Jessie doesn't nerd out often but when she does, it's about snakes or fashion. After she released Arbok and sent Seviper to HQ, I feel like she missed them so much she just got deep into ophiology
Do you think Jessie would ask Brock for cooking advice so she could make a nice meal for Deliah?
i think sheβd initially go to james or meowth since they all cook together well as a team. but if they werenβt available for any reason or if it were a recipe neither of them were familiar with sheβd go to the best cook she knows (brock)

Woo! Finale time! I wanted to make this final battle feel special and give it more substance than I could do with just a comic. So! I got the help of @cyberwulf to write out this ending in fanfic form! Check it out here on AO3 if you prefer! If not, the journey continues below the cut~
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
The water of the Cerulean gym battlefield glistened in the sunshine streaming through its crystal glass roof. Both teams gazed at each other with steely determination (and some lingering confusion, in Mistyβs case) as above them, the Drone Rotom announced the rules.
βAll right!β Misty declared. βThis is an official League battle for the Cascade badge!β
βAnd bragging rights!β Jessie added with a smirk.
βWeβll see about that!β Ash retorted. Misty glanced at him, taking in his clenched fists and gritted teeth. Sheβd seen Ash determined before, butβ¦ there was something here that she was missing. However, with the Drone Rotom hovering expectantly overhead, finding out what that something was would have to wait.
βItβs a shame we donβt have any Grass or Electric-types,β Delia mused. βI guess weβll just have to do our best with what we have.β Pushing her bangs out of her face, she called, βI choose you!β
Pikachu gazed across the water at Kangaskhan, ears and tail up, alert to⦠something. But before anyone could figure out what had caught his attention, there was a small cry.
βKangaskhan!β
The baby squirmed, spooked by the glistening water lapping all around the rock. She buried her face in her motherβs belly and cried again. Cradling her young protectively, Kangaskhan gave Delia an apologetic look.
Venomoth looked back and forth between Jessie and the battlefield as it fluttered about agitatedly, utterly confused by the barrage of unfamiliar orders.
βThis is just sad,β Misty muttered, getting a nod of agreement from Ash. Raising her voice, she called out, βCorsola! Use Spike Cannon!β
Corsola glowed, and a split second later a shower of glowing white spikes slammed into Venomoth, driving it backwards towards the trainer box.
βWeβre not giving up!β Jessie snarled, clenching her fists. βVenomoth! Get back out there!β
With a trill, Venomoth shook off the spikes, and floated towards its opponents again.
βCorsola!β Misty called. βHit it with another Spike Cannon!β
Corsola began to glow.
βWell donβt just hover there!β Jessie barked out. βItβs about to attack again!β Venomoth looked back at her, and Jessie gestured angrily towards the battlefield. βJust do something! Anything!β
Once more, glowing white spikes shot towards Venomoth. This time, however, Venomoth dove towards the attack, sweeping its wings in front of itself at the last minute. Blue blades of light cut through the barrage of spikes, one hitting Corsola and driving it back.
Leaping high into the air, Oshawott sent a powerful jet of water directly at Jessieβs Venomoth. With a cry, the Poison Moth hit the floor between Jessie and Delia, bounced once, and fainted.
βHey, no fair!β Jessie bellowed, stamping her foot. βI was distracted!β She recalled Venomoth with a scowl. βI ought to ground you for making me look bad!β
Saluting, Wobbuffet waddled forward, straight into the water. Jessie pinched the bridge of her nose as Wobbuffet awkwardly clambered up onto the protruding rock.
βWobbles canβt attack unless heβs attacked first,β Delia murmured to herself. βOshawott is strong, and Corsola can use Recover to gain back health. That means Iβve got to make this next move count!β She looked to Clefairy, wet and winded but not out of the battle. It was risky, butβ¦
βClefairy! Use Metronome!β
βMetronome?!β Misty exclaimed as Clefairy began to move her fingers hypnotically back and forth. βNow anything can happen!β
Razor-sharp leaves whipped through the air, striking Oshawott and Corsola. The Grass-Type move was too much for the dual Rock/Water Type, and Corsola collapsed into the water, fainted. Oshawott was driven back against the rock ridge, and Ash held his breath, but the Drone Rotom only counted Corsola out.
βItβs okay, honey,β Delia murmured, placing her hand on Jessieβs shoulder. βWe can beat them. We just need to use strategy!β
βGyarados!β Misty called out. Jessie may not have been the best trainer, and her track record with him was hit or miss, but Wobbuffet could reflect almost any attack. It might just have been luck, but Clefairyβs Metronome had taken out Corsola and left Oshawott just barely hanging on. There was only one choice of target.
