(★) LOUISA CLEMENCE !
The guests to receive seemed endless, and this, Clémence reminded herself, was pivotal. A war of such titanic proportions could only be put to rest by accords of the same magnitude. As such, she ( and the court, for she held them to the same exacting standards by which she herself lived ) were immaculate — Swiss efficiency at its very finest. The princess gave the honored guest a warm, if formal, smile, showing no hint of her evaluation of them. “On behalf of His Majesty the King,” who at that moment lay on his deathbed, oblivious to the world as he had been for the better part of a decade. “I welcome you to the Kingdom of Switzerland.”
–– A deep bow, with practiced elegance more than anything else and grace that flowed through his veins like blood. Brusque and harsh manner, sharp like a cut glass, all thrown out of the window as soon as he left the battlefield and one would never expect him to have stood in the front lines as he gave a chaste, swift kiss to the back of the princess’s hand. “It’s an honor, Your Majesty.” Lips quirking into a smile, dark as his hair, dark as a summer night without the mar of stars in its wake.

(★) TATIANA STANEV !
–– Even her little nook in the castle couldn’t take her mind away from her worries. Nor could dancing (she did so in private, to the music she played in her head) or playing any one of her instruments. She played chess by herself, hoping that the brainpower required to beat her herself would distract her, even for a couple of minutes. But nothing seemed to work. Valentin had left suddenly. He didn’t tell her, probably because he didn’t want her chasing after him into the battlefield, but he didn’t have to. While they were children, she always chose him as her dance partner. Now as adults, she had to pry a promise for a dance out of him. But his absence from the ball gave away his absence at court altogether. Though he wasn’t one for dancing, he was the more sociable (and more charming) of the two Stanev children.
Tatiana found herself at the stables. Small and calloused hands reached out towards the muzzle of her own horse. “I wish to ride you again, my dear,” she spoke softly. “but war has taken a toll on you. On the both of us.” She rested her head against her muzzle, thoughts still buzzing in her head. A vaguely familiar figure stood at the door of the stable. “Hello,” she said, formidable facade long gone.
–– Time and again, he found his feet leading him back to the stables –– it was something he had learnt to accept, ceased resisting, for it was in the company of the gentle-eyed animals that he had learned to let his guard down and actually rest. Of course, in the eyes of others, he might appear as a devilish rogue with a wicked smile plastered on his face almost constantly but that was but a mask, and his true emotions and feelings stayed hidden –– sometimes, on an occasion as rare as a blue moon, it would leak out like the paint in a brush when dipped in water, but never more. So again, today, he found himself walking towards the stable, walking towards the beauty that was his horse, one that had carried him on her back so gallantly through battles after his former one expired in the battlefield ( and oh how devastated he was about his death ) and yet, he found himself greeted with a surprise as he stepped his foot inside the doors. Eyebrow arching up and lips quirking into that devilish smile that was his and his alone, he approached the other figure –– conveniently near Niña –– and whispered his hello at her as he brushed his horse’s mane. She was something familiar, her figure and how the light hugged her body and he couldn’t helped but wonder where he had met her, it was not like him to forget a face. So perhaps, he did saw and met her but not her face for that was the only thing that he couldn’t fetch out of his memory bank. “We’ve met before, haven’t we?”
(★) ALEXEI IVANN ABALYSHEV !
