ASD(Autism Spectrum Disorder), is a condition that includes problems with communication and behavior. Just like what my son had experienced and still experiencing today although there’s a great improvement as he undergone speech and occupational therapies years ago. Yes, I am mother of a kid diagnosed of having a “mild autism”. He was 7 years old when we found out. And every time I remembered way back then when people said “Ang likot naman ng batang ‘yan, super hyper”. Ganyan ba talaga yan kahit sa bahay nyu?”, Bakit ganun, hindi pa sya nakakaimik ng diretso? Bakit wala syang focus? Bakit palagi syang nag tatantrums? Ano ba yan? Siguro napabayaan yang batang yan. Pinabayaan mag laro ng gadget araw araw kaya nagkaganyan. Siguro hindi palagi kinakausap. Siguro palagi lang nasa harap ng TV, wala sigurong kalaro.” Those are things na palagi kong naririnig noon before he got diagnosed. Masakit bilang Nanay na parang na judge ka na, although hindi naman nila alam ang buong kwento. Yes, maaaring may pagkukulang sa part ko. Pero God knows, lahat ginawa at gagawin ko para sa anak ko. When we went to the doctor she explained to me that Autism usually runs in families, so certain combinations of genes may increased the child’s risk of having this kind of condition. So, she told me that, never blame myself. All I have to do is to accept and find ways to treat him. So, as I have said earlier, he undergone sessions of behavioral and speech therapies and it helped him a lot. Now my son is still dealing with his condition but I can say that he has a great improvement. And as a Mom, I am always here for him, fighting for him by any means. I want him to have a normal life just like any other kid. I know there is no cure, but some sort of treatment can make a big difference in development, and I will hold on to that. I just hope people would be more sensitive in making judgments. Yes, they’re just relying on their observations. But we should think first before giving statement or opinion because it may hurt other’s feelings. And we don’t know what might be that person being judged, is going through in life.
