Sometimes you have to make your own references. I've been trying to come up with my own design for a tortle face for a while, but for some reason I could never keep their head shape in focus enough to draw it at any angle. Well, problem solved!

Abandoning this one here. I've been doing nothing but photo studies again, for all the right reasons, (and a couple wrong ones) and they're finally starting to pay off. I'm a hair's breadth away from a defined personal style. Consistency is imminent!
Got a little more heavy handed on this one (got bored, I guess).
Another stop on the study train. Faces have been the most difficult thing for me (besides backgrounds and environments) so I'm on a mission to bang this stuff into my brain.
Okay, one more.

Sunday morning face studies!
May my love for this band never die. #thekills
I'm not much for taking selfies anymore. I had to remember my MySpace angles, lol. But the boots are what's important here.
Art Space v1.5.
My Surface Pro literally caught fire (managed to salvage the ssd!) so I had to upgrade to a Mac Mini about a year ahead of plan. (I'm only crying financially, otherwise, it's a damn wonder.)
Picked up the MSI Optix G32 curved monitor yesterday for $20 and an MXL condenser mic. When Facebook Marketplace works out, it really works out.
The right side screen is my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 running in Sidecar. It's the most consistent use it's gotten since I bought my 2022 pro, and I love it.
I think the only thing I need now is a proper keyboard and mouse. I'm using a cheap JLab set right now, and it's a goddamn mess. I have to constantly wait for the to 'wake up' before they'll do anything. I'll be having an Office Space moment the instant I can replace them.
My cozy, dedicated art space is coming together!

Alrighty, I'm calling this one here. I'm just worrying it like a dog toy, now. I still have a long way to go when it comes to rendering. Plus, now that I have my Kamvas tablet, I'm learning an entirely new software (Krita), so my art time is going to be dedicated to that for the foreseeable future.
Upgrade! 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 to Huion Kamvas 22. Let's go.
Now I just have to learn Krita...
Damnit. I have such a proclivity for overcomplicating things, especially when it comes to rendering. My goal, above anything else, is to make a comic. (Multiple comics, gods willing.) So, I need a style that can be done with reasonable speed, yet still be pleasing to my eye. I think I'm getting closer with this, using a couple of multiply layers and an overlay or add layer over color flats for light value. (The white layer here is just so I can see everything I'm doing.)
This is a mid-process of a DnD character I'd like to play, using this technique. I'm seeing a lot of my western comics upbringing in both of these. Especially the second one, I feel a little like I'm channeling John Romita Jr with that face. I like it. My hope for an art style has always had a mix of western comics, art nouveau and Disney, lol.
For the first time in almost three years, I feel addicted to doing this. Ups and downs are constant, but this particular up is an entirely different animal. I haven't felt this way since my incomplete Bells Hells run in 22.
Instead of color blocking, I decided to block in color value, instead. Not entirely sure why, but it would be easy enough to drop colors into place later. ( Soooo many layers) It's not complete, but what's left will be easier once I'm doing light values (my favorite). I'm also gonna need to redraw the sashes. They're FAR too perfectly straight.
Off to try and finish Fjord and Molly!

Okay, background lines are pretty much done. Added a couple more kitties. I'm gonna lay down color blocking and try to finish the Fjord and Molly piece before reworking Caleb and Essek.
I'm sure some folks remember this thing. I got this far on it before my horrible, awful sense of perspective killed it finally. I'm bad at perspective. There's no sugar coating that, but, after enough time passed I was able to get the fire started again. So:
Thank the gods for Procreate's drawing guide! This went much faster thanks to already having the original pic. Cozy Shadowgast is happening!
Holy crap. This is so tedious and frustrating, but I'll be damned if it isn't satisfying!
