Nick could absentmindedly hear Heather’s voice droning on behind the counter not too far off from the row of books he stood between. He was here often getting something new to read, something new to pass the time with when he wasn’t busy putting on a face. It was exhausting but he had an appearance to keep, one he was currently holding firm as he stood in the mall’s bookshop. He was examining a back cover when a hand reached in front of him, grabbing out a book. There was a soft apology and he glanced at the woman, eyes catching the red of her hair and the smile she wore so carefully.
He didn’t recognize her and maybe that’s what compelled him to speak to her, compelled him to open his mouth and say something, “Have we met before?” She smiled with a shake of her head and Nick pulled a smile to his lips, chuckling softly, “You’re right. I’d remember that smile.” He watched her cheeks tint a light shade and he softened his grin, “I’m Nick.”
