“But I look terrible in orange. What idiot tries to do a Wronski Feint without practicing anyway, even I’m not that stupid.” He said looking back up to Marlene pouting. “I guess it’ll make Gideon and Fabian happy, at least we’ll be able to go to games together.”
“Everyone looks terrible in orange,” she snorted. Marlene leaned back in her chair and kicked her feet up on the table. The phone lay in her lap, forgotten for the moment as she laughed. “As least someone will be happy,” she agreed, shaking her head. “What do you think the Canons’ chances are of actually making it to the finals this year?”
Bringing Up Memories || Gideon & Marlene
Gideon smiled and held her hand as they went through the picture album and nodded. “We were incredibly horrible to him, but he’s payed me back for that, it’s not like we’ve never suffered from his pranks?” He smiled and wiped his eyes. “But I do remember that, he looked so scared that he wasn’t going to be able to go, but then Molly found his letter and I got hit up the head and Fabian was able to hit me to.” He pouts.
He went through the next page and smiled, “What about this one? It was our first train ride to Hogwarts. Can you believe that was already seven years ago? It’s ridiculous… It can’t have been that long, seven years…” He muttered.
Marlene leaned into Gideon more, letting him support her weight as she looked down at the book. Thousands of memories flooded at the sight of the pictures, some she hadn’t thought of in years. Lightly, she brushed her fingers over the one that Gideon had stopped at. The young girl had one arm hooked through Gideon’s, and one through James’. They’d been her two best mates since they were all in diapers.
Marlene squeezed Gideon’s hand. “Seven years,” she repeatedly faintly. It couldn’t possibly have gone by that fast. “We’ll be leaving soon,” she sighed, resting her head on his shoulder and closing her eyes. The finality of their tenure at Hogwarts had suddenly struck her, and she was afraid. War was being raged outside the safety of the school, and Marlene wasn’t ready to face it. She took a deep breath and held it before it finally shuddered out of her. “What will we do?” she asked quietly, desperately.
High in the Sky || Frank and Marlene
Frank stretched his tired arms and legs, then closed his eyes as the breeze offered him some brief relief from his soreness. He and Marlene lay there on the pitch as the rest of the team dragged their tired bodies off of the field, James sprinting in front of them.
He’d almost fallen asleep when an excellent idea came to him. “I have some herb up in my room. Want to get a bit silly?” Frank turned his head to Marlene, a mad grin spread across his face. He pinched his fingers together and raised an imaginary joint to his lips before mimicking a deep inhale. “We can eat all of James’s chocolates when we’re done, that should piss him off.” Frank chuckled and gave Marlene a poke in the side for good measure.
Marlene weaved her fingers in and out of the grass beneath her palms. Clouds drifted lazily overhead, puffy and incredibly serene against the brilliant blue of the sky. Her body relaxed a bit, the tension draining out of her, sucked away by the earth below her. She turned her head when Frank spoke and smiled lazily at him. “Excellent idea, mate,” she replied.
Batting Frank’s hand aside, she nimbly jumped up, hiding the way her body protested at the sudden movement. Marlene grabbed the hand that had so recently assaulted her delicate ribs and tugged her friend to his feet. “I do so love chocolate,” she replied thoughtfully. “James always buys the best kind, too. Quite thoughtful of him,” she added with a giggle. The pair trudged back up to the castle, and Marlene suggested stopping in to the kitchens to grab a couple sandwiches and some pumpkin juice.

“What! No, we were doing so well!” He said grabbing the phone out of her hand reading the article. “How the hell did he break his foot?” He said putting it on the table. “The back up is terrible, we might as well just stop playing now.” He said laying his head on the table.
Marlene slid the phone back in front of her, tapping at the screen before looking back at James. “Stupid git tried to do a full Wronski Feint before practicing the move beforehand,” she replied, her voice full of irritation. Marlene had been an avid fan of her homeland’s Quidditch team since before she learned to fly. “It’s maddening,” she said, agreeing with James’ assessment of the younger back up Keeper. “Guess we’ll be stuck rooting for the Chudley Canons with Gideon and Fabian,” she said glumly.
