#i couldnt swallow pills for an embarrassingly long time #and my final breaking point was an allergy headache when i was like 14 #and we had no liquid medicines in the house #so i crushed up a motrin pill #and a decongestant pill #and mixed each of them with water and took them like shots #mind you i had no idea what theyd taste like. they didnt smell like much so i figured theyd be bland #they tasted so goddamn awful i forgot what id done and immediately thought i was dying and that i had been poisoned #i was hyperventilating and gripping the counter bc i was so disoriented #i screamed for help #it mustve been a panic attack bc my sister came downstairs and had to console me #whilst piecing together what looked like baby’s first coke line bc the counter was still covered in crushed pill dust #learned how to swallow pills that day

what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at.

this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.

the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…
