Youâre acting like groups of people are racialized the same everywhere in the world, and youâre acting like the dominant culture in America that very much forces many racial/ethnic/cultural groups to assimilate doesnât have power over other cultures and aspects of those cultures in America. A Japanese person has a completely different experience in America as they do in Japan. Also if a white person wore a kimono in America theyâd probably be revered as some fashion icon, while in Japan, itâs central to many traditions. My mom didnât dress my sisters up in yukatas and kimonos when we were kids because it was a trendy thing to do, she did it because it was important to her and her culture, but when SHE wore them when she was younger in America, she was beaten up and made fun of. Yet a white person can do that here and not be made fun of or called stereotypical or be looked down upon. Not to mention youâre acting like there isnât a time and place to wear kimonos. You can do that in Japan because kimonos and other aspects of Japanese culture cannot be appropriated in Japan, since itâs Japan. And the culture is overwhelmingly Japanese. Itâs actually a very simple concept. You, on the other hand, are speaking over marginalized groups in America, who all experience backlash and hate for embracing aspects of their culture, yet people who arenât from those cultures take those things and devalue those things and clearly show a lack of understanding and respect for those cultures. This post is exhausting I need to take a nap.