Marlene sighed as she stared at her phone. “Have you seen this?” she asked, flipping it around so James could see the headline she was talking about. “The Keeper for the Scottish International team is laid up in St Mungo’s! It says he’ll be out of the game for the next six months. Six months, James! We’re never going to go the Finals at this rate.”
Bringing Up Memories || Gideon & Marlene
Gideon held her so tight. He knew that Marlene was here because of him, because of his family. He knew how close she had been to his mum and he loved her for that. Marlene really was like a second daughter to his mother and he knew that wouldn’t ever change even now that she wasn’t here anymore. “Thank you.” He muttered and leaned against her as they went into the photoalbum.
He smiled softly and nodded. “I do too, I had just gotten that broomstick for my birthday and I was really happy because the year before Fabian had gotten one and I didn’t want one, but I kept stealing his so often that my parents decided to give me one as well.” He looked at the picture and smiled, watching little Gideon shoot from one side of the picture to the otherside. “God I was such a show off back then.” He smiled “You were there too, on that birthday, I remember that because it was the second or third time that you came to our birthdays and I wanted you to get on the back of the broom with me. Do you remember that?”
Marlene nodded and squeezed Gideon for a moment before letting him go. “You’re welcome,” she replied quietly, blinking back the sudden burning in her eyes. She kept one arm around his waist as they turned to look at the album. Her fingers moved soothingly across his back, almost without her realizing it. Comforting her friends came naturally to Marlene.
She smiled as Gideon put into words a memory she hadn’t thought of in many years. “You’re still a show off now,” she said softly. She smiled slightly to show she was joking. “Yes, I do remember,” she added wistfully. “It took quite awhile for you to convince me. In the end, I think I finally climbed on after your mum told me to stop teasing you.” She smiled again and sniffed as the stinging came back with a vengeance. Marlene reached out and flipped the page with a finger. She nearly choked on her laughter when she saw an eleven-year-old Marlene and Gideon holding their Hogwarts acceptance letters. They had hidden Fabian’s letter, and he was standing apart from his brother and his friend with his arms crossed and his brows furrowed. “Oh we were horrible to poor Fabian,” she commented. “How long did it take him to find his letter, anyway?”
High in the Sky || Frank and Marlene
Frank hung his head, holding himself up by resting his hands on his knees. His practice gear was soaked in sweat and his head throbbed. When Marlene landed next to him he lurched forward and vomited clear liquid onto the quidditch pitch. “Yeah, he’s dead,” muttered Frank as he spat down at the fresh grass. After he’d collected himself, Frank took a deep breath and chuckled. “What are you up to after this?” It wasn’t the first time he’d blown chunks after a rough practice. James was intense and accepted nothing short of perfection.
Because of quidditch practices like this, over the years he and Marlene had developed a camaraderie. They’d spend their evenings pontificating to each other about how much of an arse James was. They loved their captain but he could be a real piece of work.
Marlene watched with mild revulsion as Frank expelled the contents of his stomach. It wasn’t the first time she’d witnessed such a thing, and she was certain it wouldn’t be the last. The Quidditch final was fast approaching, and James had booked the pitch for every available opening. Her own stomach was cramped, and her muscles were screaming in protest.
The blonde waved her wand, Vanishing the mess from the grass before collapsing backward. To her tired, aching body, the field was as comfortable as her bed. “I’m not sure I’m able to be up for anything right now,” she replied honestly. Her hands throbbed as proof from where she’d been gripping the handle of her broomstick for too many hours. She turned her head to him lazily. She and Frank had developed a routine after years of grueling practice, and she always looked forward to the moment she could dismount her broom and vent to her friend. They were each others’ confidantes, and James was more often than not the subject of their complaints.

“Hey!” He said falling on the floor. “Thanks for that, I was very comfortable.” He said poking her back. “I’ll never let you fall asleep on me again.”
Marlene grinned and crossed her legs primly. “You’re welcome,” she replied before taking pity and scooting over so he’d have room next to her. “You don’t mean that,” she said in mock horror.
“Um…The goblins and Binns.” He said snatching the book out of her hands. “You’re comfortable.”
“Yeah well, I don’t care,” she retorted, sticking her tongue out at her friend. She moved her legs up and down before poking James in the hip. “And you’re not,” she replied pointedly.