The words that came out of Marcos’ mouth reminded Alexei just how much the other man liked to call him by different nicknames. For a moment he wondered why he’d ever let the man call him Little Egg. As he received a pat on the shoulder, he turned to Marcos and returned the grin. The gesture was familiar, something the older man had done countless times in the past, a gesture of approval, of favour, of solidarity that the prince had to admit he did miss a little bit. “You sound like a proud old man, it is almost terrifying,” he joked. “You still have a few years to go.” They have known each other for five years, and Alexei had been shorter in height then, back when they had first met. He’d gradually began to catch up through the years, and noticing their new height difference now amused the prince somehow. Just as he was about to joke about it, Marcos spoke his next words and for a moment, Alexei had been caught off-guard by the mention of Lukas. It was a slight change in the expression of his eyes, but he had been quick to regain his previous mood, playful, focused on Marcos, pushing the thoughts of the chancellor far back in his mind. This was not the time. “What can I say, I suppose I am good at finding people,” he asked, keeping a light tone. As the next nickname was spoken, Alexei rolled his eyes, though it was all in jest. He gave up trying to object to it years ago. “–– Sashka? Still?” he asked in mock annoyance, though if he had to be honest, he was glad that Marcos still spoke to him in the same affectionate manner. “But I am doing well, thank you for asking. As well as we all can be, anyway. And you?”
–– “I’m doing fine, and you?” He mimicked the younger man in voice as well as accent before laughter poured out of the cavity of his ribs, taking up his face in a brightness that was so rarely seen from him. “Sashka, since when are we so..formal with each other, hm? Oh? Did something happen with Luk––” He noticed the slight changes in the Russian prince’s face as he spoke of the chancellor, something inside him wanting to press further, but instead he stopped himself. His little one would speak to him when he needed to and he always believed in the saying all’s in due time. This was not an exception. Perhaps it was not wise for Marcos to harbor a soft spot for Alexei, after all, despite the current amicable and strong relationship between the two countries, one could never know what would happen in the future. Should their long-standing alliance fall, the Spanish chancellor knew that he’d have the short end of the stick making hard decisions regarding the matter. He shook his head, trying not to let such morbid thoughts enter his head. They’re here in Rome to talk about peace after all, one that would hopefully last until he blew his last breathe. “What’s that? Are you really counting the days until my last breathe? I’m hurt.” Put his hand on his chest in mock sorrow but how could one lie with such a playful smile on their face? It was certainly refreshing, talking to his old friend. Felt as if he could drop all the pretenses –– not that he ever did that, not fully at least –– and relax. For once conversation didn’t feel like a game of chess where he had to contemplate every move, every word that left his lips.
(★) EVELYN LAILA HARCOURT !
She couldn’t stop the blush that rose to her cheeks at his compliments,” I am who I am, Sir, nothing more. I—” she was interrupted by the first droplets of rain, it seemed the storm had caught them finally. She glanced upward, then back to him, a smile on her face and with a slight giggle she asked,” What is it for you Marcos? Depressing, dark, and ominous? Or refreshing and cleansing?” The rain was quickly increasing around them as she waited for his response.
–– The droplets of rain was cool but expected and by no means distracted him from noticing the rosy hue that started to dust her cheeks, yet he spoke nothing of it. Perhaps, if he were a few years younger –– still the strapping young man with tease and wickedness in his eyes and playfulness in his grins –– he would point it out with a smirk and a finger to her chin. But war took that man away and gave back what he was now. He hummed as he thought of his answer, taking off his clothes as he put it over the young lady’s head with his hands. Smile on his face, he asked, “I don’t know, what do you think?”
(★) IRYNA VLADIMIROVNA LISOVSKAYA !
“i am iryna vladimirovna lisovskaya of belarus. a pleasure to meet you, sir marcos.” iryna had heard of the rumors that the palace maids whispered about in the corridors. spanish men were skillful with their words, or so they say, and now that she stood before one, she couldn’t help but smile at how true the rumors came to be. for a brief moment, the belarusian even wondered if the king of spain had made it a law for men to learn how to speak with sugar-coated words. “ten years ago perhaps i could. but today, i highly doubt it.” she laughed, hand waving in the air dismissively. “but i feel adventurous today. how about a quick contest? the first one to the abandoned shrine outside of town shall be reigned the victor. but first, i would need a horse.”
