sidelines - luke patterson x reader ( chapter four: memory )
summary; after y/n gets killed, she finds herself in someplace familiar, with familiar people, but something’s off, she doesn’t remember how she died.
part one | part two | part three | part five
place unknown, time unknown
a faint throbbing feeling lurked in the back of her head as her eyes opened, yet she didn’t see anything. she was in a dark room in complete silence, she couldn’t even hear herself think. y/n slowly stands up, nearly falling back down in the process.
y/n let out a silent gasp. now or never was quietly playing in the distance, as her body subconsciously moved towards the sound. soon, screams followed. y/n moved faster and soon she was running before she fell. down. down. down.
“whoa! how did we get back here?”
y/n’s body eventually stopped falling as she landed on her side on the cold, hard floor.
a high pitch scream sounded from her left, followed by three slightly lower pitched ones, eventually the first voice trailed off and was no longer in ear shot.
“boys, what’s going on?” y/n recognised that voice from anywhere.
“luke.” she muttered as she tried her best to roll over so she was on her back.
“wh- y/n…” the voice said again. “no way.”
y/n opened her eyes and wobbled as she tried to get back on her feet and then she was met face to face with him.
he looked exactly the same as the day he died. wait- he’s dead? how can she see him?
“y/n, oh my god. it’s you.” luke practically threw his body into her embrace, cradling her body in his strong arms. y/n wasted no time and quickly hugged back. "luke?“ y/n muttered, enjoying the nostalgic feeling of his body close to hers. "you’re meant to be dead? why aren’t you dead?”
luke looked back at alex and then at reggie. “wait- reggie? alex? what’s going on?!”
“y/n,” luke reluctantly pulled his body away from y/n’s. “we are dead. the question is, why are you here?”
“i-” y/n thought long and hard. “i don’t know.”
“that makes the two of us.” luke chuckles as he slowly intertwined their fingers. “i’ve really missed you.”
“you’re actually here, right? i’m not going crazy, please tell i’m not crazy.” y/n begged.
luke raised his hands from her grip and placed both of them on her face and looked her dead in the eye. “you’re not crazy.”
y/n smiled as tears welled up in her eyes, luke wiping them before they could drop.
“and, oh my god, alex, reggie…” y/n ran over to her boys. she pulled reggie into a bone crushing hug, as he hugged back with just as much force.
“move over, reginald, it’s my time to hug our girl!” alex’s tall frame picked up y/n and spun her around, making her let out a light laugh. “i’ve missed you!”
“and i’ve missed you!” she smiled, as she pulled the other two boys into a group hug, as footsteps approached, making the four of them look up. y/n gripped onto luke’s hand as the band moved from the garage to outside.
“holy crap! how did we do that?!” reggie looks around in shock.
“we’re ghosts, genius.” alex sighs. “remember, hot dog.”
“god, don’t remind me of that.” y/n froze up at the though of that day, which happened exactly a year ago. well, she thought it was a year ago, but frankly she wasn’t sure.
“are you still here…” a feminine voice called from inside the garage. they could hear her let out a shaky breath. “whatever you are?”
“who’s she?” y/n looked to the boys for answers, but they knew even less than she did. “great…”
“i know i saw something.” the band emitted back to the garage, just behind the girl. “i’m not crazy.”
“well, we’re all a little crazy.” luke shrugged as the girl turned around in shock.
“luke, jes-” y/n began but was swiftly cut off by the girl holding up a cross and screaming, very, very loudly once again.
“oh my god!” the group winced. “please stop screaming!”
everything was happening so fast and no one could process anything that was happening, especially y/n. she didn’t even know if she was alive or not.
eventually, the girl closed her mouth and stood still like a statue. “who are you, and what are you doing in my mom’s studio?”
“your mom’s studio?” luke laughed as y/n looked around. it was definitely the same studio, but it looked drastically different.
luke walked towards the girl, but she just moved the cross closer to him, making luke take a step back. “this is our studio. trust me, my…” luke slid across the piano, trying his best to avoid the girl and her wooden cross, making y/n stifle a laugh. “the grand piano is new, and… and… and…” then luke laid his eyes on his sofa before giggling in pure wonder. “my couch!” he flopped onto it and sighed happily before looking up at a guitar which sat by his head. “that is definitely not my six-string.” he looked up at the ceiling which had chairs strung like fairy lights. it was weird, but it definitely gave the place character. luke stood back up and cautiously walked past the girl. “can you give me just one second? just… give me a second. thank you.”
luke walked over to y/n, reggie and alex who just stood there, processing the interaction they just witnessed. “guys, what is going on? how did she get her stuff in here so fast?”
