It's a pretty hard question to answer haha

The actual concept for PAFL was brewing for a long while. The story and characters went through a lot of revisions over the years - all before I even made the first video in the series.

I think publicly putting the project in motion was what forced me to solidify how the story would progress and what the characters would be like.

When I just started it, the only things that were set in stone were the events of PAFL and Yura going to the Zone after Katya's capture. But by Punch it Punk, I've roughly laid out the plan for the whole rest of the story.

There have been some slight deviations since then. I have given more significance to certain secondary characters and have compeltely changed the ending. Plus, some details have - and will be - tweaked as the series goes on, because of course 19 year old me wouldn't think everything through perfectly.

I think the most important principles for me are:

Reference real people instead of other media. I mean, of course your characters will inevitably fall into certain tropes and be inspired by other characters you enjoy. But it's always very apparent when a character is based on JUST that. And I know, because I myself was guilty of that in my teenage years. In general, it's good to try and think how similar people in your life would react to certain situations. Your OCs can still be fun anime people, but giving them that bit of extra grounding will make them much more compelling and "real".

Remember the character's environment. Making characters first and thinking about their environment second was also something I used to be guilty of. This kinda ties back to realism, but it can apply to fantastical settings too. Everyone is a product of their environment, and thinking about how it could influence them on a deeper level can drastically improve your writing!

These seem like obvious points, but they help add a ton of little things that expand the characters and story in actually meaningful ways, as opposed to just adding on cute little trivia.

Sanya is probably the best example of a character that has improved a ton over the years because of me thinking more carefully about how her environment would realistically reflect on her worldview, skills, and personality.

Yeah, on a surface level she's pretty easy to define through standard anime tropes. She absolutely is a tsundere tomboy with gap moe nerdiness. But it's the parts of her personality that have emerged as a result of growing up in isolation, of being part of an extremely dangerous business that make her more than just that set of buzzwords (hopefully, at least).

That's not to say tropes are bad, though: Temnova is as tropetastic as they get and she's pretty damn popular. But there's a reason she's not part of the main cast. She works best as a cool side character, but she'd be jarring if she was treated the same way as someone more down-to-earth like Sergei.
