As I’m sure some of you have noticed, pretty recently, the creators at Mob Entertainment released a DLC for Minecraft on the Marketplace centered around Poppy Playtime.
Considering the quality of most of the content uploaded to The Marketplace, I was initially quite impressed! But, ultimately, after scraping the files and using the mod myself, I ended up actually feeling somewhat disappointed.
As per usual with Mob Entertainment, the DLC animations are absolutely stellar! Well done! They absolutely live up to the now pretty high standards Mob has setup for themselves with both their Youtube content, and games.
I cannot say the same for the quality of the models, however.
While models such as Huggy Wuggy and Doey the Doughman do an ultimately good job at accurately representing the character, models like Catnap and The Doctor I feel do not live up to the expectations of content output released by Mob Entertainment as of recent, especially with the original Poppy Playtime game.
Overall, I’d say Huggy & Friends is a good DLC, but there is much that could’ve been done to make it better.
..but whats the fun in a thread such as this if I don’t share my nit-picky and pointless criticisms, hm?
The models I will share are NOT meant to be a golden standard or what the ideal take of these characters in a style as flexible as Minecraft’s should look like! You are allowed to like whatever you please!! These are just MY interpretation of these characters done in MY modeling style. I will go into more detail about what I do and don’t like about each character in their respective descriptions, along with sharing my own models of said respective characters. This thread does NOT cover gameplay.
Now, with that out of the way, let’s start off with..
One of the main characters of Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4, Doey the Doughman is one of few Bigger Bodies that is actually (at least at the beginning) and ally to the player. A “Jolly Giant” would be an accurate description.
You may have noticed that this is a character I actually said did a pretty good job being represented in the original DLC, and I still stand by that. The main criticisms I have for the design in Huggy & Friends is that..
1. The color choices are slightly off. This is minor, but still something I noticed.
2. The face is a bit stale. It being textured on certainly doesn’t help. For such an expressive character like Doey, I would’ve like to see them go the extra mile in representing him. To see him only have 2 expressions ingame was a little disappointing to me.
In my interpretation, one of the main things I wanted to change was said expressiveness. How did I do this? Simple! By using interchangeable panels, I could give him a near countless amount of different mouth and eye shapes. This way, it makes it far easier to change and switch out expressions, while also giving you the ability to modify and switch out parts as necessary, to give you even MORE customization options!
These are just a few examples, there are several more I unfortunately did not have the space to depict.
The main antagonist of Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3. When not looking over the children in playcare, you may find this not so jolly giant engaging in some nefarious activities with a certain someone who will not be named.
Unlike Doey, this is likely.. my least favorite of the Bigger Bodies that is currently found in Huggy & Friends. While overall a good model with great animations, I feel that this model misses the mark on nearly all counts otherwise.
1. Once again, the colors are a bit off. This is, again, a very minor critique, but its is an unfortunately noticeable pattern.
2. He’s.. not smiling? For whatever reason, instead of using 1 extra cube to emulate a smile, they decided to give him an awkward gaping hole for the mouth? It’s very strange to me.
3. His proportions are a little off. Obviously, to fit with the low block count of Minecraft, some sacrifices need to be made, but I feel it would’ve absolutely been possible to be proportionally closer to the canon model while still being low poly.
4. The shading is just ugly. Absolutely not helped by the choice to make his base texture darker than the canon designs color. It lacks a lot of necessary definition, and is visually lackluster.
5. The model is stiff, and could have far better rigging and articulation.
6. The model is not 1:1. In other words, its not pixel consistent, and is too small compared to the canon design.
By far, this is the model I’m disappointed by the most. Out of everyone, it does the worst job accurately representing the character it’s meant to. The best way to describe the differences between it and mine is that mine is, to put it bluntly, far closer to the canon design. More accurate colors, proportions, and scaling.
What a.. questionable smile. :D
