Also a bit of a change up, she actually refers to him by his first name, Eric. But overall Iâm excited about this new story and hope yâall enjoy!!!

It was a day like any other for Cordelia Alexander, or Delia as she was mostly known as. It was the beginning of summer, and she and her daughter had just left the softball field. Currently they were doing a quick run to the Piggly Wiggly to grab a few groceries before they headed home. âMama, can I get some more grapes?,â ten year old Lainey asked. âLainey Beth you are gonna turn into a grape,â she chuckled in response. âIs that a yes?,â Lainey smiled. âYes, of course you can have some grapes baby,â Delia replied before her little girl snatched up a bag and placed them in the cart.
âWhatcha thinkinâ for supper LB?,â she then asked. âItâs Tuesday, Mama. You already know,â Lainey told her. âTaco Tuesday?,â she questioned knowingly as Lainey nodded her head enthusiastically. âAlright then. Next question is what kind of tacos?,â Delia continued as she grabbed some tomatoes and lettuce. âChicken for sure,â she said as she helped her mom bag up the produce. They made their way through the store grabbing the ingredients along with a few other odds and ends before ending up at the meat coolers.
Delia was so involved in finding a decent pack of chicken tenders she didnât see who had happened upon the two of them. âYou want some burgers tomorrow Lainey?,â she asked distractedly. âMama,â Lainey whispered garnering all of her motherâs attention. âWhoâs that man staring at us?,â she asked. When Delia looked up she was pinned in place with those eyes⊠The eyes like the ocean, the same eyes her daughter had. âUm⊠Iâ,â she stammered. âHe looks like me. Is thatâŠ,â Lainey trailed off.
Lainey had asked about her father in recent years and Delia hadnât lied about what happened. She remembered it like it was yesterday. It was right after graduation. Sheâd called and told him that she needed to see him, and had something important to tell him. Delia tried to keep her voice steady as she held the positive pregnancy test in her hand. âThatâs good darlinâ because I got somethinâ I need to tell you too,â heâd replied. She met him down at the creek. It was the their favorite spot since they were children. When she got there he embraced her before placing a kiss on her lips.
âEric Iâ,â she wavered. âI enlisted,â he blurted out. âYou what?,â Delia asked in shock. âI enlisted Dilly,â he repeated, and she felt like she was losing her mind. âBut⊠but,â she stammered. âI know itâs short notice,â he said. âShort notice? You didnât even discuss this with me,â she said becoming frantic. âI know darlinâ. Itâs just.. I thought itâd be easier this way. I go for basic week after next then Iâll be gone. I just feel like I have to, you know? My dad and grandpa both enlisted,â he continued. âWhat about me? Us?,â Cordelia asked him. âDonât feel right askinâ you to wait. Doesnât seem fair. Y- you should go on and live your life Dilly. Forget about me,â he told her. âYouâre fuckinâ kiddinâ me. Please tell me youâre jokinâ,â she yelled.
He moved to touch her shoulder and she move out of his reach like his touch might burn her. âYou promised me youâd always love me. Youâre a liar Eric Syverson,â Delia said feeling her lip quiver. At that point she turned and walked away and let the tears fall freely. He didnât ask what she had to tell him so she didnât offer. All those years ago, Delia figured if he didnât want her anymore, he surely wouldnât want a baby, and sheâd just figure it out on her own. Now standing here with his glassy eyes going from her to their daughter, it was almost too much to bear, so she threw the ground beef into the cart and bolted.
When sheâs loading the groceries into the back hatch of her Traverse Lainey speaks. âMama, was that my dad in there?,â she asked, painfully wise beyond her years. âYeah baby it was. Iâ honestly I dunno how we hadnât run into him before now or had some nosey little old bitty go tattling to him about how much yâall look alike,â Delia replied honestly. âItâs okay, Mama. Iâ I donât think Iâm ready to meet him today anyway. Can I get in the car?,â she asked her mom. âYeah, of course,â Delia said, feeling unbelievably overwhelmed. She heaved the case of gatorades and water in before closing the hatch and turning to put the buggy into the return.
Delia got quite the start when she realized Eric was standing right there waiting. âWhy didnât you tell me?,â he asked. Delia blows a raspberry through her lips, not ready to have the conversation thatâs been ten years in the making. âWhen was I supposed to tell you Eric? When you told me you were deploying ooooor when you told me to move on with my life? Because itâs kinda hard to work in, âBy the way I know you donât want me anymore, but my birth control failed and now Iâm pregnant,â amongst all that,â she huffed. He looked down at the ground and Delia swears she sees a tear fall as he shakes his head.
