1. Circuit
A circuit is a complete, closed path through which electric current flows from a power source to a load and back. In electrical installation, the creation of a circuit involves connecting components like wiring, switches, and outlets so that electricity can power devices. A proper circuit is essential for any device to function.
2. Voltage (V)
Often described as "electrical pressure," voltage is the potential difference between two points in a circuit. It is the force that pushes electrons and drives the electric current. For example, household wiring typically operates at 120 or 240 volts in North America, while smaller devices like those using batteries operate at a lower voltage.
3. Current (A)
Current is the flow rate of electric charge through a conductor, such as a wire. It is measured in amperes (amps) and can be compared to the flow of water in a pipe. In electrical installation and maintenance, managing current is crucial to prevent overheating, which is often done with protective devices like circuit breakers or fuses.
4. Conductor
A conductor is a material that allows electricity to flow through it easily. In electrical work, conductors are most often copper or aluminum wires. The primary job of installation is to properly route these conductors through a building to deliver power. Conductors must be correctly sized for their intended load to prevent overheating and fire hazards.
5. Conduit
A conduit is a durable, protective tube, typically made of steel or plastic, that encloses electrical wiring. Electricians install conduit to protect wires from physical damage, moisture, and corrosion, and to hide them from view. It is particularly important in commercial and industrial settings, as well as in areas where wiring may be exposed to the elements.
