Buying and holding vacant real estate has also become costlier. This apparently hasn’t helped Opendoor and Offerpad — two “iBuyer” businesses optimized for a low-interest rate environment that also have seen their shares crater. Last week, Opendoor laid off 300 employees amid mounting losses.

Private, venture-backed companies have faltered as well. Veev, a Bay Area startup that raised nearly $600 million to reinvent the homebuilding process, shuttered last year and sold its assets to homebuilder Lennar. Investment around the broader smart home theme has also weakened, as we chronicled earlier this year.

For commercial real estate, meanwhile, it doesn’t help that the most famous venture-backed play in this space is undeniably WeWork. The co-working company emerged from bankruptcy this summer, effectively wiping out the billions in equity it raised over the years.

US commercial real estate finance and advisory firm Walker & Dunlop has promoted Dan Groman to general counsel on a permanent basis, having been standing in as interim GC since May.

Groman had been deputy GC at Walker & Dunlop since 2012. As GC, he will be responsible for the company’s legal and compliance groups, also holding the role of chief compliance officer.

Walker & Dunlop is one of the largest commercial real estate finance businesses in the US, providing financing and investment management services to real estate investors.

Groman originally joined Walker & Dunlop from Freddie Mac in 2011 as associate GC, before being promoted to deputy GC less than a year later. He had spent just under seven years at Freddie Mac as associate GC and deputy GC of the Freddie Mac Foundation. Prior to that he was an associate at Arnold & Porter.

He replaces Richard Lucas, who announced he was leaving the company back in May. He had been GC at Walker & Dunlop for more than 13 years, having previously been GC at Hilton Worldwide. Like Groman, he is also an Arnold & Porter alum, where he spent close to two decades, 10 years of which as partner. He is currently vice chair of the Yale Law School Fund and also owns his own real estate business, Della Realty.

In other real estate-related moves, in September US real estate group Amherst hired Lendlease’s Americas GC Peter Campbell as its new legal head, replacing Gabriel Steffens who left earlier in the year.

In May, US real estate business Prologis promoted deputy GC Deborah Briones to chief legal officer, replacing Ed Nekritz, who was stepping down after almost three decades with the company.

The National Capital Region (NCR) has witnessed an impressive 137 per cent rise in housing prices in the last five years. According to a report by PropEquity, the cities like Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida are seeing prices more than double between 2019 and 2024 September.

The report said that this has been possible due to the investor confidence, strong homeownership sentiments, large-scale infrastructure development (such as Noida International Airport, Dwarka Expressway, Delhi-Meerut expressway, Rapid raid, metro expansion among others), and rising cost of land and construction.

NCR Real Estate Market The data released by NSE-listed firm also noted that between 2019 and September 2024, Noida saw the highest rise at 152 per cent (from Rs 5910 per sq. ft. to Rs 14,946 per sq. ft.), followed by Ghaziabad at 139 per cent (from Rs 3691 per sq. ft. to Rs 8823 per sq. ft.), Gurugram at 135 per cent (from Rs 8299 per sq. ft. in 2019 to Rs 19,535 per sq. ft. in 2024) and Greater Noida at 121 per cent from Rs 3900 per sq. ft. to Rs 8601 per sq. ft.). Commenting on the development, Samir Jasuja, Founder-CEO, PropEquity said that the NCR market will continue to outperform other tier 1 cities and see more investment and expansion from branded developers.

While Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida saw an outstanding rise by 222 per cent, 14 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively. Aftab Poonawala, who allegedly killed his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar in 2022, was reportedly on the target list of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, according to Mumbai Police officials investigating the murder of politician Baba Siddique last month.

Sources in the Crime Branch have said that Shivkumar Gautam, the alleged main shooter in the Ajit Pawar party leader's murder, revealed that Bishnoi gang member Shubham Lonkar had discussed attacking Poonawala with him.

The gang, however, reportedly refrained from attacking Poonawala due to his heightened security at Tihar jail, the sources added.

In a grisly crime that shocked the country, Poonawala allegedly strangled 27-year-old Walkar to death at their rented accommodation in south Delhi's Chhattarpur Pahadi on May 18, 2022.

The police, in its charge sheet that contains spine chilling details, said Poonawala used a saw, among other weapons, to dismember the body into several parts and store them in a refrigerator. He later disposed of the body parts around forest areas over time.

He was arrested on November 12, 2022 and is currently lodged in Tihar jail.

Siddique (66) was shot dead by three gunmen near his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique's office in Mumbai's Bandra area on October 12. The Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the murder.

According to the police, three shooters were involved in the murder and all of them have been arrested.

Robert F Kennedy Jr, Donald Trump’s choice to head the US Health Department, recently delivered a scathing critique of the President-elect’s eating habits, labelling what he heats as "poison". In a recent interview, RFK Jr, asserted that Trump’s diet during the campaign trail was “really bad”.

Kennedy is an ardent advocate for removal of processed foods from grocery store shelves, while Trump is notorious for his fondness for fast food.

“Campaign food is always bad, but the food that goes onto that airplane is, like, just poison. You have a choice between — you don’t have the choice, you’re either given KFC or Big Macs. That’s, like, when you’re lucky, and then the rest of the stuff I consider kind of inedible,” he remarked.

Kennedy, during the interview, also recalled a conversation with an executive of a mixed martial arts company who told him that he would sometimes sit through an hour-long fight with Trump, “and he’s never seen Trump drink a glass of water,” news outlet Daily Beast reported.

“And then he (drinks) Diet Coke,” Kennedy said.

