ASTORIA

snow    was   one     of      astoria’s      favourite      weathers,    especially      one      of      the      seasonal      ones.      it’s      something      that      appeared      less      and      less      as        the      years      went      by.      the      coldness      and      having      to      wrap      up      in      hats      and      scarfs      (      along      with      the      need      to      ingest      hot      chocolate      most      days.      )      is      something      she      always      looked      forwards.      also      it      didn’t      help      that      she      loved      how      beautiful      things      looked      touched      by      snowflakes.    

that’s      why      she      had      decided      to      walk      to      draco’s      rather      than      just      apparating      inside,      beside      where’s      the      sense      of      surprise      in      that?      nerves      wrecked      through      her      body      even      though      she      knows      she      didn’t      have      any      reason      to      be      nervous.      it      is      only      draco      after      all      but      that      didn’t      stop      the      blush      from      creeping      onto      her      cheeks      when      the      door      opened      and      she      was      welcomed      with      the      view      of      the      ex-slytherin      prince.      and      she      could      never        help      but      smile      every      time      she      laid      eyes      on      him.      

 ❝     we        should        technically        wait        until        tomorrow        morning        but        i        want        you        to        open        it        now.     ❞     hands        push        it        into        his        ,        but        now        she        regrets        it        because        her        own        hands        are        now        idly.     ❝        you        got        me        a        present        too?        well        you        surprise        me        every       time        draco.    …    are        you        going        to        let        me        in?    ❞     she    teases.

CHRISTMAS   just   doesn’t   hold   the   whimsical   charm   of   his   childhood   anymore   .   the   malfoys   were   never   a   family   to   sing   carols   or   bake   cookies   (   things   draco   wouldn’t    want   to   do   anyway   )   but   even   to    a   sheltered   child   the   season   brought   unparalelled   joy   .   on   his   own   ,   now   ,   he’s   barely   stopped   to   consider   the   looming   holiday   amongst   other   more   pressing   matters   .   it’s   astoria   that     somehow   always   manages   to   slow   things   down   and   re   -   focus   his   perspective   .

“   screw   waiting  until   tomorrow   ,   ”   he   scoffs   ,   tucking   the   carefully   wrapped   package   under   one   arm   as   he   reaches   for   the   door   .   as   much   as   he’s   secretly   enjoying   her   closeness   on   the   small   step   ,   the   chill   of   a   frigid    winter   is   much   less   inviting   .

LUNA

         ❝ 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠? ❞ her eyes peer at him, a silvery blue broken only by the few manic tendrils that fall across her face at varying lengths. ❝ you look unrested… maybe some bluebell tea? no sugar, otherwise you’ll have terrible dreams. but you should only let it steep for three minutes at most, or else the faeries will smell it. they like bluebells and will be tempted by the color of your hair. it’s like moonlight, you know. ❞

NARCISSA

hollow  ache  constricts  the  emptiness  felt  within  her  chest  ,  his  words  hit  hard  but  it’s  not  like  it’s  not  to  be  expected  …  no  matter  how  much  she  tried  to  hide  him  from  the  horrors  and  evil  of  the  world  ,  it  was  to  no  avail  .  there’s  a  glimmer  of  exasperation  within  gaze  ,  it’s  the  last  thing  a  mother  wants  to  hear  .  ❛  draco  ,  please  .  don’t  say  that  .  we  all  have  our  demons  to  face  ,  but  I  tried  …  I  tried  to  keep  you  safe  from  all  this  .  ❜

