Knob-billed duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos)

The knob-billed duck is an unusual, pan-tropical duck, found in tropical wetlands in sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and south Asia from Pakistan to Laos and extreme southern China. It also occurs in continental South America south to the Paraguay River region in eastern Paraguay, southeastern Brazil and the extreme northeast of Argentina, and as a vagrant on Trinidad. The male is much larger than the female, and has a large black knob on the bill. There are two subspecies,in fact, some taxonomists consider them to be distinct species. This duck feeds on vegetation by grazing or dabbling and to a lesser extent on small fish, invertebrates, and seeds. It breeds in still freshwater swamps and lakes in the tropics. It is largely resident, apart from dispersion in the wet season.
