracting his mind from its usual imprisonment. âIo non ti merito,â he whispered, his fingers slipping beneath the hem of Maverickâs shirt as the man pushed off the wall to get closer to him, to take his lips again. The truth was difficult to voice, and he went weak the moment after, allowing his form to be tugged back into place. He fell easily there, as if his body knew where it belonged. Junctures and sharp curves of bone yielding and lurching to complement their opposite; how well they fit together.A hand braced itself against the brick wall, as another bravely touched the concavity near Maverickâs hip bone. He kissed him back as if he would never be allowed another chance, as if this would be the last time he would be allowed to get this close.
The words only reminded Maverick that Luca was â hopefully â a man of his word. There was little left for Maverick to hold onto when it came to this. This completely broken territory that heâd wandered through so many times; he felt like he was destined to stay fumbling around in the dark despite the fact that he fundamentally needed someone. His admission hadnât scared Luca off, and hadnât even pulled a laugh almost like heâd expected. His fear was valid, and he was sure that if he looked hard enough, he could see it reflected in Lucaâs own gaze as well.Â
He idly wondered why Lucaâs opinions had already settled into Maverickâs very being. His words meant everything, and he could most likely blame it on the connection heâd had with the other for years, ever since he could first remember. Maverick huffed out the breath he was holding, âPromettere?â Promise? Maverick could remember asking Luca to promise almost everything. From picking him up from school to climbing up to their favorite balcony to do nothing more than sit, Maverick had asked the same small question. It was his way of ensuring it all, since he could always count on Lucaâs promises.
âCerto che sĂŹ,â Maverick argued, taking whatever moment he could to get his own point across. It was difficult for him to do, considering how distracted he was with the feel of Lucaâs hands on his skin. Heâd been told time and time again what was thought of him. Whore. Desperate. His anxiety constantly drove his own pity train through his mind, but he refused to let it take hold of him in that moment. There was more to him than that, and he had to remind himself of his best friendâs words. He deserved happiness, and Luca was a part of that.Â
The want drowned any other words Maverick had on his tongue. His body was molded against the otherâs, and it didnât seem like they were going to go anywhere anytime soon. The last thing Maverick wanted to do was move too fast for Luca, but he needed to know some kind of boundary before he made a mistake, âLuca,â he breathed, his words mumbled against the otherâs lips before he pressed another kiss against them, âVoglio che tutto quello che ti danno me.â