However, Kennedy also acknowledges the cultural significance of fast food in America. He has defended it as part of American culture, despite his health initiatives.

On Friday, Trump named RFK Jr, an anti-vaccine campaigner to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

"We want you to come up with things and ideas and what you've been talking about for a long time and I think you're going to do some unbelievable things," Trump told him.

Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has defended his controversial 70-hour workweek comments and added that hard work is crucial to India's progress. “I am sorry, I have not changed my view. I will take this with me to my grave,” Mr Murthy said at the CNBC Global Leadership Summit.

The veteran entrepreneur said he was “disappointed” with India's shift from a six-day workweek to a five-day workweek in 1986. Mr Murthy also said that India's development requires sacrifice, not relaxation.

Drawing attention to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 100-hour workweeks, he said, “When PM Modi is working that hard, the only way to show our appreciation for what's happening around us is by working just as hard.”

He pointed to the example of post-WWII Germany and Japan, suggesting India follow a similar path of hard work and national rebuilding. “This is what they did to rebuild their countries,” Mr Murthy noted.

Mr Murthy also shared personal insights into his work ethic, revealing that throughout much of his career, he maintained an intense schedule of 14-hour days, six and a half days a week. He would arrive at the office by 6:30 am and leave at around 8:40 pm. “I'm proud of it,” he said.

To improve the delivery of public services, Mr Murthy had a suggestion for PM Modi. He proposed that the government consider hiring more managers with formal training over administrators selected through the current civil services examination system.

Once a candidate is selected, he or she will be taken to Mussoorie (where the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy Of Administration is located) for training, where he or she will be trained in specialised sector agriculture, defence or manufacturing, which is a departure from the current practice of creating general administrators, he said.

Six people died a horrific death in a car accident in Uttarakhand's Dehradun earlier this week as they were returning from a party. The incident took place around 1.30 am at the ONGC Chowk on November 12 when the car they were in collided with a truck, reducing their vehicle to a mangled wreck.

A disturbing video of the incident is doing rounds on social media which shows the impact of the collision was so strong that it tore off the Toyota Innova's roof and twisted it. Two passengers were left decapitated in the incident. The visuals also show one of the victim's head ripped off, while another person's body can be seen twisted inside the crushed car. Several other body parts of the victims are also seen scattered around the road.

According to media reports, a group of seven friends were returning from a party that night and were drunk.

The victims were identified as Kunal Kukreja (23), Atul Agrawal (24), Rishabh Jain (24), Navya Goel (23), Kamakshi (20), and Guneet (19). While, the seventh person, Siddhesh Agrawal (25), who had reportedly hosted the party in Dehradun, is the sole survivor but remains in a critical condition, the police said.

While six victims hailed from Dehradun, Kukreja is from Himachal Pradesh, officials said.

According to the police, it was not immediately clear where the group was coming from and an investigation is underway.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed grief at the loss of lives in the incident.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cancelled the planned trophy tour of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Skardu, Murree, and Muzaffarabad, areas which fall within Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The decision came shortly after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the inclusion of these cities in the tour itinerary, which drew immediate objections from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Notably, the PCB had announced a nationwide trophy tour of the Champions Trophy from November 16 to 24.

The eight-team tournament is set to be held in Pakistan in February-March 2025 and to build up for the cricketing extravaganza, the PCB had organized the trophy tour. However, India Today has learnt that the trophy tour has been cancelled in the cities falling under the disputed land of the Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Meanwhile, the Champions Trophy 2025 has been marred by controversy due to India’s reluctance to travel to Pakistan for the cricketing event. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has written to the ICC seeking clarification on India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. In its letter to the ICC, the PCB has requested an official explanation regarding India's stance. The communication from Pakistan does not discuss the event format or a potential hybrid model.

The PCB has confirmed in a statement that it was informed by the ICC about the BCCI’s decision. Reportedly, the PCB has forwarded the ICC’s communication to the Pakistani government to determine the next steps. This stand-off between the PCB and BCCI has left the future of the Champions Trophy in doubt. Pakistan has already allocated close to 17 billion rupees to upgrade stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in preparation for the tournament next year.

The ICC was reportedly set to announce the schedule, without confirmation of the venues, in the second week of November. According to a tentative schedule, the Champions Trophy is set to be held from February 19 to March 9, with matches scheduled in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi.

While Nadal transitions into his new role as ambassador for the Saudi Tennis Federation, Djokovic acknowledged the mixed reactions to tennis's embrace of Saudi Arabia, choosing to focus on the positive aspects. CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Friday arrested two persons, including a suspended functionary of Tamil Nadu BJP, K Harish (31) who was one of the directors of Aarudhra Gold trading private limited, which allegedly cheated investors to the tune of Rs 2,400 crore.

Apart from Harish, Police also arrested J Malathy of Tondiarpet who was an additional director in the firm, in charge of the firm’s dealings in Vellore and Tiruchy regions.

Both of them were absconding for more than 10 months and managed to evade arrest.

According to Police, the firm had collected money from over one lakh depositors between September 2020 and May 2022, promising them interests in the range of 25–30 % for their deposits.

After investors realised that they have been cheated, hundreds of them approached the police across the state after which, in May last year, the EOW registered a case under several Sections of IPC including 420 (cheating and sections of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes (BUDS) Act and Sections of the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (TNPID) Act.

A total of 21 persons were booked and eight top executives of the firm including the Directors- Baskar, Mohanbabu, Senthil Kumar, Pattabiraman and managers Rafik, Ayyappan and two agents were arrested.
