While his initial debut in the Legends ZA trailer may have screamed "Tumblr Sexyman", there actually are some interesting layers into how Corbeau's character might be inspired by Japanese folklore and Shintoism.

Disclaimer: At the time of writing this I have only just beat Corbeau's boss fight, and have yet to finish the game. So this may be updated later on, and be mindful of sharing spoilers!

It's easy to see that between Bashou (Hun) and Buson (Attila), the one with more reservations about child murder, noting in Japanese that Kenta's "too young" before they try to scare him and Marina off so they don't interfere (but by the end, with frequent clashes, they're both still down with child murder, they're a lot darker and more sinister than the comic relief TRio are...), the dub softened Attila even more with giving him a childhood love of Caterpie, etc. They flanderized them a bit, but the foundation was still always there.

The Pokemon thing that got me to bring this all up! Both of his Pokemon aren't naturally the way they are, Muk (Betobeton) lost its sense of smell from all the garbage and sludge and impurities around it (becoming desensitized to filth/impurity) and Skarmory (Aiarmed) isn't tough as steel from birth or, well, hatching, but its skin is scraped by the thorny nests it grows up until it'a hard as steel.

So, the contrast of external roughness and corruption with a softer innate nature...

But that's exactly the sort of person that would make a loyal Team Rocket member, the Rockets whose backstories we do know in detail tend to be quite tragic, lile the TRio...

The sorts of things the Boss says in the Pokemon Masters game also easily show how persuasive and appealing he might be to the weak and desperate... he's well aware of the type he fills his ranks with and knows just how to win them over! How sympathetic, how affable, how charming, how disarming...
