The realization that we are alone…
Makena no.9, oil on wood, 2013
Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is one of those places in Iceland that you don’t find in many of the brochures, but that’s one of the reasons it’s all that much more magical when you get there.
There is a little grassy walking trail along the side of the canyon, with dramatic views to the floor that would make even the most experienced climbers dizzy. The canyon is 100m tall and 2km long, making for a nice little walk once you get there. You can also hike along the floor of the canyon, although be prepared to wade through glacial rivers for that adventure! The mossy floor with trails that seemingly lead into an abyss, and the blue waters with the occasional waterfall make you feel like you are surrounded by fairies and trolls (and ask any Icelander, you just may be!). The best part though is solitude of this place is authentically Icelandic.

Bo Bartlett, Oligarchy, 2016, oil on linen, 120 x 88
The next Steven Assael figure painting workshop will be held in his Manhattan studio this coming May.
Five days, Tuesday, May 16 through Saturday, May 20, 2017, 10:00 to 5:00 daily.
Steven will discuss both an analytical and emotive approach to painting the human figure, with an emphasis on color and value relationships in a related atmosphere. The class will consist of one single or perhaps multiple poses. The development of formthrough observation and interpretation of plane shifts that are projecting and receding from the eye will be stressed. Aspects of anatomy, proportion and movement will be discussed along with the development of an Alla Prima technique that involves both scumbling and glazing.
The course will include lectures, demo’s and critiques on a daily basis. The group will be small in number, which will ensure plenty of interaction at your easel.
The fee is $1025.00; a deposit of $525.00 will hold your place in the class and the $500.00 balance will be due first day of class. All model fees are included.
