October 1st is National Black Dog Day. Thousands of best friends are passed over in shelters every day simply because of their black fur, most likely because of - no joke - superstition. Just like our feline friends. @maggiemcelhannon was adopted when she was 7 weeks. She’ll be 11 years old in January, and I can’t imagine what I’d do without her waking me up every single morning with a snort and a wag. I love superheroes. I love dogs. And I’ve always been particularly fond of Krypto. I had lunch with @merrill_hagan a few weeks ago and he was wearing a shirt just like this and all I could do was stare at it. So I got one. @verrsachi saw it and said it was the perfect shirt for me and I agree. Today my best friend in the entire world, Maggie, is 10 years old. I didn’t have a dog for probably 20 years before her, and I was very hesitant the day we met. Now I can’t imagine a day without her. She’s my alarm clock, and my reason to get moving and stretch my legs first thing in the morning. She’s the supervisor that gives a gentle snort or tap of her paw reminding me it’s time for a snack or a scratch behind the ears. She’s the silly goof with the uncanny ability to know exactly when I need a good chuckle the most. Maggie was only seven weeks old on our Gotcha Day, St. Patrick’s Day 2009, and I’ve called her my “Lucky Dog” ever since. But I think we all know who the lucky one really is. Happy Birthday, Maggie.