âYou know I heard you had a kid, but when I did I figured youâd done what I said. Went on and found a good man, had a family. I didnât realize she was mine. If⊠if Iâd knownââ he said before she cut him off. âYou wouldâve stayed with me out of pity? Like thatâs so much better,â Delia said, venom dripping from her voice. She knew heâd hurt her, hell sheâd been in therapy over the years to cope with everything, but what she didnât realize was how bad it actually still hurt. âYouâre wrong,â he replied softly. âHow? How am I wrong? You didnât love me anymore. Youâ,â she carried on when his eyes came alight with anger. âI NEVER stopped lovinâ you Dilly. I didnât want to leave you behind, but I was just a big dumb fuckinâ idiot. Didnât have a damn thing goinâ for me. I wanted better for you. As soon as I left, I knew Iâd fucked up. Leavinâ you behind was the worst mistake of my life, and now itâs just that much worse,â he said desperately as his chest heaved.
âDonât call me that, and thereâs no wayâŠâ Delia said, feeling a tightness in her throat. âNo way what? That I still love you? That every moment of every day all I can think about is beinâ with you?,â he said, pained expression etching his features. âItâs been ten years Eric. People change. Iâm not⊠Iâm not who I used to be, and Iâm sure you arenât either,â Delia replied. Her heart feels like itâs in her throat and in her stomach all at the same time. Itâs all sheâs ever wanted to hear from him, but itâs just far, far too late. Thereâs no way he could actually still love her.
âWhat happened when you told your parents?,â he asked. âThey put me out. I went to school, got my RN, came back here, started working at the local walk-in clinic, and got a little apartment for Lainey and me. We have a house now, but in the early years I couldnât afford one,â she shrugged. Delia caught him grimace. âThey put you and Lainey out? Laineyâs her name?,â he asked. âLainey Beth Alexander, and yeah. They put me out when I was still pregnant. You know how they are. They never gave a shit about me anyway. They werenât about to start then,â Delia replied.
âYou go have her all alone too?,â he asked. âI had my best friend Patrice with me. Iâd say I traumatized her, but sheâs got three kids of her own now so I guess not. She was there for me whenâ Through it all. Still is,â she told him. âDilly I am so sorry. I shouldâve been there,â he said, voice cracking. âYou didnât know, and Iâm not upset about it,â she said, surprising him. Sheâd always been so forgiving, even when people didnât deserve it. He shook his head. âI am. I shouldâve never left you behind, a- and now Iâve missed so much with you⊠with Lainey. Can I meet her?,â he then asked. âSheâs not ready Eric,â Delia let him know. He nodded. âShe knew didnât she?,â he asked. âYeah, and I canât lie to her. I never have,â she replied.
âDoes she hate me?,â he asked softly. âI wouldnât do that,â Delia snapped. âI know, but still. If I were her, Iâd hate me,â Eric said softly. âShe doesnât understand why I didnât tell you, but sheâs just a child. Sheâs never faced heartbreak. If anyone, sheâs likely gonna be angry with me before itâs over. I can handle it,â Delia said with certainty. âYou look good Dilly,â he then tells her. Cordelia thinks about how she looks right now. Sheâs got her long, dark brown hair pulled up in a ponytail, definitely needing to be washed. Sheâd forgone her contacts today and had on her glasses. Her dark green eyes likely looked as tired as she felt since she had on minimal makeup. Sheâd woke up late, and was short on time. Then she was still in her scrubs, having gone from the clinic straight to the softball field to meet Patrice and her husband Elijah with all the kids for their games. She was sweaty, and at least twenty pounds heavier than the last time they saw each other, though she was still smaller than Eric. Then she looked up at him.
Really it was him who looked good. His soft curls were buzzed off, but he was sporting a thick beard that made him look like such a man it should be illegal. He looked bigger than she remembered too. Definitely so much thicker than heâd been when they were eighteen. Delia pushed the thoughts away. âThanks,â she mumbled, not really meeting his eye. She couldnât afford to get flustered. She couldnât fall back into those old feelings, the ones sheâd been harboring all of these years. She couldnât handle having her heart broken by him a second time. âCan I get your number so we can keep in touch about Lainey?,â Eric then asked her. âSure, whereâs your phone?,â she asked. He pulled it out of his pocket and handed it to her. Delia took the phone with shaky hands and added her number. âThere you go,â she said as she handed it back to him. âThanks,â he replied.
He took her in, wanting to wrap her up in his arms so badly. It had been so long and yet it felt like time had hardly passed. She was just as beautiful as ever, but looked just as broken as the day heâd told her he had enlisted. Now knowing it wasnât only the loss of him sheâd been mourning killed him. âDillyâ,â he said, moving closer. âPlease donât,â she said holding her hands up. He nodded lightly before backing away, although his every instinct screamed at him not to. âI guess Iâll be seeinâ you around then,â he replied dumbly. âYeahâŠ,â Delia trailed off. She stood there stunned for a moment before getting in the car and putting it in reverse, and for the second time, Eric Syverson watched his whole life just walk away. But this time things were different. HE was different. He wanted to know his daughter, to be with the woman he loved.
âFuck,â he mumbled to himself while pulling out his phone, dialing the one person he could always call on. âHey, Walt. You home?,â he asked.
