And the quiet melancholy. He is not discontent with his life because he is too accepting, too used to it to even think of rebelling. But that loneliness and - once again, I don’t want to say depression because it’s not that in a clinical sense at least - so maybe melancholy is a good word - are grinding him down to nothing. I need both of them to find joy in this world.

The thing that struck me so much about this scene is that she responds to his quietness with her own (or maybe his quietness responds to hers.) She just sits there listening, occasionally asking simple questions but he opens up to that - because he recognizes that he is safe to do so but, more than that, that she is genuinely interested not in a famous pianist or whatever but in him as a person because they have this current of mutual empathy running between them.