The yellow mouse nodded, one tiny fist raised. βPika!β
βYou be nice to us now, Pikachu!β Delia cheered brightly.
Jessie was less optimistic.
βBabe, this isnβt looking good,β she murmured urgently. βIβve been beaten by that Pikachu a zillion times! And that Gyarados looks strong. And mean! I donβt know ifβ¦β
She trailed off as the other woman took her hands.
βNow you listen to me, Jessie Ketchum.β Delia gazed into her eyes, a look of fierce determination on her face. βA zillion battles. A zillion losses. Against that very Pikachu. And you never gave up. So youβre not gonna give up now! Okay?β
Jessie stared back at her. Time seemed to stand still. Deliaβs fingers were warm on her own as her words of encouragement hung in the air.
βJessieβ¦ Ketchum?β
With the briefest of nods, Delia turned to face their opponents.
βAsh honey, donβt you hold back just because Iβm your mom!β she called. βWeβre going to give it our all, even if we lose!β
βSheβs a lot like you, Ash,β Misty laughed. As Ash tugged the brim of his hat down to hide his blush, she raised her voice and called to the challengers. βYouβre doing great, Ms. Ketchum! Iβm really impressed by your abilities as a trainer. Now show me youβre worthy of the Cascade badge!β
βHey!β Jessie yelled indignantly. βWhat am I, chopped liver?! My Venomoth pushed your Corsola to the brink!β
Misty grimaced. This was all still too strange β Jessie was a good guy? Jessie and Ashβs mom wereβ¦ partners? She struggled for something positive to say about Jessieβs performance so far.
βUh β yeah!β she managed. βIt was, uh, really great how you figured out that one move.β
Jessie put her hands on her hips. βUgh, could you sound any more insincere?!β
With a growl of impatience, Ash cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled across the battlefield. βHey! Are we gonna battle or what?β
βMimey!β she commanded. βUse Psychic on Pikachu!β
βMr Mime!β
Mimey fixed Pikachu with an intense stare, his eyes and hands glowing blue. Blue light enveloped the yellow mouse as he was lifted into the air. Pikachu strained and struggled, but couldnβt break free.
Ash groaned in exasperation.
βMisty, go for Mimey!β he called. βIf you weaken him, maybe Pikachu can break free. Plus, heβs a lot stronger than Wobbuffet!β
Misty nodded. βRight!β
βHey!β Jessie objected. βJust because itβs true doesnβt mean you have to say it!β She shook her fist at them. βI raised you better than that, Ash Ketchum!β
βWha β β Ash took a step back, flabbergasted. βYou didnβt raise me at all!β
βThe heck I didnβt!β Jessie retorted. βWho kept an eye on you while you twerped your way through eight regions, huh?!β
Misty rubbed her temples. The whole situation was giving her a headache.
βOh no, not Crunch!β Delia fretted, as Gyarados reared back, a sinister purple aura swirling around its fangs. βThatβs a Dark-Type move!β
βWobbuffet!β Jessie barked. βGet between Mimey and Gyarados and use Counter!β
Saluting, Wobbuffet leaped in front of Mimey, his body outlined in orange light. Crunch hit, hard, and bounced back twice as hard. Both Gyarados and Wobbuffet recoiled from the damage.
βWobbles!β Delia cried out, as Mimey caught Wobbuffet in his arms.
βDonβt you quit on me now, Wobbuffet!β Jessie shouted.
Wobbuffet saluted weakly as Mimey pushed him back onto his paws. The distraction worked, and Pikachu dropped back to the rock, freed from Psychic.
βKeep the pressure on, Pikachu!β Ash yelled. βUse Iron Tail on Mimey, now!β
βQuick, Mimey!β Delia shouted as Pikachu somersaulted through the air, tail glowing white. βUse Reflect!β
Pikachu hit the invisible barrier and flew backwards, landing in the water.
βMimey, keep using Reflect!β Delia shouted. βDonβt let them in!β She had to think. Poor Wobbles, he didnβt have much left β one more shot from that big Gyarados and that would be it. Not to mention that if Crunch hit Mimey, the battle would be over! Sheβd completely forgotten Gyarados could learn that move! Oh, maybe she shouldβve used Zaggy insteadβ¦
Mimey obediently continued to use Reflect as Gyarados and Pikachu attacked from either side. Slowly the invisible barriers began to box them in, till Mimey and Wobbuffet were crowded together on the rock.
