Nick hat nie darüber nachgedacht, ob er sich mal outet. Es kommt ihm nicht wie eine realistische Option vor und es ist so einfach, Silas in der Öffentlichkeit als seinen besten Freund zu bezeichnen. Doch irgendwann ändert sich das.

Silas ist unglücklich in seinen besten Freund verliebt, doch Nick bekommt von nichts etwas mit, bis bei der WM auf einmal alles anders ist.

Nick ist frustriert, dass er noch immer kein WM-Spiel machen durfte, aber zum Glück weiß Silas, wie er ihn aufmuntern kann.

Q: You moved to Newcastle last summer with a childhood friend. How well is the men's shared household working out?

Nick: Very well. That said, my parents do lend us a hand from time to time. When they were in Newcastle recently, they cleaned the whole house. They are very tidy people—almost obsessed with cleanliness at their home in Bremen. I’m a bit more laid-back about that.

Q: How do you spend your time when you aren't playing football?

Nick: I’ve taken up golf and play basketball a lot. I got a hoop for the patio.

Q: Basketball is a team sport. How does that work when you’re on your own or just with one other person?

Nick: We have visitors over often. I like having company when I get home from training around 4 p.m. When you’re alone, it’s easy to get too caught up in your own head. I feel more at ease when I’m around people. Actually, there are usually some buddies around.

Q: So, do you celebrate "guys' nights" by playing video games?

Q: You’re only 23, and Newcastle United is your first stint abroad. Who came with you to England?

Nick: My friend Silas lives with me. We’ve known each other since our school days and played together in the Werder Bremen youth teams. And since neither of us has a girlfriend at the moment, we said: Let’s share a place in Newcastle. Silas helps me out with day-to-day things, which takes a huge load off my shoulders.

Q: Is dinner on the table when you get home from training?

Nick: Sometimes we heat something up, and every now and then a chef comes by to help us improve. Neither Silas nor I are exactly culinary wizards.

Q: Do your parents ever come to check on you?
