Just a quick rant about weird trends on the internet.

A lot of websites seem to get really popular, simply by using a system where users can submit content. The problem with these sites, is that a problematically large portion of my friends actually link me to very questionable websites, just to show me an embedded YouTube video, or imgur image. Personally I've made a habbit of always deep linking content, because I don't see why a site like "funnyjunk" should get a hit from me, simply because a user submitted a funny YT video or imgur image to their website. On top of that there are of course all the copyright issues, where users upload webcomics to the site, and a lot of people actually never visit the actual webcomic, they just watch compressed, smaller resolution versions on some ad plastered website.

I suppose these kinds of sites are neat for people who just want some entertainment, and don't care much for where it comes from. A friend of mine recently reflected on how this trend on the internet is actually ruining people. This service of constant simple entertainment (and let's face it, 9gag/funnyjunk/whatever is not very deep, but some people still spend hours on it each day) changes how people perceive entertainment and the commitment it usually takes, to get entertained properly. All we're looking for, is a way to get rewarded. It's infinitely more rewarding to read a good book or watch a good movie, but instead people just resort to a steady flow of 4 panel comics and photos of conversations on facebook.