“maybe… maybe she’s a witch. there’s chairs floating on the ceiling.” reggie suggested.
“okay, there is no such thing as witches.” alex explained as reggie raised his eyebrow.
“you sure? i used to think there was no such things as ghosts.” reggie took a step closer to the group.
“that’s fair.” alex nodded his head.
“okay, so we’re going with witch?” luke questioned, facing his bandmates.
“no!” alex hit luke’s arm. “we are not going with witch. she’s not a witch.”
“i agree with alex,” y/n spoke up. “i think she’s an ordinary girl who just happens to see ghosts. well- okay, maybe not ordinary.”
“okay, look. she’s just scared.” y/n looked back at the girl who was standing there, and alex was right, she looked terrified. y/n flashed her a charming smile, hoping to calm her nerves, and for a second, it looked like it worked. “okay. let someone with a softer touch handle this.”
“like y/n?” luke asked, looking at the girl.
“no, like-” alex shook his head as reggie started speaking.
“i agree, y/n’s great in situations like these!” reggie smiled.
“aw, nice to know i’m great at talking to terrified girls about how my three best friends are ghosts and that they mean no harm.” y/n took a deep breath and walked past the boys to the girl.
“hey, i know you’re kind of freaked out right now, trust me, i am too. i have absolutely no clue what’s going on, but lets figure it out to together and start over. hi, i’m y/n, and these are my bandmates, luke, alex and reggie.” y/n pointed to each boy individually.
“hi, i’m reggie!” he smiled and waved at her.
“dude, y/n/n, just said that.” luke lightly shoved him.
“oh, right.” y/n turned back around to the girl.
“we’re in a band called sunset curve.” luke took a step closer.
“tell your friends!” y/n missed hearing reggie saying that.
the girl still had her defences up, but y/n could tell that she didn’t mean any harm. she pushed the cross up to y/n’s body, only for it to go through her.
“oh my gosh!” she looked at the cross and then back to y/n. “how did you do that?”
“i’m dead.” the realisation dawned on y/n. “oh my god, i’m dead.”
“you’re dead?” luke’s voice cracked slightly. “how?”
“i guess that explains why she can touch us.” alex looked just confused as everyone else.
“last night was supposed to be a really big night for us.” luke spoke, trying to put all the pieces together. “it was gonna change our lives.”
“i’m, uh… pretty sure it did.” alex whispered.
“luke, you guys have been dead for a whole year.” y/n slowly turned to the boys.
“what?!” the three other boys yelled in unison.
“this is freaking me out.” the girl got out something from her pocket, holding the cross back up.
“what is that? what are you doing?” luke pointed to it.
“it’s my phone.” she sighed. “no! stop talking to them. they aren’t real. there’s no such thing as cute ghosts.
"oh, think we’re cute?” y/n smiled and gave her a charming, warm smile.
she looked up at the ghosts and continued typing on her phone, as alex leaned over. “who you calling?”
“i’m googling sunset swerve.” she said as if it was the most obvious thing ever.
“sunset curve!” the four corrected.
“whoa.” she looked down at her phone as saw a picture of the four ghosts, and someone else who seemed faintly familiar. “there is a sunset curve. you did die. but not last night. twenty-five years ago?”
“what? no. no, no, no. th-th-that’s impossible.” reggie stuttered out, in full denial. “after we floated out of the ambulance all we did was go to that weird, dark room where alex cried.”
“well…” alex’s voice went extremely high pitched. “i don’t think… i think we were all pretty upset. okay.”
“but that was just for like an hour.” luke was trying to put the pieces together. “we just showed up here.”
“look. i’m just telling you what my phone says.” she held up the phone. “see? you died in 1995. when you were seventeen. except… y/n.”
“does it say how i died?” y/n stood next to the girl and read over her shoulder and felt her face go pale, she didn’t even think that was possible since she was basically just air at this point. “no way.”
y/n slowly backed up and sat on top of the grand piano.
“what does it say?!” luke questioned, moving closer, but y/n couldn’t find herself to say anything.
“it says,” the girl lowered her cross and began to read. “‘y/n l/n was full of potential, but she unfortunately died on the one year anniversary of her bandmate’s death. she had a drug overdose, fell and hit her head, resulting in her being rushed to the hospital by her one remaining band member, but it was too late.’ ”
an uncomfortable silence fell between them all.
“that can’t be right.” luke awkwardly chuckles. “please, someone tell me that’s not right.”