HERMIONE

“  ⠀draco  ⠀! ⠀ ” ⠀ witch ⠀ steps  ⠀between ⠀ the  ⠀slytherin ⠀ prefect  ⠀and  ⠀the  ⠀cowering ⠀ first ⠀ year ⠀, ⠀ pausing ⠀ any ⠀ sort ⠀ of ⠀ terror ⠀ the ⠀ male ⠀ intended ⠀ to ⠀ wreak ⠀ on ⠀ the ⠀ poor ⠀ eleven ⠀ year ⠀ old ⠀. ⠀ “ ⠀ as ⠀ prefects ⠀, ⠀ our ⠀ duty ⠀ is ⠀ to ⠀ assist ⠀ the ⠀ first ⠀ years ⠀, ⠀ not ⠀ harass ⠀ them  ⠀! ⠀ ” ⠀ stern ⠀ look  ⠀reminiscent  ⠀of ⠀ professor ⠀ mcgonagall ⠀ is ⠀ plastered  ⠀on  ⠀features ⠀, ⠀ tone ⠀ sharp  ⠀and ⠀ authoritative ⠀. 

HERMIONE

           fire  creaks,   the  only  sound  that  echoes  in  the  room,   legs  pushed  against  her  chest,   brown  eyes  are  lost  in  the  distance,   reflect  of  dancing  flames  echoing  in  her  gaze.   thoughts  keep  pushing  themselves,   striking  brain  like  angry  bees,   every  word  she  thinks  of  hurts  though  she  knows  the  truth  of  it.   three  a.m.  rings,  clock’s  bell  echoing  against  the  wall  of  the  sleeping  house.   but  sadness  is  𝒶  𝓉𝑒𝓇𝓇𝒾𝒷𝓁𝑒  𝓂𝑜𝓃𝓈𝓉𝑒𝓇,   a  cold  one  that  has  found  a  bed  upon  her  heart,   like  a  weight  that  makes  breathing  difficult,   air  stuck  in  windpipe  for  a  second.   muscles  stiffen  under  flesh,   back  straightening  against  the  cushion  as  deep  breath  is  taken,   trying  to  calm  her  features,   trying  to  erase  what  remains  of  the  angry  shouts  she  exchanged  hours  ago  with  harry      &&      ron.   annoyance  is  a  mask  she  places  upon  her  face,   hoping  to  dismiss  the  intruder,   hoping  to  find  peace  again,   peace  to  dissect  their  every  word,   to  find  her  faults,   to  find  theirs      /      for  the  blame  is  always  to  be  laid  at  someone’s  feet,   better  deserve  it.   but  it’s  the  reason  for  their  fight  that’s  standing  there,   mouth  pursing  in  annoyance,   small  part  of  her  hating  her  propension  to  defend  what  is  right,   to  always  defend  what  is  right      (   and  malfoy  has  a  right  to  fight  with  them,   she  doesn’t  ask  for  anyone  to  trust  him,   she  only  asks  for  them  to  trust  her   ).      eyelids  flutter  close  for  a  second  as  the  words  she  thinks  land,   the  blow  stealing  her  breath  away  for  the  time  of  a  blink.         ❝  you’re  staying,  malfoy.  like  i  said  you  would,  ❞         barely  civil,   her  tone  can’t  conceal  how  much  it  takes  from  her  to  defend  him,   how  much  it  costs  her  to  do  what  she  believes  to  be  right. 

HOW   LONG   SLEEP   HAS   ELUDED   HIM   ,   he   cannot   be   sure   ,   as   each   endless   night   weaves   itself   into   another   treacherous   day   .   time   and   space   exists   in   this   alternate   world   only   to   tease   and   torture   —   sometimes   a   whisper   of   hope   that   the   end   is   near   ,   though   rather   usually    a    monotony   that   slowly   leads   one   towards   insanity   .   it’s   during   the   mind   -   numbing   black   of   night   when   he   wonders   what   is   real   and   what   is   made   up   —   the   surreality   of   a   former   life   ,   of   luxury   and    prosperity    ,   compared   to   this   hell   that   must   surely   be   a   nightmare   .   there   is   no   other   explanation   for   why   he   is   here   .

yet   it’s   the   intrusive   chill   permeating   even   bone   that   terrifies   him   the   most   ,   the   most   convicing   piece   of   evidence   that   he   is   ebbing   away   to   nothingness   .   the   uncontrollable   shiver   drives   him   from   his   bed   many   a   night   ,   to   hold   his   hands   before   the   whisper   of   a   dying   fire   ,   ALONE   ,   hoping   to   feel   something   .   to   blaze   ,   to  burn   ,   anything   but   the   cold   that   numbs   him   to   his   very   core   .

