“Luke,” Miss Ava warns, her eyes flashing. “I have no need for dogs that bark back. You are useless to me if you don’t follow orders.”

Marius watches the exchange with raised brows and feigned interest. He still doesn’t particularly care about Luke, even though he’s the famed chainsaw boy everyone keeps talking about. It’s only mildly interesting how Miss Ava is treating Luke like a mutt. Maybe Marius should treat him the same way.

“Pleasure working with you.” Marius reaches out to pat Luke’s head instead, resisting the urge to pull his hand back when he feels oily and matted strands of hair.

Turns out he doesn’t need to because Luke recoils instantly, looking at him once again with barely-concealed distrust and anger.

Marius shrugs. At least he tried.
