A sublimating chamber of sulphur in Sicily #natgeo In the last years of the nineteenth century the sulfur demand of any kind was very strong and pushed entrepreneurs who installed in refineries machinery for sublimation, for the milling and ventilation. The first major sort of refinery was implanted in Catania (Sicily) with equipment and methods similar to ones of transalpine refineries. The Sublimation process. In this production, retorts are used similar to those of the refining furnaces. The vapors coming out of the retorts, however, are placed in large brickwork rooms where for the abrupt cooling pass in the solid state in the form of fine powder. The granules which are collected within the sublimation chamber (flowers of sulfur) are varied in thickness depending on the proximity of the entrance duct leading inside the vapors. The size of the rooms was on average m. 15x7 above and m. 9,50 in height. In the period of operation of the oven - a week - the room remained sealed. In the vault were located two valves with relative fireplaces that went beyond the roofs for the emission of any combustion products caused by air infiltration. The production was about 12-15 tonnes per week. The collection of sublimed sulfur product was done once a week and followed from storage of the product divided according to the granulometry.
