So the new pictures released for Mevius: Final Fantasy (iOS/Android though supposedly a “console-style” game) shows a dude in, shall we say, an outfit familiar to this blog… except it’s usually worn on female characters.
But that’s okay, I mean, I’m sure the reactions will be like “oh it’s just fantasy”, “he’s confident and doesn’t need real armour”, “it’s stylized”, “he chose to dress like that”… right?

So Final Fantasy finally (all puns intended) decided to fully embrace its female-gazey nature and released initial promo pics with a male character not being cool and stoic, but under-dressed, sexy and vulnerable? Me like!
Aaaaand some gamers’ knee-jerk reaction is “Eeew, how is that supposed to be a man?! I’m never playing this!”? Me no like. …But all the same, I’m not particularly surprised either. Sigh.
While screencapping the worst comments from that forum thread, I also noticed lots of other posts being like "I don’t mind sexy male armor, BUT this particular one is just a shitty design, period.", which is an argument far removed from the reality of current game industry. The thing is, we’re waaaaay past the “badly designed sexy female armor” quota, so there’s lots of “badly designed sexy male armor” quota to meet. And until balance of the two is restored, I don’t really think anyone is in the position to request male sexyness to be up to some arbitrary design quality standard.
I’ll also hold my final judgement of the whole game’s art direction until we get to see female characters for comparison. After all, FF titles provided us with some major Female Armor Bingo material before.

Sevenstyle has long been called the shitty ””otaku journalism”” blog that one visits when one feels that Sankaku Complex is just too high-class for them. I could spend ages harvesting the ridiculousness (holy shit for someone who claims to hate Free!, Seven sure posts a lot about Free!) but here are some highlights from recent entries in the tag.
I really like the attempt at a pseudo-intellectual writing style combined with a juvenile 9th-graders attempt at sick burns. It really gives the site its own voice. ‘A guidebook on Free!? I bet it’s a guide about BEIN GAY. HA that was a great burn. I better write it down.’
Terribliness of this text aside (although interesting to know that Seven considers himself the expert on how gay men or men in general are supposed to act), that’s not even an image from Free!. It’s from the prequel novel High-Speed where everyone is a kid. (Also re:this dumb male otaku opinion that the Free boys ‘arent manly’ I just want to remind everyone about this post)

This blog lives! I'm so happy.
This blog lives when there are submissions/if I see something I think is relevant to the theme.It’s mostly dead but I’m keeping it up as a testament to that historic moment when a bunch of shitty nerds got mad about a show that wasn’t made for them, because for as long as I live it’s never going to not be funny or depressing.
EDIT= There's still season 2 which could potentially bring some fresh whining but I think most people have thankfully matured to the point where they realized that the existence of a show they don't like isn't going to kill them, and that anime companies are going to continue shitting out multiple versions of My Little Sister Can't Possibly Be This Horny!!-type dreck every season regardless of how many shows not aimed at them exist.
Isn’t it amazing how a group of adult men can completely take over a show meant for little girls; making it virtually impossible to search or do anything related to the show without being exposed to over-sexualized, misogynistic, sexist crap, and they get a documentary that praises them for stepping outside of their perceived gender roles? Meanwhile 45% of the gaming community is comprised of women and I get dick pics and rape threats if I try and go on xbox live.
I think this is kind of relevant to the blog content; and I feel like the female following for anime is even greater than the female following for games yet its a demographic constantly belittled, shit on and undervalued. It's cool that men were able to make their own space in a show meant for little girls, it's a lot less cool that they pretty much overtook the entire space for little girls and get really entitled and shitty whenever anyone implies they arent the true demographic and shouldnt expect the creators to constantly cater to them. Meanwhile when women try to make their own space in just about anything the nerdrage comes down with a vengeance because how dare women have something we can't be part of. Not to mention women have actually been part of the anime fan following for ages; hell most of the ones i know have been fans for decades and certainly a lot longer than all the little neckbeard shitnerds screaming about 'women ruining anime' when most of them probably aren't even old enough to remember when VHS fansubs were a thing. -modT

When someone told Taylor about that, he went and said that Free! only got those sales because of a few crazy fans, like AKB. And then he said "High sales of free prove my point that the industry will start to curve to please women like everything else in life does and we men will have nothing left." I honestly kinda was hoping he was a troll, but he's just too dedicated...
Some people just hate being wrong and will be like NO BUT YOU SEE- no matter what proof they get to the contrary. It’s pathetic, really. (Also LMFAO the only reason AKB sells is because of the idiots that buy a million copies to get the tickets to the handshaking events. These Free dvds didnt come with any freebies like that, there was no reason to buy more than one copy, unlike things like AKB which pretty much require you to buy multiples.) How exactly does people buying a show ‘prove that the industry is catering to them’? It only proves that theres a market (the existence of which was continuously denied) that should be catered to. This is basic shit here.…Also do these people not realize that most of the people that bought Free! also bought SnK, therefore supporting it as well…? And loads of other unisex anime besides that…? Is Free’s high sales supposed to cancel out all the sales for everything else? Thinking logically is too difficult for such people though, it’s a shame, but it’s not unexpected. -modT

Women not buying anime---oh wait
So, Free! is now winding down and will finish up next week, and the sales data of the first volume is out. So far it's sold approximately 25700 units in its first week alone. Only Dragon Ball Z Kai outsold it in that week. In other words, Free! has with its first volume alone sold better than both Hyouka (apparently averaging 10,000 per volume) and Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai (averaging 15,000). Also, Uta no Prince-sama's first volume sold over 27000, and Shingeki no Kyojin over 75000. Obviously, SnK is a seinen series but given the enormous popularity of SnK with female anime fans (who have also been targeted a lot in advertising recently, ridiculous bodypillows anyone) it wouldnt have reached that amount of copies without female fans buying it too.
But, you know. Women dont buy anime and its a man-only thing that women invaded (because obviously, if women like anything it's 'invading') only very recently. These sales numbers were fabricated because theres no way Free! would ever be successful because women only buy makeup and clothes and dont have hobbies and making anything with women in mind instead of men is financial suicide. (This is sarcasm and I hope all the people whinging about how stupid KyoAni were for taking such a 'giant financial risk' are enjoying the taste of their hats right now.) -modT

Is there 'related fuckery'? I think Meganebu is a different beast; its Studio Deen after all, and they've made fangirl-flavoured anime for ages. (They also have a tendency to suck, so I'm not particularly excited for Meganebu.) Free's massive backlash was mostly due to it being KyoAni.But I'm sure there will be people saying that its signalling the end times and that one day every single anime will be about hot guys, because apparently thats the only kind of anime girls like, or some nonsense.