High in the Sky || Frank and Marlene
Marlene was positively glowering at James when the captain finally called an end to practice. It had gone over by two hours, and she was more than ready to shower and collapse on one of the couches in the Gryffindor common room. Sure she loved Quidditch, but she was nowhere near as committed as James was. He took it too seriously.
The blonde took a deep, calming breath before landing lightly on the grass of the pitch next to Frank. “James better sleep with one eye open tonight,” she muttered darkly.
Bringing Up Memories || Gideon & Marlene
It took just that for Gideon to stop try and be strong, he leaned against her and felt the tears fall down his cheeks. He didn’t think he would have more tears left after the last couple of days, but apparently he had and all it took was his best friend to hug him. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight, “I just can’t imagine that she’s actually gone now.” He whispered, “I know it’s better for her, but I don’t want to feel better about this..” He looked at her “Thank you for coming today, you have no idea how much that meant to me.’
The funeral had been beautiful, like his mother had been, quiet but beautiful. It had been like Gideon would’ve wanted it to be. But it had meant the world to him to see Marlene there, he had been home from school for the past week to prepare for the funeral and the fact that she’d come, made him feel so grateful.
Marlene held Gideon all the tighter as his sadness broke loose. His tears were not a sign weakness but rather of loss. It was a simple thing, really, to hold him close to her and comfort him. Her fingers found their way into his hair, and they sifted through his locks over and over. Her head rested easily on his shoulder. Marlene sighed softly in response to his whispered statement. She squeezed him tighter for a moment before pulling back slightly to see him better. “There isn’t anywhere else I could be right now,” she replied quietly.
Not even Dumbledore himself could’ve stopped Marlene from being there today, and she’d told him as much when she’d gone to see him the day before. No way was she going to miss something as important as the funeral of Mrs Prewett; the woman had practically been a second mother to Marlene. Pulling back further, she let her fingers trail down the back of his neck before dropping from his shoulders to pick up the book he’d been looking at. A fond smile curled Marlene’s lips as the pages fell open. “I remember this,” she said softly, watching an eight-year-old Gideon show off on a new toy broomstick.
“What are you reading then?” James said plopping down on her lap, grabbing the book out of her lap.
“History of Magic. Who in the world cares about the Great Goblin Riots of 1285?” she replied with a groan. She shifted in her seat, trying to accommodate the added weight of her best friend.

Bringing Up Memories || Gideon & Marlene
Gideon wandered up to his room. His mum’s funeral had just finished and while he was happy to be back home, he felt a bit lost. He’d never been in his house without his mother, she’d always been there, always been around him. It felt weird being in a house that held so many memories and she would never walk into his room again. He would never be able to hug her again, to listen to her stories, to have her help cheer him up, to get advice from her..
He pulled his legs up on the bed and crossed them, he held one of the photo albums that his mum always put together for him and his siblings. His mum loved taking pictures of everything, whether it was a recital, or a school thing or even if it was just simple things like baking together or them playing outside. He looked through it, a faint smile on his face, a tear running down his cheek.
Marlene stood in the Prewetts’ kitchen after one of the saddest events she’d ever attended. She hadn’t been to many funerals in her short life, but in the back of her mind, Marlene expected that that would change soon enough. Shaking herself from such gloomy thoughts, she looked around the room. It was crowded with witches and wizards of varying ages and professions, all come to pay their respects. From the corner of her eye, she saw Gideon, and as her head turned toward him, he vanished around a corner.
Marlene made a snap decision to follow him. By the time she had elbowed her way through the crowd and across the room, Gideon was nowhere to be seen. That didn’t deter Marlene in the least; she knew where he had gone. She found him just where she’d thought, and she paused a moment in the doorway to study him before he noticed her. The image of one of her best friends sat with a photo album and a sad smile was achingly beautiful, and she had a sudden urge to wrap him up in the tightest hug she could manage. So she did just that. She was across the room in a heartbeat, sitting down next to him and throwing her arms around him. She didn’t speak; they’d been friends long enough not to need to, not yet. She spoke her emotions with touches and movements.
“If I have to read a single sentence more, my brain may explode.” Marlene sat back and rubbed her temples. With her eyes closed, she slumped down further in her chair and sighed.