–– Belarus. Smile etched still on his face. Of course he had heard of the country, who hadn’t? How the country ruled with a ruthless sovereign and how rumor had spread that it was the doing of the princess in blue rather than Ilya The Great himself. “Pleasure’s all mine, I assure you, My Lady.” Had heard that they were cold and perhaps that wasn’t quite the right word for them as charismatic, for she held herself with grace and strength. “Ten years ago? Would you still be in your teenage years then?” A deep chuckle escaped his lips as he guided Nina, another hand gesturing for the woman back to the stable. “I am sure the palace’s stable would have a horse to your liking.”

(★) EVELYN LAILA HARCOURT !
“Well, Mr. Cynic. Perhaps I can help you see a little bit of the light. What is it that you’re seeing here that makes you pause on it being a good thing?” She grinned. She really didn’t even know how their conversation had devolved to this, but it was sort of amusing and she figured she could help look for something good for the stranger. Perhaps it would be helpful? She pondered his throwing the question thrown back at her, not actually prepared to have it asked back. What did she think of her opinion and the weight it held? “ I’m afraid my answer is rather boring. I think my opinion has just the right amount of weight. I can offer advice to those important to me, but I don’t have to worry about my opinions being the decision maker for entire countries. I can have my opinions without burden then. I feel many have to change their opinions to what is better for the people they represent, and I don’t have to worry about that.”
–– “Something. Everything.” He shrugged, a deep chuckle slipping past his lips. “Anything.” Eyes scanning back to the party, lids closing for a second behind the mask he’s wearing. He pursed his lips for a second before his dark eyes were casted on her once more. “The party’s nothing more than an attempt to let us guard down. Promises of peace but not one soul in every meeting held so far relented and yielded. Everybody pushing for what they want. It’s all demand and demands. My Lady, believe me, it’s not a pretty sight.” A charming smile, a dark twinkle in his eyes before he shook his head slowly. “And, how do you see it from your eyes, Lady Light?” He understood her answer for he too, felt the same about his. But his position didn’t allow him such luxury. For him whose opinion already held weigh even from the moment he was born, only for such thing to increase when he accepted the position his princess had offered him. For someone like him, there’s no turning back. He could only push forward, no matter how taxing it was for him. “Boring, no. Common, maybe. Not everyone can –– or even want –– handle such pressure and I understand that very well. “
// The Masquerade (Event #1)
“I do not suppose many are aware of the betrothal yet, it is a very recent development, but I thought perhaps Noel might have mentioned it to you.” Her slim shoulders lifted in a small shrug as her eyes cast down to the stone path beneath her feet. Would she come to love Victor in time? Even though it scared her, she suspected the answer was yes. Under normal circumstances that would be seen as a good thing but Mari hardly believed anything about her betrothal fell under the category of ‘normal circumstances’. Victor had made it very clear on several occasions that she would never be the recipient of his love. In fact, he had proclaimed himself of being incapable of even feeling the emotion at all. For Mari that meant she would most likely fall for the man and never get the same affection back in return. As she was most definitely a romantic at heart, the thought was almost crushing. She wasn’t going to let it worry her, though, especially not on a night like tonight. Her verdant gaze refocused on Marcos’ face and she briefly caught a hint of pain in his eyes before he twisted a smile onto his lips. She almost questioned his answer but figured, at the last second, that it was probably not her place. “I truly do hope you have been,” Was all she said as she slipped her arm through his and then began down the dark path through the garden. “I am enjoying my youth as much as any other constantly betrothed or hidden away Princess could be,” She teased as a soft and melodic laugh fell from her lips. “Meaning I have done very little outside of my own chambers other than painting every now and then.”
–– He shrugged his shoulders in return, perhaps Noel himself was still reluctant at the thought of giving his sister’s hand away in marriage. Who knows? Definitely not Marcos. But Mariska was in the age where she should be married already –– as was he, but that was a story in which there would be no beginning and no end. at least that’s what he’d like to think. and he could pass the torch to carry on the La Cerda family name to one of his brothers –– and being betrothed to a king didn’t seem like a bad situation for him. But of course, he had heard of what the king of Serbia was like –– rumors and tall tells from the gossipy ladies in waiting and nobility friends of his –– and he’s afraid that perhaps he might not suit Mariska’s warm personality well. “They did say that opposites attract so hopefully it will work, right?” Offering a wink before his eyes ventured back to the sky above them, the merry music from the party a distance away from them. Grateful at Mariska’s choice to drop the subject of how he had been, he held out his hand and put on his charming smile for her. One that he gave the first time they met, she had been but a blushing maiden –– and perhaps she still was –– but already promised to a man way older than herself. “Then at least, may I interest you in a dance?” Chin motioning to the music that reached out to them like the soft embrace of a nymph, barely there and yet you could feel it gently enveloping you in its arms.
