my planet or yours?

In the show, we really don’t get to see a lot of them together post-Lazarus experiment—apart from 42 (an episode that feeds into my point). Besides that, we get nearly three months of Martha with John Smith, then a tiny peek of Ten and Martha in 1969 (where they spent weeks living together), and then we get about two days with them in Utopia/The Sound of Drums before they’re apart for an entire year.

… But S3 also got 12+ novels, an animated miniseries, tons of comics, and a MySpace blog—all of which take place post-Lazarus Experiment. There is so, so much we didn’t get to see in the show! It’s delved into pretty heavily in the EU.

The novels in particular spend very little time alluding to Ten’s grief and Martha’s yearning/jealousy—whereas the show makes those things the primary focus. In the books/etc, we just get them being great mates, solving mysteries, suffering traumas, saving each other, hurt/comfort, et cetera. It’s everything the show skimped on during S3. It’s a proper friendship, but with natural complexities. With NUANCE

I know people are pretty heavily dug in on the popular takes, and creating this account has only shown me that I’m in a pretty lonely minority with my opinions of that series/these characters. 😅 But god— I genuinely think The Pirate Loop, Peacemaker, and Martha’s MySpace blog should be required reading for all Nu-Whovians. Completely leveled and rebuilt my opinion of S3 on the whole+made me appreciate Ten and Martha’s relationship more than ever.