βBabe!β Jessie urged. βWe have to do something or weβre gonna lose!β
βI know!β Delia groaned. βI justβ¦β She cupped her face in her hands, pulling down on her cheeks. ββ¦I donβt know!β
βMs Ketchum!β
Delia lifted her head.
βYou canβt let us back you into a corner!β Misty called. βUse your environment to find a way out!β
Ash shot her a glare. βHey, whose side are you on?!β
βItβs my job as a Gym leader to help trainers to learn,β Misty explained with a smile. βDid you forget?β
βYou didnβt help me when I battled you for the first time!β Ash replied indignantly, poking his thumb into his chest.
Misty glowered at him.
βThatβs because you still owed me a new bike, Ash Ketchum!β
βAaagh!β Ash placed both hands on his head, tugging his hat down. βCanβt you let that go already? It got repaired, didnβt it?β
While their opponents bickered, Delia had taken Mistyβs words to heart.
βUse the environmentβ¦β she mused. There was only one place Mimey and Wobbles could go β but first they had to do something about the double attacks coming their way.
βJessie!β she hissed, beckoning her partner to come closer. βCan you have Wobbles use Counter?β
Jessie looked at Wobbuffet, sweating nervously as he stood behind Mimey. She nodded.
βOkay,β Delia replied. She whispered quickly in the other womanβs ear. Jessie grinned, then straightened up.
βWobbuffet! Use Counter on both those attacks!β
In tandem, Mimey and Wobbuffet burst through the surface, taking up positions either side of Gyarados and Pikachu, trapping their opponents between them.
βGood work, you two!β Delia cheered. She pointed dramatically. βNow, Mimey β use Psychic on both of them!β
Once more, Mimeyβs eyes and hands glowed. Both Gyarados and Pikachu rose into the air, enveloped in blue light.
βGreat strategy, Ms. Ketchum!β Misty called, earning a dirty look from Ash which she ignored. βThereβs no point going for Wobbuffet β heβll just Counter our attacks again.β
βRight,β Ash agreed. βWeβve gotta take out Mimey!β He raised his voice. βPikachu!β
Misty did likewise. βGyarados!β
Delia grinned. βJust as I thought.β She looked at her partner. βGet ready with Mirror Coat!β
Jessie blinked in confusion. ββ¦Huh?β
βThunderbolt ββ
βHydro Pump ββ
βOn Mimey!β both young trainers yelled in unison.
There was no time to explain. Everything turned on a split second. Pikachu and Gyarados began to fall through the air. Several volts of electricity and a powerful torrent of water hit Mimeyβs Light Screen and barrelled towards Wobbuffet.
Wobbuffet glowed, shrouded in a reflective aura. Everything seemed to slow down. The attacks hit. They bounced back at Mimey. Pikachu and Gyarados fell. Ashβs mouth opened in a silent noooo.
The timing was perfect.
Gyarados and Pikachu fell in front of Mimey, taking the full brunt of Thunderbolt and Hydro Pump, doubled by Mirror Coat. The sheer force of the attacks drove them along the surface of the water, causing huge plumes of water to rise into the air either side of them. The battlefield disappeared in a shroud of surf and spray.
βPikachu!β Ash cried out.
All four trainers held their breath as the mist began to clear.
Jessie cried out in dismay on seeing Wobbuffet floating belly-up in the water. Ash groaned on spotting Pikachu doing likewise. Draped over the rock, Gyarados lifted its head weakly, then dropped it again.
Delia scanned the water, a smile spreading across her face as Mimey swam to the rock and clambered up, standing tall with a cry of, βMr. Mime!β
βWobbuffet, Pikachu, and Gyarados are unable to battle,β the Drone Rotom declared, as Ash sank to his knees. βThe winners are the challengers, Delia and Jessie!β
βIβ¦ I canβt believe thisβ¦β Ash moaned.
βWeβ¦β Jessie couldnβt stop staring at the battlefield, Drone Rotomβs words ringing in her ears. ββ¦we won?β She looked to Delia, and the joyful look on her face confirmed it. βWe WON!!!β
Delia shrieked as Jessie caught hold of her and lifted her high in the air, doing a twirl before setting her back on her feet and peppering her face with kisses. βHahahaha!β She turned to their opponents, pulling down on one eyelid while sticking her tongue out. βSuck it, twe β I mean, Ash and Misty! I knew this day would come sooner or later!β
βJessica, I know youβre happy, but donβt be a bad winner,β Delia chided gently. βMagnanimity in victory goes a long way.β
βBut baaaabe!β Jessie whined. βIβve never had a victory this magnificent before!β
βYou were great, Pikachu,β Delia murmured. She tickled him under his chin, getting a weak βChaaaβ in response. She made her way back to the side of the battlefield to find Ash, Misty and Jessie waiting. βYou were great too, honey.β
Ash managed a smile as she handed Pikachu to him. βThanks, Mom.β He gasped as he was pulled into a hug.