(★) PAOLO DI CALABRIA !
dancing between lords and ladies, kings and queens, rubbing elbows with his fellow soldiers and even those ranked lower than he. the night went surprisingly fast and paolo hardly breathed a word of anything remotely political, sweet mother of god was he grateful for that. and his mask, his mask allowed him to pretend well enough that even he believed he was just dandy with this entire ball. this waste of time. but his smile fell as he collapsed beside another on one of the few remaining unoccupied spots. ‘– exhausting night, you mean. all this fancy footwork is for the birds, signore. never have my feet been stepped on more than tonight. ‘
–– Watching sea of masked people dancing with each other, their flurry of dresses and whispered giggles reached his ears and he couldn’t help but wonder if he could allow himself to join them. But of course, he couldn’t. Had his chance to steal the night away with his quen of hearts and that’s enough for him. Arching an eyebrow as another man threw himself beside him, he chuckled at his remark. “Well for your sake, sir, I hope that it’ll get better soon.” Refraining to use Spanish, a dead giveaway for his identity and that’s the whole point of the ball, was it not? “Could I be sure it’s you if I spot a limping man tomorrow?” A playful smirk played on his face as he held hid goblet up to his lips, taking a generous sip from it as he kept his eyes on the other man.
(★) CATALINA INÉZ DE LA CERDA !
–––––––– as her brother spoke, she only laughed knowing in her heart that he spoke out of affection for her ❝ you’re not fun anymore, brother. since the wa–– ❞ catalina let out a gasp as she stopped herself when she realized what she was about to speak. it was a touchy subject for everyone at home. not only for marcos, but for rafael too and for their mother as well. ❝ we’re just growing up! that’s all! can’t expect us to stay eggs forever. we have to hatch sometimes, marcos! ❞ she quickly changed the subject, eyes looking into his as she smiled. their eye color resembled that of their father’s. ❝ and i have grown up! so the excuse of me being too young won’t work anymore, brother, you know that. i can’t stay a GIRL forever. and how am i supposed to understand complicated things if you keep sheltering me? do you want me to be a simple girl who people think of as stupid? ❞ she arched her eyebrow at him, half truth half teasing hiding in her sentence. but she was also grateful that marcos at least let her had her adventures unlike the brothers of her friends. she turned around and leaned her elbows on the railing. ❝ no. well yes. i’ve been talking to her. i ran into her in town a few nights ago. alone. at night. YOU should have been with her. ❞
–– He sighed an tore his gaze away from her momentarily, hearing the hesitance that was so painfully obvious in her voice. “Don’t worry about it. It’s fine. I’m fine, Catalina. You don’t think your brother’s that weak, do you?” He offered her a warm grin as he ruffled her hair, thoroughly messing with her hair this time. He hated that he made his sister worry like this. Not only was he her older brother, he was also the pillar of the family now. He was supposed to protect and to take care of everyone. Mother, siblings. Arm circling around his sister’s shoulder, he pulled her closer and kissed the top of her head. “Leave the worrying on me, as usual, alright? You just focus on having fun and doing reckless things like you usually do.” A chuckle, warmth in his eyes that soon turned into mirth as his sister spoke again, “I guess that’s true. But you also know that mother would have my head if I just let you run around without any supervision, don’t you? I have to keep some semblance of a pretense that I’m reigning you in or I’m in for an earful.” He paused for a bit, to heave a sign yet again, Marcos seemed to do that a lot around his sister. “Stop bothering her. I can’t just be around her all the time anymore. We broke up, Catalina”
(★) LUKAS VLADIMIR GORCHAKOV !
