Doodles from basquiat trip
For the performance project we are doing a play called “sredni vashtar”, which is a play about a boy who has a overprotective cousin that he loathes, but finds solace with a ferret in a hutch that he keeps in the shed of the house, who he treats like a god. he prays for this ferret implicitly to kill his cousin,and he does so. This was a whole year project, and we allocated roles to ourselves to all play a part in the plays production. I initially started off in costume and set design, but then moved to visuals, after me and yassmine decided to collab on projections and shadow puppets for the show. we re read the script and tried to imagine which sections would require visual projections, such as voodoo dolls for the ritual scenes and a hurting tooth for mrs duropps toothache scene. We looked at animations and short films of the story shown below,for inspiration and to understand the mood of the story better. As everyone was trying to make content at the same time it was difficult to keep track of everyones ideas and sync them up, but after a few meetings me and yass decided to focus on doing the toothache visuals as well as the shadow puppet of shredni vashtar the ferret.

heros and vilains summer brief
I didn't really know how to begin this project , so i started looking at old 80s comic books for inspiration. I created my ‘dream’ evil lair,thinking about all the high tech gadgets and gismos that a classic super villain would need, with a key on the right.
I also created a poster made from scanning in old comic book small ads and action words, as well as my own linoprint to create this duotone poster to be printed on yellow paper and sell at the illustration fair!
For the heroes and villains project, I initially decided to carry on my concepts from my narratives of the unconscious movie plot ,and explore how my ‘donut hero’ helps me get out of creative blocks. i used various styles and mediums to create a small zine about him. I created a puzzle page of brain teasers,and a few experimental pages playing around with the conceptual imagery.
In the crit I was told to create more sketchbook work, and then collate all of that into a bigger zine. I think I may start again with another idea as i'm not sure how to develop this project, as there isn't much source material.

This was the poster that i created to finalise the donut mini zine, printed on the back of the poster zine so that it folds out. It utilises the background texture from my pink donut poster, but completely recoloured. The imagery is of a surreal scene of the donut in a frame with encouraging words, the very wobbly people holding it up representing my anxieties about being creative. Although I do not like my concept for this project, I think this poster itself came out quite well!
Making the invisible visible The brief for this project was to utilise the aurasma augmented reality app, and create our own ‘auras’ to be projected when they hit a certain trigger. From playing around with the app I realised that bold,block shapes and colours work best because they are easily recognised by the software, whereas more delicate imagery has a harder time being recognised. I decided to look at signs,initially the signs around the university.
While considering playing around with signs for my project , I decided to particular look at pool pool signs. I chose this because of the sense of community of the pool, and the recurring little figures and commands that are prominent on the signs. I initially had problems utilising the narrative element, but after an interim crit the idea occurred about animating the characters in the signs do the opposite of what the signs say, e.g. run when the sign says no running, and interact with other signs, e.g. one characters runs onto another characters sign.
However, one big problem i has with swimming pool signs was the fact that photography is strictly prohibited in swimming pools, so therefore i had to get the managers permission to come in after the pool was shut and really quickly take photos, while having multiple lifeguards also ask me what i am doing!
I started off the animations by drawing out frame by frame images in my sketchbook,which I was to then align on photoshop and combine together to make gifs.
first gif i did was of the ‘no armbands beyond this point sign’, with the armbands popping when the gif is interacted with. two gif interacting with each other. I originally had the top running gif just run straight through the circle, but after talking to jeremy he suggested having the character fall through the circle instead as it would look more interesting and comical.
As i was busy preparing my presentation for the Nagoya exchange, i didn't manage to fully complete all the work i wanted for assessment, but was able to create a short powerpoint on my progress that i showed at my crit. I didn't have time to test out the auras in the pool but i tried them out on print outs of the signs and they worked reasonably well,except for the animations not playing the full way through.I got overall positive feedback on my animations, but I had a number of points to work on before assessment:
•Create 2 more gifs from signs
•Add sound effects (splashing .ect)
•Fix the gif glitch of not playing full loop (make into video?)
•Try out in actual pool

Narratives of the unconscious
we began this project with a kind of meditation session where we sat with a partner and closed our eyes as jasper read out prompts for an imaginary journey in our heads. we said the first things that came into our heads and the partner drew their interpretation of what we said. This is what my picture ending up looking like, as you can see there is a lot going on!! after this we also discussed our inner characters,e.g. inner critic/scared child ect. and how they affect our relationship with our work. I will need to to devise a plot for a film based on the characters in my mind i have been introduced to in this session, which could include, a donut on a skateboard w 7 heads,kool aid man, donald trump. there is a lot of abstract concepts that i could explore here so i think this will be a fun project, though quite scary as i have no experience with film/animaton at all!
Marlena Synchyshyn - inspiration for heroes and villains
Her lenticular series and stand-alone illustrations often combine two opposite entities, placed together in juxtaposition. she features a lot of female archetypes in her work in an attempt to reinforce these ideas of multiplicity, she says, “You can be both strong and vulnerable, you can be connected to yourself and lose sight of yourself, you can be a feminist while participating in mainstream standards of beauty, whether it’s a personal choice or out of necessity.”
I think that baba yaga falls in this category of of duality. She's mercurial and dangerous, domestic and wild,which could be seen as a a reflection of men's fear of the sexual power of women. But she's also a reflection of the awe-inspiring power of Mother Nature, a complicated figure who's celebrated for her refusal to be tamed.
Bunraku is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, founded in Osaka in the beginning of 17th century. It is a form of puppetry that requires one or more people, holding up the puppets limbs to animate it.
We made Bunraku puppets in a workshop,using only newspaper and tape. we worked in groups and all made different parts of the body, I made the torso, and attached moveable limbs. As it was a bunraku puppet we had 3 of us animating it,trying to make it move as if it was alive. I think i will be making a bunraku puppet for my video as this was a lot of fun, and now I have learnt how to do it,make limbs work ect.
At one of our film club on thursday evenings we watched The Adventures of Prince Achmed, a 1926 German animated fairytale film by Lotte Reiniger. It is the oldest surviving animated feature film, featuring a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera. I looked at the beautiful and delicate cut outs for inspiration while working on the shadow puppet of sredni.
yassmine and I worked together on created a huge shadow puppet of sredni the ferret, which proved to be a big challenge. First off, we found it really hard to capture the ‘likeness’ of a ferret, with people suggesting our initial attempts looked more like a lion,badger,even a lizard. we used black card red acetate and pins to make him, and he ended up being around 5 feet! we tried add string and poles to manually animate the shadow puppet while shining a light through it, and although it looked really great, it was too large for the two of us to be able to fully animate the paws and head. Instead, we decided to stop frame animate sredni and project him on the wall. we borrowed pauls special camera frame and shot him from above moving across white paper, then animated it together in photoshop.

The first test (awful quality sorry) video is of the first couple gifs i made.The auras work, however the animations glitch out and don't play the full loop. I will have to work on the format of the animations so that they play through fully,as well as adding sound and more auras.
