** beneath the cut is a small summary of each member of the toma family, excluding liliana.
πππππ ππππ - liliana's maternal grandfather, alive, 65: matei keeps to himself these days, however, will often be seen seated besides liliana's floral arranging table in the shop with half moon spectacles balanced on the tip of his nose reading books on flower meanings. he shares his knowledge with his granddaughter.
πππ ππππ π§ππΜ π ππππππ - liliana's maternal grandmother, alive, 63: ana has flourished in london, making many friends within the baking community. though she has started to struggle with her mobility, ana continues to make visits to her best friend's bakery down the road from the florist. she teaches lulia and liliana to cook at the end of each day, hoping to expand their knowledge to support themselves.
πππππππ ππππ - liliana's biological father, estranged, 47: gabriel has no knowledge of liliana's whereabouts in england and it is unknown as to where he is now or what he is doing.
πππππ ππππ π§ππΜ ππππ - liliana's biological mother, deceased, would be 42 but died at 38: magda was a sweet, but naive woman who was loyal to her husband's schemes until her death. liliana decides to remember her mother as an angel, a woman with the voice of one and the demeanour of one. her mother was a good person and she would always remember her that way.
πππππ ππππ - liliana's half-sister, alive, 4: unbeknowst to the entire family, lulia was not conceived through magda and gabriel as they had not been intimate in years upon lulia's birth, instead she is the product of one of gabriel's contract pay ups where magda was kept from dawn until dusk the following day. lulia looks the spitting image of liliana and magda, so her true lineage is lost to the winds. she enjoys singing and will sing songs that matei and ana have taught her from romania, as well as sharing these songs with liliana's customers.
manicured nails flip the sign on the shop's entrance to announce it's opening for the day, carefully adjusting the pink and golden welcome to sit perfect within the window of the front door. reaching up, liliana flicks the bell to ensure maximum ringing was available for her customers today - she had a good feeling about today, perhaps it was because lulia had woken her with a sweet song of their homeland. patting down her skirts, the florist took a moment to admire the turquoise silk embroidered with silver and pink lillies along the edges - a gift from one of her customers - looking at her, one would never believe her to be simply a commoner.
the scent of fresh flowers fills the shop as liliana inspects each one of her blooms, collecting the ones that have become weak, wilting or simply faded. if she is to appear the best and become a supplier for the ton, she must show perfection. elegance. success.
"bunΔ dimineaΕ£a," her mother tongue escapes her lips as the bell rings above the door, quickly discarding of the bad flowers in the small back room hidden by a velvet curtain. "good morning, i mean," her accent is thick as she looks to her customer, a charming smile brightening her features as a twinkle shines in her eyes. "are you perhaps seeking a bloom to convey a message to someone or simply to decorate one's home?"
Brookβs Club was alive with gentlemen discussing politics and the latest scandals, most of which was the state of the royal family and how their finances would be affected, but Nalan was more thankful that his family business was separate from such things. If taxes were raised, it would be a hindrance but the business would survive it, especially if they reduced business to the very modiste mentioned in Lady Whistledown. Nalan wanted his alone time, to have a comfy chair, Lady Whistledown and a glass of the finest claret, it would have been a dream had Nalan not read that JunHo Lytton was now a lord, an American of all people and one such as the Lyttonβs did not deserve what Nalan desired!
Re-reading it not once or twice, but three times, did Nalan no favours, it was as if Nalan was trying to understand the absurdity and yet Nalan remained both angry and confused at this news, knowing how insufferable they would all be, and there would be no blame. If Nalan were to get his own title, the whole of London would hear him screaming it from the rooftops.
βA viscount and yet the man is as capable as a fish out of water, but I suppose money would get what most desired!β
There was nothing but angry mumbling from Nalan, something only made worse when another passing by had clipped the edge of Nalanβs table, tipping his glass and watching as the claret cascaded across Nalanβs copy of Lady Whistledown and all Nalan could do is watch, watch at how even the claret avoided spoiling JunHoβs name.
βI assume your apologies will be forthcoming very soon, but first you can explain why you are in such a rush that you have ruined a perfectly good glass!β
some things she wished she had left in romania, some part of her cried each time she portrayed the loose woman - the woman who would do anything if it meant she could provide for her own family. the gentleman in question had little time to find for liliana's companionship, so the suggestion of a sneaky rendevouz in a back room of a gentleman's club was her only choice. a fate decided for her when she sought the contract to supply for the gentleman's household, flowers that would forever be perfect and become the envy of the ton - his wife would be so happy and none the wiser.
it sickened her.
the signed contract is slipped between her breasts by slimy hands, whiskey breath caressing her cheek and attacking her senses. the transaction was over, she had to get out of the club before she was found out. for her family.
a clock is pulled tight around her body as she slips away from the man, proud of his own achievement to reach enlightenment within seconds, the person she was with him left behind in the shadows of the backroom. liliana steps carefully through the men in the main room, listening in to the gossip and words being spread amongst the crowd.