βThat was such a fun battle!β Delia exclaimed. She loosened her hold just enough to look at him. βI can see why you like this so much.β
βWatch out, Ash,β Misty teased. βYou might just have a new rival on your hands!β
Ash let out a distressed yelp.
βOh no, I donβt have time for that,β Delia assured him with a wave of her hand. As Ash sighed with relief, she cupped his cheek and tilted his head up to look at him. βBut travelling around this past month and battling with you todayβ¦ itβs made me feel a little bit closer to you.β
Ash blushed, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
βAw, Mom,β he mumbled with a grin.
βAhem.β
Ash and Delia turned to see Misty holding out a Cascade badge.
βOh, youβre too kind, really,β Delia replied, blushing as she accepted the badge. Its blue surface seemed to glitter in the sunlight streaming in from the roof. βIβll treasure this, always. Thank you.β
βThatβs how you win a badge fair and square,β Misty teased, shooting a wink Ashβs way.
The Champion rolled his eyes. βYeah, yeah, whatever.β
βArenβt you forgetting something?β
All three turned to see Jessie holding out her hand.
Misty sighed. Jessie had been on the winning team, and she had won a badge fair and square, but the whole situation was still bizarre.
βIβll give you a badge if you explain what allβ¦β She waved her hand between Jessie and Delia. ββ¦this is about.β
βDelia and I dating,β Jessie scoffed with a shrug. βItβs not that complicated.β
βI got that part,β Misty shot back irritatedly, βI justβ¦β She looked from Jessie, standing with her arms crossed, to Ms. Ketchum, who had one hand on Jessieβs hip, to Ash, who looked like he was hoping the floor would open up and swallow him. ββ¦you know what, never mind.β Reaching into her pocket, she took out a second Cascade badge.
βI canβt believe this is happening, butβ¦ you earned this!β
Jessie let out a little cry of joy as Misty put the badge into her hand.
βOh, Deerling, look how pretty it is!β she gushed. βDo you think maybe we could just get the prettiest Gym badges?β
βI donβt see why not,β Delia replied. βWith James to run the restaurant, I can take vacations more often!β
It wasnβt long before Nurse Joyβs tender care had Venomoth, Corsola, Oshawott, Clefairy, Wobbuffet, Gyarados and Pikachu feeling like their old selves again. Delia squeezed Jessieβs hand, murmuring βthatβll be you one day, Smoochumβ as they watched Joy work.
βWe were going to stay and have dinner, Ms. Ketchum,β Misty said. She eyed Jessie reluctantly, but made the offer anyway. ββ¦Youβre welcome to join us.β
βThatβs sweet of you, Misty, but weβve been away long enough,β Delia replied, to both kidsβ relief. βItβs time we headed home. Thank you both so much for such an amazing battle.β She hugged Ash tightly. βDonβt stay away too long, honey.β
βYou know I wonβt, Mom,β Ash replied, blushing. He shot Misty a grin. βIβll be home right after I kick Mistyβs butt in our rematch!β
βThen Iβll see you soon,β Delia murmured. She let go of her son and gave Misty a quick hug and a wink. βTry not to beat him too badly!β
βYes and no,β Delia sighed. βIβm sad my journeyβs over, but I couldnβt be happier about how it went. I made three wonderful new friends, foiled a nasty poacher, and that battle today ββ She clenched her fists in front of her. β β I never felt so alive! I canβt wait to tell Professor Oak and James and Meowth all about it!β She slipped an arm around Jessieβs waist. βIβm so glad you talked me into this.β
Jessie preened. βOh it was nothing, babe, I ββ
She broke off as Delia took hold of her hands.
βThank you for making my dreams come true,β the other woman whispered. Jessieβs heart caught in her throat as she saw tears shining in Deliaβs eyes. βNot just today, but every day weβre together.β
Jessie smiled, warmth blooming in her chest.
βItβs the least I could do,β she replied. Delia deserved more, so much more, for putting up with her, believing in her, loving her. Not to mention all sheβd done for James and Meowth too. Maybe one day β
- but before Jessie could continue the thought, Delia leaned up and pulled her into a tender kiss.
THE END
βOh, I canβt wait to get home to our nice comfy bed!β
