Doheny Longboard Surfing Association 10th Annual Dale Velzy Classic- August 21, 1999
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association created the Dale Velzy Classic in 1989 as a festival and context in tribute to legendary surfer and shaper Sale Velzy. The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an “organization dedicated to board surfing in a clean and natural environment”, and sponsors the Velzy and other events and contest in Southern California. Notable on this piece is the statue of King Kamehameha, perhaps paying tribute to the “sport of kings” and its roots in Hawaii.

Dale Velzy International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame- Inducted December 8 2001
Known as “The Hawk”, Dale Velzy was a surfer, a celebrity, a hell raising rebel, a revolutionary retailer, a hall of fame surfer, a surf film financier, a lifeguard and most of all, a shaper. A master shaper in his own right, Joe Quigg said, “You couldn’t even sell a board in the sixties unless it looked like a Velzy board.” Dale opened Velzy Surfboards (The world’s first surf shop) in Manhattan Beach, California in 1949, and shortly after has shops all along Southern California’s coast and in Hawaii (1951). Dale was so influential that a stretch of Hawaii’s famous North Shore, now know as Velzyland, was named in his honor. In his 50 plus years of building boards for the best surfers the sport has ever known, Dale designed dozen of surfboards, each revolutionizing surfing in it’s own way.

This is the first of only six editions of Competition Surf Magazine, which was launched in the spring of 1966. Founded by two Californians, Edwards W. Greezy III and Jim Joiner, the magazine was, as the name implied, focused on competitive surfing. Although Greevy and Joiner were from California, they published the magazine in New York, where they were then living. Even though surf magazine were primarily based on the West Coast, a small collection of East coast magazines such as Competition Surf, Atlantic Surfing, and Surfing East has found there way into the market in the mid to late 1970’s.
Clark Foam Surfboards
Clark Foam was one of the most iconic brands in modern surfing history and revolutionary player in the development of the surfboard and surfboard industry. Gordon, “Gubby”, Clark’s roots in the surf industry began working as a laminator in the shop of shaper Hobie Alter. In the mid 1950’s, Clark and Alter began experimenting with polyurethane foam at a secret location in Laguna Canyon in Southern California as a potential source for building surfboard blanks. Polyurethane was relatively inexpensive and easy to shape. They found that they could build a board with two lengthwise pieces separated by a wood stringer in the middle. In June or 1958, the duo put the first foam board board on the marketing. Within three years, Hobie has switched all of his boards from balsa wood to foam.
In 1961 Alter and Clark amicably split with Clark buying out Alter’s share in the business, and Clark Foam was officially formed. The foam revolution was in full swing and Clark had a head start on everyone. In 1964, Clark moved his operation to Laguna Niguel in order to be able to supply blanks to an expanding market if board-makers. Over the next 40 years, Clark Foam would create blanks ranging from 5’9” to 12’8” in over 70 shapes, 8 densities, 4 different wood stringer options, and over 5000 templates for the boards rocker. His molds were crafted by some of the finest shapers in the sports history, including Dale Velzy, Dick Brewer, and Pat Rawson. At the height of its power around 2002, Clark Foam owned an estimated 90% market share of the blanks sold in Florida, Hawaii, Frank and England.
And then December 5th, 2005 happened. Citing harassment from government regulatory agencies such as EPA, Clark sent out a 7 page fax announcing an abrupt ending to Clark Foam. Within in 6 months of Clark closing, there were nearly two dozen new companies trying to get a piece of the polyurethane board market, but none could even come close to replicating the quality and strength of Clark Foam. The Calk Foam Brand is now proudly owned by Malibu Shirts. Displayed in this store are original Calk Foam blanks in various sizes, shapes and densities. These are the raw blanks before shapers have refines them into their custom designs.

In the late nineteenth century, souvenirs from away places were generally small and light. Spoons were a trendy item to bring back to the mainland and were often lavishly designed.
Aloha Hawaii Etched Metal Medallion
Medallions were extremely popular within the surf culture in the 1960’s, often as good luck charms or simply as symbols of the sport they loved. Many featured Saint Christopher, who is the patron saint of travel and is believed to have searched the world for adventure (like surfers). Beach boys used to give their girlfriends medallions or surf charms as a sign of “going steady.” Another common symbol among surfers is the iron cross. Designed by neo-classical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it was established in 1813 as a military honor by Prussia’s King Friedrich Wilhelm III.
