As a child, James Buchanan Barnes lost his parents (his father dying while in the US army, his mother’s COD is unknown to him) and was sent to a small orphanage in Brooklyn. When he was a boy at the orphanage, he saw a scrawny little kid being beaten up by a group of bullies and, after stepping in to save the boy, made a life-long friend. Since that day, Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers were almost inseparable.
They were together when they learned of America joining the Second World War, and together they made the decision to join the army. He trained Steve for a short time before visiting a US recruiting centre; while he was accepted into the army, Steve was not, and so they parted for a short time.
Time passed and Private James Buchanan Barnes rose through the ranks to become Sergeant. He was eventually captured alongside his men by the Germans at Azzano. As a POW (Prisoner Of War), he was taken to a HYDRA facility in the Austrian Alps, where he met other allies who were also being forced to work; after finishing work on the Valkyrie, he was sent to an isolation clinic for those who were too ill or weak to work, and it was here that Captain America found and rescued him after the infiltration of the facility.
After recovering, Bucky and other skilled fighters joined the Steve Rogers in an active fight against the Nazis, which became known as the Howling Commandos, however, after a number of months and successful operations, Bucky fell to HYDRA aboard one of their trains; he fell to what was assumed his death, and declared deceased although no body was found.
Though no body was discovered by the allied forces, Vasily Karpov - a Russian General - salvaged his body and revived him. When Bucky awoke, he had no recollection of his past. Karpov used this opportunity to reprogram Bucky to be a Soviet Russian assassin under the name of the Winter Soldier; however, his memory implants caused mental instability, leading to serious risks taken by those who kept him under their thumb.
The Winter Soldier was a ghost; a skilled assassin who has eradicated a number of high-profile threats to those opposing HYDRA and their allies; his targets ranged among political figures and citizens with special abilities. He had no recollection of his past, nor did he recall who Captain America was, only ever having focused on the missions he was assigned under the command of his officers.