"la dracu!" in her rush, she had not paid attention to the small tables or chairs and had caused one to wobble, spilling a perfectly good glass of claret. she could run, ignore the man's words and escape with a little bit of her pride in tact - but there were too many men here. too many people to talk. her voice is hushed, looking to the man from beneath the cloak that protected her: "i'm afraid i lack a few assets to be approved of this company, so if you will excuse me."
Junho is sitting on one of the many benches in Hyde Park. His head was leaning against the back of the bench. He just looked up at the bright blue sky above him. He keeps replaying the image of being named lord....He had no idea what it meant to be a lord in the first place....There were a lot of thoughts- He had thought if he became a lord, he'd have a partner and their family at his side to help him...yet he's all alone in this. His family has never been titled!
Who does he even ask for help?
Tobias Throne? He doesn't want to be lord, but maybe a little helpful...maybe he'd distract him more than being helpfulβ¦Dominic O'Connor, but he's a little nervous to ask. He felt like he was far more interested in matching him than anything else about himβ¦
There was that pretty blonde who had offered to help him. He was a member of Parliament, wasn't he? He doesnβt actually know his name...which felt like a problem...
He groans out loud as he throws his arms over his closed eyes. He had brought a book to read, but he didn't even feel like reading-
He doesn't even notice another sitting next to him. Isn't it strange? Heβs always aware of people around him. Always eager to be social. Junho is all smiles and relaxed shoulders. Β Who would be so eager to talk to another- or he'd have his nose to the book? He finally noticed the other person, he looked over, and he looked surprised. βOh, Iβm sorry, I didnβt notice you.β
a breath of fresh air was sometimes needed when surrounded in thick floral scents - though she did love her shop, the mix of lillies and roses were causing her stomach to turn a little too much. her hand is held tightly by lulia, her whole hand curled around two of liliana's fingers as she steps slowly to keep from rushing her baby sister; some passersby had commented on the beauty of her daughter and lily had simply agreed - how can one explain the tragedy of their past? how could she explain the world to them when her own sister understood nothing of the life they live?
liliana led lulia for a moment of respite, a sit down on the nearest bench - though the man did not deter her, no man could deter her appearance these days. they did not scare her as a lone woman. not anymore.
the moment the man groans, liliana looks at him with a raised brow - lulia leans against her older sister and mimics the expression almost perfectly, if a little exaggerated.
"do you need assistance, sir?" she liked not being noticed in that moment, she was invisble to this stranger for a second and it felt freeing. "you don't look all too well."

her childhood was spent on the streets of sibiu, dark hair braided tightly to her skull and feet bare as she manouvered through crowded markets - whilst she envied the children escorted by a governess, she enjoyed the feeling of the breeze passing her like a whippet more. her father ran the toma's petals in the market square of sibiu, a quaint florist with colourful blooms overarching the doorways and windows, with ivy crawling along chipped bricks. it was a fairytale looking home. her father was a businessman through and through, a greasy smile and charm coming out of his ears - he could sell a withering dandelion to the most prestigious man of romania and face no consequences. he was a lecher. a villian.
liliana believed the business to be a successful one because of the flowers they produced, because of the bouquets her and her mother would formulise in the backroom of the shop, but at fourteen she discovered the truth. whilst her father had never been her favourite - he had beaten her, burned her, ridiculed her - she never could believe he would go as far as whoring out her mother for higher paying contracts. it sickened liliana and she tried to run from her home more than once. each time brought a new scar to her back and had her mother in tears.
her mother had lily's younger sister when lily was eighteen, and no matter the effort put in by lily and the other women present, her mother gave up. she passed and left vulnerable girls with a man who cared only for the money that lined his pockets. it took two months before liliana was takinng over her mother's role as the cash cow, the lady on display, the prize of toma. it sickened her, but she saw the eyes of a sweet child, a little girl who hasn't seen the horror of the world yet. she would protect her sister.
liliana began to save a coin here and there, a small amount that wouldn't show to her father, and hide them where her father would never look - in her mother's empty jewellery box. her father believed she had seen the light when she began taking more jobs, but instead it was so she could earn more and more money to escape.
at twenty, in the dead of night, she sought out her elderly grandparents on the edge of sibiu - her mother's parents who had not seen liliana since she was ten and never met their youngest granddaughter - pleading for them to join them, to escape as a family from the clutches of that manipulative man. so they did.
england wasn't their first port of call, but it became a permenant placement after liliana had been gifted the deed to a shop and flat above from a generous beneficiary back home with connections to london.
the toma family has now been in london for almost two years and liliana hopes to become a floral supplier to the ton.
by any means necessary.