“it’s what it says, i’m sorry, okay?” the girl with glasses put down the cross next to y/n.
y/n felt like an idiot. no, she didn’t die by eating a poisoned hot dog like the boys, but she did something on purpose. she purposely was trying to kill herself. and if she didn’t hit her head, then maybe she would still be alive, they could of saved her in time. y/n tried to accept that’s how she died, but something still felt off, something she didn’t quite understand.
“i still don’t know why i don’t remember.” y/n looked at her shoes, realising she was wearing high heels. she never wore high heels, and then she took a good look at her clothes. it look like she came straight out of a business meeting. “and why am i wearing these? and it’s been twenty five years for you guys, and twenty four for me? it’s 2020?” she had a thousand questions, but no answers.
“so, this is the future?” reggie asked, slightly intrigued.
“wait. so… so, it has been twenty five years.” alex begins to yell in shock. “i have been crying for twenty five years?! how is that possible?!”
“well, you’re a very emotional person.” reggie reassures.
“i am not!” alex tries to look at luke for back-up, but he just shakes his head.
“thought you were afraid to come out here.” a voice says from behind luke, alex and reggie. it’s a small boy, obviously related to the un-named girl. “you talking to your ghost friend? how does he look? is he hideous?”
“he can see you.” alex points to his friend.
“no, he can’t.” the brunette girl looks to reggie, as y/n stays silent, still taking in all the new information she had gained.
“what?” the small boy looks side to side.
“uh…” she tries to act natural. “what do you want?”
“a normal sister, for starters.” he crosses his arms. y/n lets out a slight chuckle, glad that her spirits were lifted, even if it was just for a moment. “stop being weird and come eat.” and with that being said, her little brother turns and walks away.
luke, reggie and alex all give her an amused look. “he couldn’t see you.”
“yeah. i mean, that’s…” alex murmurs. “usually how ghosts work.” reggie makes a sound of agreement.
she walks past the three ghosts as y/n decided to join her other band members. the girl in the yellow sweater turns back around and sighs. “look, i’m very sorry for what happened to you guys, but this isn’t your studio anymore. you have to leave.”
the girl begins to walk away but luke tries to stop her. “but wait. we… we didn’t get your name.”
“it’s julie.” she turns back around and storms off.
they’re silent for a few seconds before reggie speaks up. “julie seems nice.”
alex sighs in defeat. “did you miss the part where she kicked us out, or…” reggie finally realised. “yes. okay.”
reggie had always been a little mentally slow, but y/n always told him that he was okay, that he just tried his best to see the bright side instead.
luke grabbed onto y/n’s hand and pulled her to the side. “hey.” he awkwardly said.
“hi.” she smiled back, unsure of what to say, it had been twenty five years since she had seen him.
“so, um, that’s how you died…” luke looked down, as y/n nodded. “wow, that’s, er, kind of a bummer.”
“yeah, i guess i must have felt really guilty about you guys dying, i guess i couldn’t take it anymore.” y/n exhaled loudly as she bit her lower lip. “but it doesn’t feel right.”
luke tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear which had fallen into y/n’s eyes. “care to explain, angel?”
how she had missed that nickname.
“it- it just feels completely wrong. i remember bits and pieces from before, but i feel like i’m missing a good couple of months of my memory, maybe even a year. all i remember is bobby. he was always there for me, and apparently he was the one who took me to the hospital.” y/n gasped. “he had to watch me die. first he had to watch you three, and then me. god, i feel so bad for him… i wonder where he is now.”
“can i ask you a question?” luke asked as y/n nodded. “who- who, um, found our bodies?”
y/n felt her heart speed up, “i did.”
luke’s eyes widened. “i’m so sorry, that must have been-”
“the worst thing i’ve ever experienced? yeah. yeah, it was.” y/n wish she was able to forget that more than anything. “and what made it even worse, was the way we ended it.”
“oh.” luke found himself slowly remembering why he went to go get street dogs in the first place. “you and bobby, yeah. did anything happen between you two?”
“no that i know of.” y/n felt herself leaning into luke’s chest. “i just wish i could remember, maybe that would give me some closure.”
“lets do it then.” luke wrapped his arms around her waist.
“lets do it?” y/n looked at him in confusion, putting her arms around his neck.
“lets try and get your memory back, there must be a reason why your forgot everything, right?” luke explained. “so there has to be a way to get it back.”
“that… surprisingly makes a lot of sense, patterson. consider me impressed.” y/n found herself nodding along to his suggestion.
“i was always impress you, lets be honest.” luke winked.
“yeah, you always do.” y/n caught luke’s eye, and it almost looked like he was looking at her lips for a split second.
“well, lets go get your memory back then, hotstuff.”
