The white marble bathing chamber in the Sultan’s palace was gigantic, and Alanna shivered, feeling so very out of place with her dirty limbs and face, bare feet, and the ragged, threadbare dress that was far too tattered and torn to even sufficiently protect her modesty.

She had been caught stealing in the marketplace–only trying to take an apple so her stomach would stop feeling like an empty, gaping pit; she hadn’t eaten since Yadira had thrown her out–and the city guard had brought her before the Sultan to determine her fate.

She’d thought she was going to lose her life. Or her hand, as the penalty for thieving in Agrabah seemed to be.

She was terrified.

But instead of punishing her…the Sultan had summoned a servant and told the woman to take Alanna to get cleaned up and provide her with new clothing.

The poor child couldn’t have been older than her own daughter, dirty from head to toe and clearly starving--the stolen apple was proof enough of that. Innocence and desperation did not make her a hardened criminal deserving of such a heavy penalty. She needed a bath and decent clothes. Kindness.

Luckily, her husband had agreed and sent the girl here with one of her handmaids, who had told her to wait while she made preparations.

The queen, having wanted to see and aid her herself, was dressed as a servant. The basket she carried held  fresh if simple clothing, as well as ointments for her hair and skin to wash away the grime of the street.