“Thank you,” he responded, taking the cup and immediately lifting it straight to his lips. Despite not knowing who the man was behind the mask, Lukas was already fond of him. “I’m not usually a fan, no, but… I’m trying something new. While I’m not a fan of secrets either, I like the idea of a masquerade and being able to be someone different.” He took another sip of the wine, eyes glancing around the room. “ — and, well, I suppose it doesn’t help that I can’t dance.”
–– Tilting his head, a shrug of his shoulders as he shared a secret smile with the others, “If you’re that eager to be someone else other than yourself, you must be pretty bad in real life, no? Don’t worry, the same applies to me.” Laced with that characteristically tone that was his and his alone, that made it hard for people to decipher whether ot not he was jesting or being serious. His own glass having been half empty already, he swirled it, eyeing the content before arching an eyebrow, hidden by the mask, at the other. “You can’t dance, really? Never in your life?”

(★) EVELYN LAILA HARCOURT !
“Being positive is not that hard,” she said with a smile,” I find that the way you carry yourself helps bring the same to you. So why not carry yourself with a positive air? It needs no ambassador if we all just changed our thinking a little bit.” She was on a roll, even she knew the fancifulness of her words, and even if she believed in them slightly, she knew it was not as easy as she was making it sound. It didn’t really matter,” And just how much weight do you wish your opinion had?”
–– "Oh believe me. It’s a hard thing to do. At least for a cynic like me.” Arched an eyebrow, etched a smile, winked a wink. All fun and jesting but those were but peppers to the real truth. And as she talked, he found that it’s harder for him to suppress that skeptical side that started to stem out in the corner of his heart. Good girls like her never seen the wretchedness that made him lost faith in humanity he wished he never seen those things either. Good girls like her were good, but you don’t achieve anything by being good that’s why the good people died first even on the battlefield. He shrugged. “Maybe just a bit more. And how much do you wish yours have?”
(★) ALEXEI IVANN ABALYSHEV !
“No one else calls me by that name. No one has ever called me by that name besides you,” he said, an expression of mock annoyance on his face, though he couldn’t keep it on for very long, a small smile slowly making its way to his lips. “I would never allow them to anyway, and –– just what do you mean by that? I believe I have grown significantly.” He laughed. “Don’t tell me you still see a sixteen year-old when you look at me.” Years have passed, but talking to Marcos always brought Alexei back, made him feel a little younger, a little more boyish, especially when the man brought out the nicknames, or said things to remind the prince of the time he spent his influence. He was always reminded of their shared experiences, the experiences the older man had encouraged him to seek out, the experiences he thoroughly enjoyed, those that ultimately shaped a part of what he was today, whether it was for good or for worse. As Marcos brought up the prospect of falling in love for the night, he let out a small chuckle at the familiarity of the suggestion. “Perhaps. You make it sound more romantic than it is,” he said. “And what about you? Has anyone in the party caught your eye yet?”
–– A chuckle. “So I’m the only one allowed to call you by such an affectionate nickname? I’m honored, Prince, really am.” A mock expression on his face, hand on his chest to emphasize it. To be quite honest, try as he might but Marcos could never see him as anything other that the sixteen years old boy he first met. His antics and childish disposition that somehow still persisted. And he was glad that it did for when they talked to each other, he felt as if time stood still and he was not the man he was now. The wretched man he’s now. Wasn’t the best person five years ago, wasn’t even one to begin with, but at least not this. He laughed alongside the other guy, shaking his head a bit. Romantic. He sure as hell wasn’t that. Not after a botched up attempt at something that actually mattered for him. “Plenty of people caught my eyes tonight. You know more than anyone else my eyes wander around, kiddo.” Patted the other’s cheek a bit, something so brazen to do, but they were that close anyway. “How about you? Or are you perhaps already in love with someone?”