A   SHAKY   INTAKE   OF   BREATH   ,   nimble   fingers   twisting   together   in   a   display   of   carefully   -   controlled   nerves   .   the   anxiety   of   facing   her   is   nearly   laughable   ,   would   be   considered   shameful   within   the   crowd   he   was   raised   ,   yet   the   feeling   comes   suddenly   and   inexplicably   .   he  should   have   never   entertained   her   curiosity   following   their   harrowing   first    encounter   .

THEO

❛    that’s    𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭    to    know    draco    …    ❜      head  tilts  as  he  leans  into  a  condescending  smile  with  ease  .    ❛    but  frankly  ;    i  don’t  have  years  to  wait  .    ❜      unfair  as  it  may  be  to  take  the  frustration  of  failure  out  on  a  friend  it  is  a  move  to  be  anticipated  ,  if  still  unwelcomed  .    fuses  run  short  this  time  of  year  so  it  is  unfortunate  they  are  most  familiar  with  the  cold  ,  misplaced  sort  of  anger  .

a  deep  inhale  and  still  only  a  fraction  of  realisation  sets  in  that  he  is  being  unreasonable  .    apologies  are  very  costly  .    ❛    more  immediate  solutions  would  be  appreciated  ,    but  if  all  you  can  do  is  waste  my  time  - - -    i  still  have  a  lot  of  studying  to  do  !    ❜ 

HE   LEANS   BACK   in   the   plaid   armchair   ,   fingers   drumming   a   steady   rythym   against   the   upholstrey   while   pale   eyes   lend   a   critical   gaze   to   the   fellow   slytherin   .  owl   tests   have   brought   out   the   worst   in   everyone   ,  but    theo’s   caustic   replies   simply   glide   off   of     draco   .   he’s   heard   worse  .

ASTORIA

it’s    all     wrapped     up     neatly    with    a    bow    on     top.     she    has    even    wrapped    the     small     box     up     with     green     paper,    the     ribbon    that    dangles     a    striking    red     colour     that’s     sure     to     catch     his     eyes.     a     blush     creeps    up     on    her    cheeks    as     light     hues     flutter     up    to     look    at     him,     a     small     snowflake     falling    onto    her    eyelashes.     she    doesn’t     know     why     she’s    so     nervous     ,     perhaps     it’s     because     it’s     the    first     time     she’s     given     him     a     gift     ,    or    perhaps     because      it’s      him      she’s     giving     it    to.     ❝      here     ,     i     know    we     said     no     gifts     but    i     couldn’t     help     myself.      ❞  

THE   DAYS   HAVE   BEEN   BLURRING   TOGETHER   ,   one   oppresive   blanket  of   gray   woven   into   the   next   ,   with   snow   and   bitter   cold   chasing   every   last   person   who   dares   to   venture   out   back   into   their   homes   .   draco   himself   has   spent   most   of   the   last   week   cooped   up   in   the   small   flat   he   recently   rented   to   escape   malfoy   manor   ,   and   the   lack   of   square   footage   was   beginning   to   drive   him   mad   .   so   when   astoria   called   ,   he   decided   to   brave   winter’s   wrath   .

she   hadn’t   even   made   it   inside   ,   pushing   the   small   red   and   green   box   into   his   hands   as   soon   as   they   were   both   stood   on   the    tiny   step   outside   .   so   close   he   can   see   the   tiniest   snowflake   land   in   the   thick   of   dark   lashes   she   looks   up   at   him   through   .   despite   the   blustery   environment   ,   her   mere   presence   radiates   WARMTH   and   color   that   envelope   him   tightly   .   it’s   enough   to   make   breathing   suddenly   more   difficult   than   usual   .   .   .
